My husband received something very strange in the post ...

In the post today, my husband received a letter. It was hand written with his name and address on the outside. No return info. The writing in the envelope is definitely a woman's

Inside is a copy of an "essay" I googled it and it's by Robert Louise Stevenson. It called "on Marriage"

The gist of it is that marriage has lots of ups and downs and requires communication

There is nothing else. No name, just a folded print out of this essay.

Any explanation, other than my fear? I have no reason other than this to suspect anything.

YABU - don't jump to conclusions

YANBU - he's cheated.

I'm shaking. This feels so surreal. I hope I'm overreacting. He's currently at work.

Ps. We open each other's post. We think nothing of it - usually. It's always junk or bills

I don't understand how an eye test can work like this .I've googled jaeger eye test but it's a reference to the card with text on it that you read at the opticians .

Is this an eye test you do at home on your own ???

Sway19 · 12/01/2021 20:19

OP I just read all your updates. It read like a murder mystery novel, so full of suspense. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat 😂😂😂

lynsey91 · 12/01/2021 20:19

@Nonamesavail

I'm sure some people think its normal but I find opening each others post especially hand written notes just horrifying.
Horrifying! Not much of an over reaction.

Plenty of couples open each others' post. Me and DH do (although its mainly me opening it as I am the one at home all week).

Why does it matter to you?

Calmandmeasured1 · 12/01/2021 20:21

Blinking 'ek OP, I have spent ages googling and trying to find something that would put your mind at rest.

What is the connection with Tyneside and, as a PP stated, you said he works with family. Are we missing something?

I don't see (no pun intended) why not.
At the opticians they ask you what's the smallest font you can read.
No reason that can't be done at home and you just tell them. Of course, they rely on you telling the truth as you're not actually reading it out to them.

He works all over the country (and world) at different manufacturing sites and he goes to one in Newcastle once a year. The insurance require him to take an eye test as his job could be very unsafe if he made a mistake.
He said he usually takes the test when he gets there but I guess the sent it out to him due to covid? 🤷🏻‍♀️ not sure yet. His dad got one too

OMG. IT WAS FOR AN EYE TEST FROM WORK 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Have they not heard of opticians?

LaMarschallin · 12/01/2021 20:30

Have they not heard of opticians?

When I was due an eye test and contact lens check in early December, the optician did as much of it as they could over the phone to reduce face-to-face contact.

nyenc · 12/01/2021 20:31

Hahahahahhahaha that's hilarious 😂

Glad the mystery is solved

That makes sense now, although it doesn't seem like an effcient way to do an eye test. Do they just ring up and ask him if he could read it Grin
Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 12/01/2021 20:34

@theDudesmummy

This thread has been an intriguing read! But the issue people have with couples opening each other's mail, that is odd too, for me. DH would never bother to open a single piece of mail in our house, that's my job. If I was to say here's something for you, he would say well what is it then? (If someone is having an affair it is hardly likely to show up in the snail mail anyway, is it?)
Exactly the same here, @theDudesmummy. I get quite annoyed, I am expected to open everything, whether it's addressed to me, us as a couple, or him alone. My job. And ditto on snail mail and an affair. Grin

Also, an eye-test? What's that about?1

ktp100 · 12/01/2021 20:35

I'm so glad I came back to check how this was panning out, OP!!!

Just. BRILLIANT!!

saveforthat · 12/01/2021 20:36

He needs to drive to Barnard Castle and check he can read it there

babbaloushka · 12/01/2021 20:42

What a fantastic resolution.

Thank you to all the PP who came out in full force about mail opening, typographical misogyny, agism and most importantly, who owns a photocopier.

hollyhope · 12/01/2021 20:43

Well, that's passed half an hour til bedtime.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 12/01/2021 20:48

Glad you got to the bottom of it OP! I enjoyed the intrigue while it lastedGrin

Alicenwonderland · 12/01/2021 20:49

Great thread!
Intrigue, suspense, confusion, mini debates irrelevant to the actual post, regular updates from the op and a happy, funny ending! After a thoroughly rubbish day this has cheered up my evening! Thanks op and glad it had a happy ending!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 12/01/2021 20:49

But did neither of you notice that the size of the font varied in the different paragraphs?

S111n20 · 12/01/2021 20:50

😂😂😂

SciFiScream · 12/01/2021 20:50

@babbaloushka I'm off to find out more about differences in writing! I was a PP who said that people can't tell my writing apart from my DH's. Small sample of 2 though!

I wonder if it means my writing is more masculine or his is more feminine?

I'm fascinated by it. I'd have put money on it being one of those "neutral" things and all dependent on when and where you learned joined up writing but this thread has proved otherwise. I fancy taking photos of our writing and sharing it here to see what people say. GrinGrinGrin

ChristmasAlone · 12/01/2021 20:54

I'd be pissed if someone opened what is clearly a handwritten letter regardless of whether you open each others letters

I agree though you can tend to tell what gender someone is by their handwriting

Palavah · 12/01/2021 20:54

[quote user1471565182]Normal people can easily recognise handwriting gender. I can and assume most others can, its not a magic skill.

That's not at all what this article says!

OnSilverStars · 12/01/2021 20:56

This was the font difference! Not that much 🙈

Love it how some people are still arguing that I should open my husbands mail. 😂 good old mums net, eh?!

Love it! (And we open each other's post as he works away quite a lot and I deal with the household stuff).

Whilst I know it's not from JW he got one last week regarding 'homes', house has just sold, but clearly had return address on envelope but annoying as we've asked them not to contact us.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/01/2021 21:08

I've only just come across this thread - such a pity as I could have put you out of your misery hours ago OP. I used to use these tests in a previous job.

And I agree you can often have a good guess at the gender re handwriting
