Hello all,

It's been a year since we last had a webchat about all things Mumsnet and moderation so we thought we'd do it again!

We'll be here between 11.30 and 12.30 on Friday - JustineMumsnet and as many members of the team as we can muster - so join us then or post up any advance Qs here.

Mind the guidelines at the top of the page now - only one question each and be nice Wink

Sounds like fun (again) it's a date :)

LineRunner · 19/11/2014 14:53

I would like to ask about the Russell Brand web chat. You suspended new registrations about an hour before it started, because so many people were seemingly registering just to go on it and be strange frighteningly obsequious.

Will you do this again for other webchats, possibly at an even earlier juncture?

Many thanks.

ralgex · 19/11/2014 16:17

What can a poster do if the first response on a thread they start is aggressive and antagonistic, leading other posters to follow suit? Would you delete the thread, if asked, so that the OP can start a new one which won't be derailed in the same way?

BathshebaDarkstone · 19/11/2014 16:39

Will try to be there, I have a frigging blood test that morning. Sad

ginnycreeper5 · 19/11/2014 16:40

Are some long-term members beyond reproach?
I notice that the same culprits often try to derail a thread and cause trouble, just as it starts to get interesting.
And it's always the same names that crop up.
But, Why are they never banned? (especially since they keep doing it)

Why don't you toughen up on that sort of thing?

Can we have a "think this person is a troll" check box on the report form?

CurlyWurlyCake · 19/11/2014 18:44

yonic asked the question I wanted to ask.

You waited, deliberately, till I was on holiday, didn't you?!

So. I shall rub it in. Whilst you're having this lovely chat, I will be ON MY WAY TO BARBADOS

Recently a poster turned up in FWR saying that he'd been falsely accused of rape. The scenario he described was remarkably similar to one that had been in the press that week. He seemed to think feminists would understand why his accuser was lying. Hmm Despite reports it stood all night and apparently got really nasty.

My question: if someone turns up claiming to have been falsely accused of rape again, can MNHQ please immediately delete the thread?

I, too, would welcome a troll button the report system.

YonicScrewdriver · 19/11/2014 21:30

Double post AND caps, BIWI?

BIWI · 19/11/2014 21:37

Oh. Whoops Blush

YonicScrewdriver · 19/11/2014 21:40

I just thought you REALLY wanted to rub it in Grin

BIWI · 19/11/2014 21:40

Well, there is that ... Grin

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 19/11/2014 22:41

I'm marking my place until I can think of something to ask.

Deedeecupcake · 20/11/2014 02:13

Not really a mod question and has probably been asked before so please do ignore if needs be, but is there any chance in the future for pictures on the app?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 20/11/2014 04:12

I had my first question deleted as I didn't formulate it properly but I really do want to ask something.

A couple of years ago there was a spate of threads which were very upsetting to parents of children with SN. .the dreaded "panto thread" being one. Many people were upset at MNHQs stance that it was all a good debate and that certain posters were helping to educate on the subject.

The "This is my child' campaign was born and MNHQ had a huge confab and said that they were sorry posters felt they had to educate others at their own expense and that this wasn't in fact right and they would take a firmer stance on disablism and be a stronger presence on such threads. I wish I still had the email and posts from then.

Fast forward to now and there is a rash of posts which are quite upsetting to those affected by disability, ranging from parking space abuse to wheelchair space abuse to lengthy arguments about disabled toilets.

MNHQ are notably absent from the threads and people are being left to educate..and actually not succeeding in educating because the threads run and run with people insisting on such lovely courses of action as carers removing people from wheelchairs and propping them up on bus seats so someone doesnt have to wake their baby and fold..and taking lots of abuse for trying.

When reported we are again being told that threads must stand so we can educate. Why has MNHQS stance reverted to this? It is making MN a hostile place for parents of children with SN and people with disabilities and allowing all sorts of horrible threads to spring up again.

Please please can you reconsider this? I am sure some of you must remember the time of the panto thread .

LeftyLoony · 20/11/2014 10:51

I'm seconding Fanjo. It's why I don't post any more. I do read, though, which makes me realise that 'general' MN boards (as opposed to the SN ones) are openly hostile to disability.

Broke my self imposed posting ban as Fanjo's post needs seconding.

Samcro · 20/11/2014 11:22

I have just NC just so I can't post on those threads.
I am shocked that after all these years (been here since 2006) that threads that are so goady in their content are allowed to stand.
it should not be down to people from the disabled community to keep on educating.

Solo · 20/11/2014 12:53

Hello!!
Last year, I suggested a nn amnesty type thing to free up unused and unwanted nn's, or even a check box and delete button to get rid of the ones we don't want. You (Justine I think) said it was a good idea, but it hasn't happened yet.

I have loads I'd like to get rid of!! Grin

ballsballsballs · 20/11/2014 13:29

I agree with others here about disability and SN threads. They are often hideous.

HerrenaHarridan · 21/11/2014 02:27

Hi hq Smile

The old issue of horrible threads standing for far too long still haunts us and obviously you have been gradually working out solutions, night mods etc.
what I would really like to see trialled is a system whereby if x number if reports about a thread were received the thread would automatically lock down and disappear from active until reviewed by a human.

I appreciate your openness in discussing these things and would also put another aye behind fanjos comment in disabilist threads

ChippingInAutumnLover · 21/11/2014 10:14

I'm surprised this thread is still here this morning.

SPAM

I got a PM off of him as well.

Are MN ok with the thread? If not, why is it still there at this time of the day? It's not as if it takes much to read through it?
