Following the leaking of an Amnesty International policy document 'Decriminalisation of Sex Work: Policy Background', which argues that men who buy sex are ‘exercising their autonomy’ and should be allowed to do so ‘free from government interference’ there has been considerable discussion on the site and requests for a webchat.

Today, Kate Allen, Director of Amnesty International UK will be here between 11-12pm to answer your questions.

Please do join us live on Tuesday or ask your question on this thread in advance. Just a quick reminder that it’s one question per person; take a look at our webchat guidelines, here.

"Pimp funding"? er what?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 06/02/2014 19:35

Hark at rhino, policing the boards now?

I don't care about abolitionist funding - I care about pimps "sex work advocate groups" profiting from the sale of women's bodies, and then seeking to increase that profit via campaigning for decriminalisation.

BellaRobinson is on twitter, and tweeted this AI webchat - clearly having no idea what Mumsnet is, or that we are UK-based. She's accused MN of being an "anti-platform" when it is nothing of the kind. It is a parenting forum where individuals post their views.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 06/02/2014 19:38

Laura Lee apparently has never come across a trafficked or coerced woman in 20+ years of experience. IMO that says a lot.

Rhino, get a hold of yourself - Laura Lee admitted in the NI hearing that there are "hundreds, if not thousands" of trafficked and coerced women in the UK and NI alone.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 19:38

My link above also hints at the fact many Nordic model supporter organisations are very vocal about the issue before they get funding, then as soon as they get their funding they go all quiet.

hmmm

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 19:40

"Laura Lee admitted in the NI hearing that there are "hundreds, if not thousands" of trafficked and coerced women in the UK and NI alone."

No she didn't. She agreed there are hundreds or thousands of women working in prostitution. Some of whom are trafficked.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 06/02/2014 19:43

So she admitted they existed then rhino?

Come on - stop minimising the suffering and existence of trafficked/coerced women and talking about funding of other organisations - it's pimps and the profiteers that have the financial vested interest in an expanding prostitution market.

FloraFox · 06/02/2014 19:45

Are you trying to give out legal advice rhino? How amusing.

Are we supposed to be outraged at the figures you've posted? I can't locate an iota of outrage unless it's that Dublin Rape Crisis Centre only gets $177,965 of funding.

You do know these organisations don't spend all this money on campaigning, right?

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 19:47

Dublin Rape Crisis Centre only gets $177,965 of funding.

This is the funding they get from Atlantic Philanthropies for saying they support the Nordic model.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 19:49

@Sab

Like I already said I don't think anyone is denying trafficking victims exist. But I don't think there are as many as we are led to believe and I don't think trying to criminalize consenting adults will help.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 19:50

How much funding do sex worker groups such as Scot-Pep and IUSW receive for saying they want decriminalization? ZERO.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 06/02/2014 19:51

Ha ha ha ha ha ha - that's the sound of me laughing at the total bullshit you're spouting Rhino. Do you have any idea how strapped for cash the average rape crisis centre is? (Not that you'd care... After all, you're in the business of defending punter's rights to coerce destitute women into having sex with men who, overwhelmingly, they wouldn't have sex with if they could find any other way of supporting themselves - and I tell you, if I was ever put in that situation by circumstances, I'd feel like I was being raped every single bloody time.)

FloraFox · 06/02/2014 19:52

You mean the grant they got in 2001 to study sexual violence in Ireland?

www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/grantee/dublin-rape-crisis-centre

Outrage not located.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 19:53

My point is if that specific centre wasn't a vocal Nordic model supporter, they wouldn't have received that amount from AP.

SauceForTheGander · 06/02/2014 19:55

Chezzer - well in that case I despair and give up on AI

FloraFox · 06/02/2014 19:56

IUSW has ten members. What do they need funding for? A Starbucks run?

Why should I care about how Scot Pep is funded?

FloraFox · 06/02/2014 19:57

rhino how do you know that and what is the significance? They got money 13 years ago to carry out a study. So fucking what??

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 06/02/2014 19:57

They help women who have been raped.

What is your fucking problem?

I would assume their leaders believe in the model and met donors who do too, rather than selling their political position.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 06/02/2014 19:59

Your figures are bull, rhino. They are a load of rhino-shit.

"I don't think trying to criminalize consenting adults will help."

I don't agree. Criminalising the purchase of sex tackles demand for commercialised sex - and it does so successfully - otherwise pimps wouldn't be trying to stop it.

Reduce the demand, you reduce the trafficking.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 20:00

Can any of you type a post without using the word "fucking"?

I'm a supporter of decriminalization, but for that amount of money I might be tempted to start supporting the Nordic model. Or at least pretend to anyway. Just saying.

FloraFox · 06/02/2014 20:01

rhino that just shows your lack of fucking character. I would expect nothing else.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 20:02

Criminalising the purchase of sex tackles demand for commercialised sex - and it does so successfully

And your evidence is what? The best Sweden have to say is that street prostitution now is much lower than pre-1999 when the law was implemented (which could also be due to the fact people now have the internet and a lot of prostitution takes place via online bookings as opposed to the street).

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 06/02/2014 20:04

Street prostitution has halved in Sweden since the new law. The source for that figure is the Swedish government.

But if you'll only read the pimp-funded studies, you won't realise that.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 06/02/2014 20:05

Who's funding you, Rhinoceer?
What is your financial interest in the sex industry?

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 06/02/2014 20:07

Don't bother linking to any shit-studies-funded-by-pimp-networks either rhino - look up the Swedish government's report for the real figures.

rhinoceer · 06/02/2014 20:07

"Street prostitution has halved in Sweden since the new law."

And indoor prostitution? Oh yeah, it's illegal and out of sight so that means noone knows.
