To feel "posh"

leopardprintpants · 22/07/2021 19:48

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

Sorry I’ve just looked up Bodensee towelling shorts and I’m perplexed as to why you reckon they’re posh 🤔 The fabric isn’t expensive and they’re sort of gapey….I think they’re naff and chavvy for day time wear. I can see if you wore these things as transition wear post beach, that would be posh…but as actual attire, not posh. Chino shorts are posh. Salmon coloured twill shorts are posh. A thing that ideally requires ironing is posh. Towelling shorts are not posh.
Get a life.

My little girls aren't going to wear chino shorts home from the beach, although they do own some.

@Teaandjam- I posted up thread. We ended up with one when we moved house. I felt very posh and slightly intimidated! Love it now (17 years on) but cringe sometimes if I have to admit I have an Aga, depends who I’m talking to!

Echobelly · 22/07/2021 22:51

Felt posh when I spent a significant part of my life savings at the time to get tickets to the whole Wagner Ring opera cycle at the Royal Opera House so I could see it with my parents (no way was I asked them to spend the money on me). Was totally worth it.

Nervousdrivingtest · 22/07/2021 22:51

Glad I'm not the only fan of Pop coats!

Last Christmas I was given almost £80 worth of free school meal vouchers for the holidays thanks to Marcus Rashford's campaign. I'd already bought most of my Christmas shopping so I went to Marks and Spencer and bought Christmas puddings, pigs in blankets, Percy Pigs, chocolate biscuits, mixed nuts in their shell and lots of other nibbles. The money didn't go far in M&S(!) but we had an amazing Christmas and it felt very posh with all the expensive treats. I really hope I meet Marcus Rashford one day so I can thank him personally for the incredible work he has done.

Also, I'm not posh and either is my 5 year old.

She wants to wear fun, childish clothes not salmon coloured twill shorts for fuck sake 😂😂😂

Not posh but I felt grown up at last- I must have been about 38 or so - waiting to pay in M&S for a trolley with a week's shopping for family and realising I didn't have to worry about paying for it, there was more than enough in my bank. Finally.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 22/07/2021 22:54

I'm not British by birth so I'll never qualify for posh.

Which is why I was very surprised when people used to accuse me of being posh on account of drinking my Earl Grey tea with honey & lemon.
Quite a few times, I should add!

I had to explain every time that I'm Hungarian and we only drink tea when ill. And we have it with honey & lemon, never with milk & sugar.
Who could have guessed that growing up in a communist country would cultivate habits that are viewed as posh?🤣
it's still so funny to me

That's fab, hope you were wearing something that required ironing post transition from markses 😂

I’m not plugging any posh clothes …i wouldn’t wear chino shorts. Just saying I don’t see why towelling ones are posh…..
Boden is kind of middle class.

They're not posh, that's basically the whole point of the ENTIRE thread.

I'm not middle class, which is why buying them felt "nice" because they are an unnecessary purchase, will get worn for the walk home from the beach etc.

When our business was starting to take off I went and bought the kids some Ralph Lauren Polo shirts ...not fake ones either Grin. Felt a bit posh then

wanttomarryamillionaire · 22/07/2021 22:59

@FuckingHateRats

I regularly take my these kids into a bookshop, buy us all a new book and then decamp in the nearest coffee shop for hot drinks and cake, and to read our new books.

My mum thinks this is the epitome of extravagance 🤣🤣

This really made me smile. It brought back happy memories of doing this with my Dc when they were young.
CorianderBee · 22/07/2021 23:01

@Miliao

How is reading a book and eating cake posh?!! I’m not even sure it’s extravagant!
It didn't just say posh. It also said things your parents would consider extravagant. Stop trying to put people down and infer that they are so low class they can't possibly know posh things. They mean posh TO THEM.

Such classism on Mumsnet my Lord.

Xmasbaby11 · 22/07/2021 23:02

ooh I do a few things I think of as posh, though they almost certainly aren't! But anyway, these are the things I feel are a luxury and make me happy.

Foodwise
always have parma ham in the fridge, and smoked salmon
Bonne maman jam, always
croissants on a Sunday
Buy panini bread and make panini on the griddle

Boden / Joules coats for the kids and some other nice bits from their ranges - I try to buy things they wear a lot
Champney reed diffusers around the house
Posh hand gel in my bag (I say posh, it is by Bramble or something, cost about £4 and smells divine)

Coffee shop every Sat morning with my 7yo dd. We take a sketch pad and pencil crayons and do drawing together while having hot drinks and cake. Definitely not posh but feels extravagant doing it every weekend! At home there always seems to be other things to do but here we just enjoy drawing and chatting together.

