I promised a birthday cake like a volcano...

We are meeting four of his school friends outside to sing happy birthday. I’m quite friendly with two of the mums. I’ve got an hour and a half to go and choose a supermarket cake and apologise to DS (5 years old) OR style it out. I’ve got fondant dinosaurs to stick round the bottom layer too.

What would you do??

Update - he’s changed his mind and wants the big cake now he knows the orange but isn’t slimy!
brilliant, and i 100% agree with @Kitsmummy 's suggestions!!

this cake needs to be celebrated!!! i was gutted when DS had originally gone with tesco effort!!

You should see some of the monstrosities I have served up for birthday cakes. My kids are 19 and 15 now and have photos of them on their phones, they laugh but I read into it that they're secretly pleased, lol

Definitely style it out. I managed to make some horrendous cakes, the all time low being the pregnant Pikachu. Shock The kids never noticed and they are now remembered fondly. Just go for it.

My fussy, dinosaur mad 6 year old said it’s a great cake and definitely knew it was a volcano. Well done and hope they enjoy it.

We all got rained on, the wind was ferocious, but DS had a great hour and the cake tasted a lot better than I hoped Grin and DS’ friends were very excited by the volcano cake - thank you all for egging me on - if I’d listened to my inner critic I’d have binned it!

and it will be fondly remembered as the best birthday gathering for AGES. Smile Well done for doing this for your ds, and having the confidence to go ahead even though it might not have been quite what you had in mind when you started.

My teenagers love that I always made them a ridiculous homemade cake. Either that or they say they do to make me feel loved so I’m taking it as a win either way. I made a castle that looked like it had 4 dicks poking out of it once and they still think I’m fab. Happy birthday to your ds. I’m sure he will love it.

Your son is always going to remember the volcano cake his mother made him for his birthday.

I know it didn’t turn out looking like the image you had in your head. It happens to me all the time. It is still awesome. You made something with love and sugar and butter. What could be better?
