My husband received something very strange in the post ...

OnSilverStars · 12/01/2021 11:05

In the post today, my husband received a letter. It was hand written with his name and address on the outside. No return info. The writing in the envelope is definitely a woman's

Inside is a copy of an "essay" I googled it and it's by Robert Louise Stevenson. It called "on Marriage"

The gist of it is that marriage has lots of ups and downs and requires communication

There is nothing else. No name, just a folded print out of this essay.

Any explanation, other than my fear? I have no reason other than this to suspect anything.

YABU - don't jump to conclusions

YANBU - he's cheated.

I'm shaking. This feels so surreal. I hope I'm overreacting. He's currently at work.

Ps. We open each other's post. We think nothing of it - usually. It's always junk or bills

@BettyAndVeronica

I would have been suspicious too OP. In fact, I would still be slightly suspicious. When I have had an eye test at work they didn't send out a photocopied essay on marriage.
She said his Dad got one too.
NoSquirrels · 13/01/2021 00:05

@OnSilverStars

So for those who haven't seen my update.

It was an eye test for work. 🙈🤣

Sent out by a lady who didn't think to include what it was.

I've told my husband my brain jumped to cheating and we laughed.

He though he was being stalked by a serial killer.

It's been a LONG boring year!

Most excitement we've had

OMG. Amazing.

Told you it'd be something banal! Grin

@dinglethedragon

re "beyond the pale" - the pale was the part of Ireland under English control in the middle ages .... nothing to do with skin colour 🤨
This! Nothing to do with colour. Pales are fence lats. Beyond the pale means outside of the village or town.

Read about Brian Boru.

Fefifobum · 13/01/2021 01:14

Well that’s 10 mins I’ll never see again, what a load of shite!

BaggoMcoys · 13/01/2021 01:37

@Fefifobum

Well that’s 10 mins I’ll never see again, what a load of shite!
Huh? Confused

Are you anrgy that the letter turned out to be from an opticians, rather than a juicy affair story?

This isn't a soap opera you know! Apologies if I've misunderstood your post.

CatRamsey · 13/01/2021 01:46

This is amazing

NoseinBook3 · 13/01/2021 01:49

That’s actually batshit. I can’t believe it was to check his eyesight Grin

I open my husbands mail all the time and he does for me too... or we did when we weren’t stuck at home

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 13/01/2021 01:58

🤣 I'm just picturing someone in an office photocopying, putting the pages in envelopes, franking them and sending them off not even considering if an explanation is needed 🤦‍♀️

Also another that opens the household mail, dh just doesn't bother, he only tends to get mail around election time anyway, all the parties write to him, never me...

Furries · 13/01/2021 01:58

@puddled2

Haven't read all of post...but find there is always a cliff hanger ...will see what happens later ,tomorrow etc etc
You’ll need to go back a few pages from you post - tomorrow will probably just be more people who are horrified that the OP and her DH open each other’s post 🤣
Wheresmykimchi · 13/01/2021 02:26

@ShizeItsWeegie but it's still racist though Confused

sortmylifeoutplease · 13/01/2021 02:29

@OnSilverStars

This was the font difference! Not that much 🙈

Love it how some people are still arguing that I should open my husbands mail. 😂 good old mums net, eh?!

Glad there's a good explanation! I'd have been v freaked out to receive this.
Thedogscollar · 13/01/2021 02:47

@OnSilverStars
Omg that's hilarious an eye test.
Well now you don't need to LTBGrinWink

ShizeItsWeegie · 13/01/2021 04:46
@ShizeItsWeegie but it's still racist though Confused
How? How the hell is the saying, beyond the pale racist? People from inside the pale and outside the pale were Irish and so of the same race.

GoldfishParade · 13/01/2021 04:48

Yeah, there's nothing racist or offensive re beyond the pale.

And letter opening is weird. Are you that nosy/is your partner that helpless that... You cant just leave it for them to do? It's controlling.

Sinful8 · 13/01/2021 04:49

@LochJessMonster

Occam’s Razor - the simplest explanation is the most likely to be correct.

If he’s not actually cheated, he’s confided in someone about your marriage (and not in a positive way)

I am so tempted to send out a bunch of letters to random residential addresses either love letters or "I'm sorry we just can't keep doing this affair" type things and see the threads start Grin
Gunpowder · 13/01/2021 05:00

Grin I love the outcome of this thread. It’s the polar opposite of a fantastical troll thread where it would transpire OP’s husband was a bigamist and had three other wives (obvs that would be good reading).

I open all my DH’s post too. Otherwise our house would be repossessed following an unpaid parking fine from 2011.

Frannibananni · 13/01/2021 05:01

Best thread ever lol

I open my husbands post and he opens mine 🤷🏽 We also read out each other’s text messages if they come through and we are busy. We have nothing to hide. I thought that was normal.

Ch3rish · 13/01/2021 06:26
@ShizeItsWeegie but it's still racist though Confused
Its nothing to do with race, I looked it up once before after seeing it on a thread, have you @Wheresmykimchi, it's somethingt do with fences and boundaries

Cheeseandwin5 · 13/01/2021 08:07

@Echobelly
I'm just relieved most people were interested in what it could be and thinking maybe JWs rather than it being the usual 'Sorry, he's definitely having an affair, LTB!!!!' response for anyone raising anything that might even vaguely question their relationship.
He's lucky MN didn't lead to you being in the middle packing your (or his) bags when he got home!

Sadly thats not true, I counted 6 ( @LochJessMonster , @LaBellina , @Houggbfhhbdfg , @Icanseegreenshoots, @MissMarpleDarling @Viviennemary ) as others all trying to point to it and that was on the first few pages. It seems some ppl are more wanting to break up relationships than help and actually think what is the most logical answer. Even if you didnt think the letter had come from the optician, it is ridiculous to that a lovely man who had never given their partner any sreason to worry would be condemned on this flimsy evidence, but than again as I said for some, thi8s is not about helping.

CarinaMarina · 13/01/2021 08:42

This thread is everything. Posters have called out almost a full house of 'isms, criticised the OP's marriage because they open one another's post, and the OW's sinister letter turned out to be an eye test (fully verified by the entirely innocent sender).

Amazing, cheers OP. Bet you're glad you turned to MN eh?

peridito · 13/01/2021 08:46

and I love it that you both had a good laugh over you entertaining the idea that he was having an affair .

you both sound lovely .

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 13/01/2021 09:21

I hurried to read this as soon as I woke up this morning! I love mysteries. Funny and satisfying result. (And I learnt what a Jaeger eye test is.)
Glad it’s all fine, OP.

OnSilverStars · 13/01/2021 09:29

Thanks so everyone who enjoyed the post.

We actually are lovely people. We don't fight or sulk with each other or betray each other in even little ways so I don't know why I was such a psycho yesterday.

I'm on maternity leave with a new baby and I think my husband going out in the world when I'm at home, all day, everyday with my DCs has made me nuts Confused

I have been chuckling regularly about this. And my god. I can't believe some of these women on here could even read their phone screen from their high fucking horse 😂
