I know this is a first world problem, but if anyone can offer any cunning solution to aid me try and get into these jars I would be most grateful. I have tried the usual techniques, tapping lid on floor, even took a hammer to one in a fit of pique. Nothing. Nothing at all...gah!

I can't believe I didn't see this thread the first time! Brilliant 👏👏

DrFoxtrot · 18/08/2022 22:14

This could take the place of the carpet fitters thread that reached 1000 and can never be resurrected 😭. It could come back every year when someone posts a helpful jar opening tip without RTFT.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 23/07/2022 19:50

TFW you get resurrected wayyy later than the third day 👻

😂😂😂

I have problems opening most things nowadays including packets of biscuits and toothpaste tubes that have a seal around the opening. Yesterday I bought 4 rolls of sellotape and the struggle to break the seal on them was unbelievable!!!

Mcjim · 11/02/2023 21:12

Just pop on a marigold and the lid will cone off very easily

The lids came off over 2 years ago 🤦🏻‍♀️

terrijohnson56 · 15/02/2023 14:11

Wrap a wide elastic band round the lid and turn , works every time x

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/02/2023 14:37

Zombie thread, I’m afraid, @terrijohnson56 -over two years old.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 15/02/2023 20:58

Yes. The OP got the jar open by putting her trust in Jesus.

Stettafire · 25/04/2023 16:47

When I broke one of my hands I used a butter knife, slid it under the lid (need to slide it around the screw top, but this works with screw tops too) and lever up the lid until the seal breaks

JillyDe · 13/10/2023 10:52

To remove a metal lid, heat a damp cloth in the microwave. Get it really hot and remove it carefully with a teatowel. Wrap it over the metal lid and leave for a few seconds . With the teatowel still in place. try to unscrew it. If need be, leave it a bit longer or if no longer hot, re-heat the damp cloth.

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 13/10/2023 16:37

Anyone who doesn't RTFT here is really missing out. Honestly.

xcam · 12/11/2023 20:01

Simple.
Wearing a pair of loose-fit rubber work gloves...

  1. Put the jar in your empty sink.
  2. Pour boiling water over the TOP (do NOT remove from sink )
  3. Grab jar and immediately remove lid.

Works every time.

Caveats:
Don't pour boiling water on your hands!
Boiling water does not break the jar. It would only do so if you smothered the whole thing in boiling water.

Why does this work?
Because the thin layer of sealant that is on the inside of all metal caps is momentarily softened by the heat from the boiling water, thin metal being an almost instant conductor of heat. Preparation and immediacy are vital. You can't get a firm grip on both jar and top without the rubber gloves. Leaving the jar on the firm base of the sink enables you to get maximum purchase on it. It's my own solution, figured out after much frustration! Never had a problem since.

Happy opening💙

FlamingoAndJohn · 12/11/2023 20:05

Just a hunch but three years, one pandemic, three prime ministers and two monarchs later (I think, I didn’t fact check) the op has most likely opened the jars.

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 12/11/2023 21:23

The OP managed it with the help of Jesus, as I recall.

RTFT. It’s a good one.

Mamabear04 · 28/11/2023 13:04

Band the edge of the lid on a hard surface. It will knock the air out of it and you will be able to open them. Works every time! (Might need to try twice!)

xcam · 28/11/2023 18:08

EH? There's no air IN it!!! If there were the contents would rot. That's the whole point of a VACUUM.

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 28/11/2023 18:24

Never mind that. Read the thread and discover the power of Jesus.

Bable · 11/03/2024 07:35

Bang edge of lids on bench, easy to open, one of my Mam's tips

Bable · 11/03/2024 07:36

Open lids of jars bang edge of lids on countertop

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 11/03/2024 07:54

Just RTFT, @Bable. It’s worth it.

I'm wondering if I've got the initial message wrong? No one has mentioned a jar opener. Lakeland them, John Lewis do them. Pouring warm to mild hotwater on the metal top or placing the metal top in warm water may do the trick as the metal lid is likely to expand --enough to do the trick.

The thread was started in 2020. I'm wondering if you have actually read any of the (over 300) replies. :-)