I do buy my kids books often - we go to Waterstones and choose together. I don't think of it as posh but definitely a treat.

peaceanddove · 22/07/2021 23:02

Our DDs have always been hopelessly pampered. Their bedrooms were straight out of the Laura Ashley catalogue. At bath time they always had a few drops of organic lavender oil in the water to relax them. Full length John Lewis night dresses + matching dressing gowns + proper slippers in the Winter. John Lewis school uniform + wool duffle coats + leather school shoes from European brands like Elefant. Rest of their clothes were all from Monsoon Girl.

Now they're teens they live in battered Vans, their boyfriends' huge slobby sweatshirts and leggings [weeps]

However, since they started wearing make up I have always bought them Chanel foundation because I can't bear that chalky orange cast you see on so many teens. They also only use Aveda shampoo & conditioner. They both sleep on Mulberry silk pillowcases to keep their hair shiny. DD1 had a skin issue a while back so she saw a private dermatologist straight away and is now fine.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 22/07/2021 23:04

@SummerBreeze1980

I used to buy my DD a beautiful traditional party dress every year from JoJo Maman when she was little. That felt pretty posh...most of the time it was Asda and Primark!
Me too! Switched to JL when she got too old for Jojo 😭 (but I got the dresses in sales and sometimes from eBay…)

I took DD to the Royal Ballet for her Christmas treat when she was six. My mum used to take me to the ballet all the time, starting when I was five and was taken to see Coppelia; but we lived in a big northern city with several theatres and lots of touring companies visiting, so it was easy to go.

I now live in a city which doesn’t have that; the closest place to see a ballet is London. Two years ago the ROH had Coppelia; so as a one-off treat, I took DD for her first ballet.

We both felt v v posh indeed!

Doodlebug71 · 22/07/2021 23:05

@FuckingHateRats Not about to plough through 35 pages, so: Waterstones and other good bookshops have sales sections in the upper floors. Ask the staff. Then when you've browsed that, enjoy your purchases in their instore coffee shop.

We have lots of books. Some from charity shops, some from book shops, some from library sales. Lots and lots of them. Bookcases in every room. This is a good thing. Books tend to be brilliant presents. Taking your kids to a bookshop is brilliant habit to have. All the best people do Wink

Posh stuff: browsed a waitrose because it was the only shop on the way home. Couldn't work out why so many people consider the brand upmarket. We buy much better produce from our local Lidl (and did).

They sound very very lucky.

@MySecretHistory

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)
Not only is this a miserable comment, but Vilbrequins are not upmarket - they reek of new money, esp when the father and son have matching ones.
PippaPots · 22/07/2021 23:08

I love the bookstore and cake outings, my poor dc have to make do with the library and greggs on the way back to the car.

At a previous job the directors used to have a car valeter come in each week to clean their cars. For his lowest bracket inside and out it was good value and convenient so I used to treat myself once a month. I always felt very grand when my keys were presented back to me. My car has currently been a perch for a diarrhoea ridden pigeon, the mess has been baked on thanks to the heatwave. Sad times.

Doodlebug71 · 22/07/2021 23:08

@peaceanddove However, since they started wearing make up I have always bought them Chanel foundation because I can't bear that chalky orange cast you see on so many teens. Is that the foundation that makes so many of them look like Morph wannabees? Grin I don't wear the stuff, but it amuses me/saddens me that so many teens choose to look like clones/morph.

TheMawisbraw · 22/07/2021 23:09

Doing the occasional food shop in m and s, we’ve only just got one in my town so it still feels slightly luxury, my kids pals think I’m posh because we have horses but one of the poor skint owners

marthasmum · 22/07/2021 23:09

I felt posh when I once bought my three kids pyjamas from
Boden (with a money off code) 😂
I had fantasies that they would sit quietly and cutely looking at books on the sofa. They were 1, 3 and 5 and this did not happen. They were nice pyjamas though

HerMammy · 22/07/2021 23:12

🤣🤣🤣🤣at the wee KKK member swanning about in her hood. 🤣🤣
