BlushBlush

We are meeting four of his school friends outside to sing happy birthday. I’m quite friendly with two of the mums. I’ve got an hour and a half to go and choose a supermarket cake and apologise to DS (5 years old) OR style it out. I’ve got fondant dinosaurs to stick round the bottom layer too.

What would you do??

It's adorable and looks like it's made with love. The perfect birthday cake Grin

emmathedilemma · 10/05/2021 14:03

It's amazing, stick the dinosaurs on!
Wrap it loosely with tin foil over the top, sit it in a box, strap it into the car seat and drive carefully.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 10/05/2021 14:04

I think it might be too late but if you have desiccated coconut and green food colouring that makes excellent ´grass’ that you could stick to the bottom layer.

Birgitz · 10/05/2021 14:04

Microwave some raspberries with a bit of sugar to make a sauce and pour it over the cake in front of the kids to be lava. Plus a sparkler candle. It will be ace!!

Babyiskickingmyribs · 10/05/2021 14:05

Also I think it’s a brilliant volcano cake though it’s not instagram perfect. Your son will probably love it anyway!

Heathofhares · 10/05/2021 14:05

Look like a volcano to me!

AlohaMolly · 10/05/2021 14:05

I LOVE the dedicated coconut and raspberries idea. I might as well keep throwing stuff at it right??

This has really made me laugh, it’s fantastic! Grin

SuperbOwls · 10/05/2021 14:07

Ooh yes definitely a bit of green coconut grass! It's great op, better than I could do!

DownWhichOfLate · 10/05/2021 14:08

Please please please post a photo of the final look!

TheVolturi · 10/05/2021 14:11

It's brilliant!

MightNeedABiggerGlass · 10/05/2021 14:14

Think you've nailed it OP Grin

I love it, obviously homemade with lots of love and inspiration - if in doubt just keep chucking things at it!

BackforGood · 10/05/2021 14:14

A home made cake isn't supposed to look professional. I think some people have had their expectations a bit warped by insanely perfect Instagram cakes! As long as it tastes nice and vaguely resembles the thing it's supposed to, then you're winning. And IMO this far, far surpasses a "vague" resemblance.

This ^

It is truely lovely, and definitely made with love and I hope these efforts become a fondly anticipated tradition in your house.

........ though I am a bit worried about putting it in the car and driving it anywhere.....

Hohofortherobbers · 10/05/2021 14:14

This cake is hilarious!!! You have to take the cake, if it slides it will be all the more authentic!! Grin

diddl · 10/05/2021 14:15

I think it's wonderful.

I wouldn't even have known where to start.

It's for a 5yr old!

He'll love it!

EverythingRuined · 10/05/2021 14:17

It wouldn't cross my mind that the kids would be disappointed. It's huge, tasty and covered in icing..it's most kids dream. My kids cakes were kid orientated rather than posting on social media orientated.

Ninkanink · 10/05/2021 14:18

It’s an epic cake and with the dinosaur props a 5 year old will think it’s cool! Style it out, definitely!

Aww just seen that you panic bought another...you really didn’t need to.

But you can’t ever go wrong with twice as much cake!

Babyiskickingmyribs · 10/05/2021 14:19

Promise us you’ll send a photo of it’s final state - including any damage sustained in transit! :)
And I think this terrifying + hilarious cake fail will make you feel proud of your edible volcano.

I wish I had a picture of a wishing well I made for dd once - it was bright green & awful truly ghastly
But dd didn't mind - now as a mature adult she regards it with fond (& rather hysterically funny awful) memories
I think your volcano is great & it will be remembered fondly as dc grows up because you made it

Babyiskickingmyribs · 10/05/2021 14:20

If it does fall over you can tell the kids there was an earthquake.

Bluey18 · 10/05/2021 14:25

I make my daughter an awful cake every year, its tradition! Yours is much better than my last attempt haha.

(I would probably whip up some buttercream icing and cover the green in your shoes but I tend to throw things at my cakes haha)

AlohaMolly · 10/05/2021 14:25

You lot are fabulous. I’ve messaged one of the mums saying it’s terrible, I’m bringing prosecco, please don’t judge and she said she never judges if there’s prosecco!

I’m going to attempt to style it out. It’s his second ‘lockdown’ birthday, the first birthday he’s had proper friends and he’s so excited it makes me tear up. He’s got balloons for the first time that will probably get destroyed in the wind and we will probably all get soaked and it will last five minutes before we all cave and go home, but hopefully he will enjoy himself!

I did try and take it off the stand but, if nothing else, that beast is heavy

I think it's lovely especially now with the dinosaurs. My daughter would love this, 100% 😁

mumwon · 10/05/2021 14:30

Frankly op if its (vaguely) edible its a success & if (Sorry!) it gives adults a laugh - that's a win win
I love it!
