Can't get the fricking lids off these jars!

I know this is a first world problem, but if anyone can offer any cunning solution to aid me try and get into these jars I would be most grateful. I have tried the usual techniques, tapping lid on floor, even took a hammer to one in a fit of pique. Nothing. Nothing at all...gah!

Grin I do sometimes wonder if Ocado Jesus has any idea he was briefly a MN legend (and now lives on, in me).

Neil tut tut, write out 100 times 'I must RTFT' and no tuna for you for 3 weeks.

Quietly confident Cake, thank you. I'm currently in training by drinking beer and eating crisps.

I’m glad I didn’t see the thread last week, only just read through & am suddenly hugely invested! I can’t believe you’re making me wait til tomorrow!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/07/2020 18:20

is it open yet??

pics and a video please, this is almost more exciting than a pus filled spot thread!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/07/2020 18:21

Grin Attempt number one will be made at approximately 9.30am, after churros (I have a churros maker).

SummerHouse · 17/07/2020 18:23

Oh my god this is as exciting as the second coming. In fact all the signs are here that it is the second coming. Jesus is here. We have fish. Just need bread and wine which I am having for tea. (With baked camembert, we are not pesants).

DameFanny · 17/07/2020 18:40

What is a churro maker and do I want one? I mean, I know what a churro is, but is there some sort of pastry-extruder-deep-fryer going on?

Taranta · 17/07/2020 18:41

As I pm'd @JesusInTheCabbageVan earlier, I am preparing myself for humiliation (albeit gratifying if offending jar actually gives forth its delicious contents) when Jesus manages to open it at first try, one-handed, whilst juggling cats and declining Latin verbs. Or whatever.

Bring on the ignominy!! Grin

@Redpriestandmozart

Turn jars upside down, tap hard on the countertop (teatowel down to dampen thud) it releases the vacuum and you should be able to open them (right way up again).

^ this!

SummerHouse · 17/07/2020 18:46

Respectfully people, we don't need anymore jar opening suggestions. We have Jesus 🙏

SummerHouse · 17/07/2020 18:48

Remember @Taranta whatever happens, you loosened it.

MrsGrindah · 17/07/2020 18:51

Surely the answer is to give it to a nice hunky man with large biceps and a tight T-shirt? Or am I confusing that with a porn film I once watched?

Well I did give it to exH (who is here during lockdown so he can see the kids Hmm) and he failed several times to open either jar on separate occasions.

There again, he is in no way a nice hunky man with large biceps and a tight T-shirt...

Stand down every one I have a fool proof solution . It's never failed yet...

Take the jar and go to a door . Open the door , turn the pot on its side and place between the crack of the door hinge side so the jar lid is in the crack .. now CAREFULLY and SLOWLY close the door.. you don't want the door to get paint chips or if wood, to splinter.. you will hear a little 'whoosh' of air escaping..

Now open jar in normal fashion ..

😆

waterjungle · 17/07/2020 19:36

Tap where the top of the lid meets the lip of the jar with the blunt side of a knife - all the way around. Good hard whacks so it leaves marks. It loosens the lid from the thread of the jar.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/07/2020 19:40

Peace be with you, my children 🙏👼

Mr Jesus is categorically NOT getting his hands on this jar. This is a MN solidarity thing - if I can't get it open (which I will, so ner) it's going to the next volunteer. (Plus I'm the one who usually opens tricky jars for him anyway.)

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/07/2020 19:42

Ah, churro maker. I have this one, and very nice it is too. Will post a churro pic tomorrow Grin

userxx · 17/07/2020 19:43

I'm ridiculously excited for tomorrow 🐠

TimeWastingButFun · 17/07/2020 19:44

Something that works EVERY time: tap the side of the lid sharply three times on a hard edge (worktop or similar) turn it and tap the other side. It will open!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/07/2020 19:45

@Taranta DS says thank you very much for his Haribo. Up until now he has only known MN as the mysterious entity that stops him monologuing to me about Minecraft, so he's intrigued to learn that it occasionally bestows gifts.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/07/2020 19:49

@SummerHouse that is VERY true. Would any of you like to post me some bread? Don't tell me none of you have managed to perfect your sourdough starter - you've had four months.

fuckedandbombed · 17/07/2020 19:50

Look on you tube . Take the jar and tap the edge of the lid on a worktop ...keep turning and tapping. Always works .

xsquared · 17/07/2020 19:54

I never got the tapping thing. The thing that works every time for me is inserting the tip of a sharp knife or skewer and pushing it until the lid pops to release the vacuum.

But but... I have one of these, fondly known in our house as the Dutch cap.

It also helps to be left handed.

I'm left handed!! Fate or what?
