What is your post-apocalyptic occupation?

AIBU to ask you what your post-apocalyptic occupation would be?

With all the recent news about the shortage of skilled workers - HGV drivers, farm labourers, and today there are news about an emergency visa scheme considered for abattoir workers, I started wondering what would I do if the modern society suddenly fell back into - well, not Dark Ages exactly - but, say, mid-late 19th century ways of living.

And realised that I actually have very little in terms of real-life tradeable skills. In a world without computers, my other skills are worth zero to the community, and I would probably immediately fall to the bottom of the newly established social order. Grin

What about you?

I like to imagine I would be like Carole from The Walking Dead

SinoohXaenaHide · 14/10/2021 23:15

I shall be the village matriarch/elder/wisewoman/witch and shall command fear and respect from all. Because frankly there won't be a lot of call for database analytics if there isn't electricity any more.

FindingMeno · 14/10/2021 23:15

I would grow vegetables, forage, and keep the fire going.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 14/10/2021 23:18

I’m a school office lady. I figure I would be a school office lady with. Lot of admin.

I do our YouTube videos and facilitate google classroom and I’d be like I was in lockdown.

But with classes and videos teaching 5 year olds how to killl zombies

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/10/2021 23:20

I'm a crack shot. So that.

XenoBitch · 14/10/2021 23:20

I can sew. So I guess making/repairing clothing etc

DoraTheScottishExplorer · 14/10/2021 23:21

I can grow vegetables so maybe that on a larger scale.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/10/2021 23:21

Headscarf maker.
For some reason, my brain associated lockdowns, post apocalypse etc with us all reverting to wearing headscarves. I'm reasonable with a needle, so my business is sorted.

Maverickess · 14/10/2021 23:22

I'll be looking after those that come back injured or those that are sick and dying in a cave somewhere, using what I can forage to do so and taking my turn at the entrance with a weapon to keep the riff raff out.

Pretty much an amalgamation of my current job in care and my last one in hospitality 😂

Mymapuddlington · 14/10/2021 23:22

If @XenoBitch is taking the sewing job I’ll be the cook and help out with sewing if needed.
Also like my chances with a gun if zombies appear.

tabulahrasa · 14/10/2021 23:23

What sort of apocalypse? I’d be rubbish after a zombie one or something...

But just a bog standard all technology is gone type, farm animals, I could do farm animals.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 14/10/2021 23:23

We have family who farm and I can grow vegetables pretty well so I don't think we'd starve. I can cook and bake well with fire, i can preserve and pickle but I'd struggle with meat. I'm definitely no butcher. I can also sew but have no building or construction skills. My own personal transferrable skills are about building a community, helping people resolve differences and managing conflict. I'd be a great community mediator.

Sportsnight · 14/10/2021 23:24

I can make one type of cheese. Hope you all like mozzarella.

TorchFire · 14/10/2021 23:24

I can milk cows and kill poultry?

YodaiamsaidI · 14/10/2021 23:24

Sniper.

Twinsmum2003 · 14/10/2021 23:24

Aunt Lydia

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/10/2021 23:25

I run the crèche, forage for food and cook. But only vegetarian, so potentially slim pickings. If I had to learn how to cook meat the remaining people would probably die of food poisoning.

Blue4YOU · 14/10/2021 23:25

I’m up for beating some zombie to death, digging holes, growing things, caring for the sick. That’s all I’ve got

AnneLovesGilbert · 14/10/2021 23:25

@MrsTerryPratchett

I'm a crack shot. So that.
See now that’s actually useful.
AnneLovesGilbert · 14/10/2021 23:25

@Sportsnight

I can make one type of cheese. Hope you all like mozzarella.
You’re in!
AnneLovesGilbert · 14/10/2021 23:26

@Twinsmum2003

Aunt Lydia
JaceLancs · 14/10/2021 23:26

I’m a great cook so I’m going to be the village baker or something similar
I can also sew, knit, crochet and weave so could produce clothes and household linens

TheSpiral · 14/10/2021 23:27

I have considered this at length. As a journalist, my idea is that I become the lynch pin of the community, travelling around and getting information and sharing it with the community in some form of newsletter. In reality I’m not sure my information would be worth much. A few turnips maybe?

Mymapuddlington · 14/10/2021 23:27

I vote @Twinsmum2003 aka aunt Lydia has to make her own community

Bounce55 · 14/10/2021 23:27

I'd be caring for the sick/injured and looking after the animals
