Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

Had I had a male Guinea pig and my mum got a female and never thought about babies! The day after we had babies my mum spoke to the vet and he said it was too late and to expect more - and we did! Hope you have girls and then they can all live together !

How exciting and adorable, if rather inconvenient.

This happened to one of the guinea pigs I got when I was a teenagers.

If you lift her up and place your ear on her side you can hear the babies squeaking inside.
The babies were adorable, mine had 2

There’s no way you can hear babies squeaking pre-natally.

squeaking requires air to be passed over the vocal cords. There is no air in utero so they cannot make sounds. It’s impossible.

it will have been mum’s squeaks you heard.

Just here for the baby pig photos 💕

Me too ❤️

VerityUnreasonble · 10/02/2024 22:09

Hmm it feels like more piggys might not be that much of a disaster Grin

Windydaysandwetnights · 10/02/2024 22:10

We had 2 years ago. Dcat drove himself nuts by the sounds.. Sadly 1 died and I swapped the remaining one with a vet nurse who kindly gave me 4 orphan dkittens and my fostering days begun.. That sadly lost GP effectively saved dozens of dkittens..

Here for photos!

Oh stop! Don't tempt me to start my own little herd 😂

GPs are surprisingly hard work, I don't think some people realise how much work goes into them when they first get them. Between cleaning, bathing, clipping and grooming, hay, kibble and veggies, toys, floor play and outdoor play... they're a handful!

I definitely won't be keeping any of the babies but I'll make sure Mum and babies are as happy, healthy and stress free as I can while they're with me. (Contrary to the RL advice I've been given of just returning Mom to the pet store and letting them deal with her 🙄)

Haha, you're actually the 2nd person that has said that to me today 😂 I do genuinely love and adore GPs, and talk about them more than any adult woman should 🙈 but I definitely can't maintain a herd!

Ahhh, I'm so glad to see people placemarking for the photos, makes me feel less overwhelmed and stressed about this imminent birth to be honest.

Thanks for all the advice as well everyone, it's much appreciated. Keep your fingers crossed for us that all goes well ❤️

Guinea pigs are such sweet little creatures, baby ones just look like mini adults straightaway.

DrWu · 10/02/2024 22:37

Also place marking for the little piggie pics!

Me too! I might be more of a dog person, but I do love the small furry things, too. We had a rabbit, a guinea pig, a hamster and several gerbils between me and my sisters when I was young.
Hope all goes well, OP.

This is making me miss mine. I had two sets of a boy and girl each. No babies as were neutered. I hope all goes well with the birth. Do you know how many babies are expected?

JCLV · 10/02/2024 22:46

We had many guinea pigs over the years. Bought one and didn’t know she was pregnant. She had 6 babies and only one didn’t survive. They pretty much cope by themselves but we were always advised to give them vitamin C drops in their water.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2024 22:50

Oh they are so lovely, i miss having guinea pigs.

It's hilarious when they get into late pregnancy as they look just like a lightbulb.

We had one pregnant from the shop and we did at one point have a male and female we allowed to mate, then the male (and the boy baby) got neutered. They don't usually have large litters, I don't think. We kept all the babies.
