Hello all,

It's been a year since we last had a webchat about all things Mumsnet and moderation so we thought we'd do it again!

We'll be here between 11.30 and 12.30 on Friday - JustineMumsnet and as many members of the team as we can muster - so join us then or post up any advance Qs here.

Mind the guidelines at the top of the page now - only one question each and be nice Wink

The question about making some of the chat threads permanent and deleting AIBUs after 3 months has been asked again and again. Nothing changes. This is why I cba to join in with today's web chat.

You just did Grin

Wasn't aware chat thread question had been asked before and as said, we see no good reason not to make that change, so we'll get on it.

I can't see the purpose of removing AIBU threads after three months - what is the thinking there? Wouldn't it just annoy those looking things up for reference...

usualsuspect333 · 22/11/2014 14:04

AIBU is not used for support though. Well it shouldn't be.

I don't see the point of keeping the bunfightsAIBU threads for longer than 30 days.

There is hardly any useful information for people to search for in AIBU.

usualsuspect333 · 22/11/2014 14:06

At least some chat threads are funny. AIBU is rarely funny.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 22/11/2014 14:22

AIBU is as supportive as 100 year old knickers.

JustineMumsnet · 22/11/2014 15:01

I think Aibu can be pretty funny - one of my fave ever threads was supersoakers one in aibu.

Mintyy · 22/11/2014 15:05

If aibu is used properly then there won't be any facts or anything concrete to research in there. Aibu is or should be all about asking opinions, hopefully on the more trivial conundrums we face in our lives.

It when people use Aibu to ask for advice eg: "aibu to ask how to cure my smelly washing machine" that you get this blurring of the lines over whether the topic is useful or not.

I think there can be lots of useful advice worth keeping when asking people for their opinions, though, no?

here is an example

Like SoleSource I have found mn to be a lifeline through the never ending loneliness of being a lone parent to a child with additional needs.
I rarely post in the special needs board, very occasionally reference dds sn. I mostly prefer to chat shit or support others.

Threads like this www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2230696-To-be-annoyed-with-the-school-again
Reduce me to tears. I haven't reported it as the horrible stuff was a few days ago and it appears to have turned a corner. Plus i would find it hard to believe you didn't get lots of reports already.
The way that some people speak to the op for wanting what is available to non sn kids, is horrific.

I respect your position in not deleting whole threads but I feel mn could/should have thrown their weight in.

Again I do recognise you don't want to appear to show favouritism but I do think a carefully worded message reminding people that discrimination against people with disabilities is illegal

Hear hear

ChippingInAutumnLover · 22/11/2014 18:09

I agree that there isn't any reason to make AIBU only 30/90 days or whatever. There is a specific 30 day topic, if people want their thread to disappear they can post there.
