Can't get the fricking lids off these jars!

I know this is a first world problem, but if anyone can offer any cunning solution to aid me try and get into these jars I would be most grateful. I have tried the usual techniques, tapping lid on floor, even took a hammer to one in a fit of pique. Nothing. Nothing at all...gah!

Btw here is my churros recipe (specially adapted for churros makers):

1 egg
140g self raising flour
1tbsp caster sugar
55g softened butter
200ml water or thereabouts - till you can pour it easily but not too easily
Pinch cinnamon

Makes maybe 12 big churros.

Dust with mix of sugar and cinnamon and serve with big bowl of melted (ideally dark) chocolate.

Choux · 21/07/2020 20:35

I have bought every fish item mentioned on this thread. I may try the tuna for lunch tomorrow - if I can open it!

Loving the waitrose review!

Choux · 21/07/2020 20:37

Not sure where the photo went...

Choux · 21/07/2020 20:40

Final attempt - if it doesn't work it's a jar of the albacore plus tins of sardine picante and sardine al limone...

Let me know what the lemony sardines are like, @Choux.

Mine are still lurking at the back of the cupboard.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 21/07/2020 21:10

I didn't even know you could get tuna in a jar.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/07/2020 21:11

Well, it's naice tuna!

pickingdaisies · 22/07/2020 08:30

I am absolutely raging. Typical mumsnet, there's a global pandemic, and you lot are wittering on about jars of tuna, bordering on blasphemous - (stops and looks around) .... Oh look, we're in classics! (Smiles most winning smile, adjusts hairdo, curtseys)
Also I am definitely buying a churro maker. There may be dark days ahead when I need to open a stubborn jar. Churros and dark chocolate sauce will be my salvation.

SoupDragon · 22/07/2020 08:34

Churros and dark chocolate sauce will be my salvation.

But only if you can open the sauce,

Genius Ocado review!

I can see the puzzled faces of non-MNers now!

TokyoSushi · 25/07/2020 21:47

Oh my, I can't believe I missed this thread live, I would have loved it! Well done everybody!!

silvercollie · 26/07/2020 09:08

Not read all these posts so someone may have explained. By piercing the top you release the vacuum which then allows the lid to be removed as normal.

ManAmongWomen · 26/07/2020 09:53

What you need is a Jar Key - Google it. Best couple of quid you’ll ever spend

No, all you need is Jesus.

And a sharp tap on a work top.

This is also one time when it’s REALLY worth RTFT.

@TokyoSushi
I couldn’t believe I found this thread at 9.29AM on the magical tuna opening day. It was as if it was a sign from a higher being (otherwise known as @JesusInTheCabbageVan).

I also can’t believe that when I tried to order tinned tuna from waitrose a few weeks ago, absolutely none was available and their only offering was this tuna in a jar. Which I said no to. I have deprived myself of so much tuna opening fun. Whoever thought I would ever write that sentence?!

AdaColeman · 27/07/2020 14:17

Smashing thread!

Just as an extra for all those who "stick a sharp knife under the lid rim", always have a look at the the rim for a "stick it here" sign. Lots of companies add a mark to the rim where the seal is weaker, often it's a little crown, for instance on Maille jars, or Ponti have 3 dots.

I absolutely need a churro maker! Brew Brew

AdaColeman · 27/07/2020 14:21

Oh meant to say, those lemon sardines are fab broken up a little and used for sardine pasta or with cous-cous with tomatoes & olives.

Taranta · 27/07/2020 21:09

Right, let’s hope these jarred fuckers aren’t cut from the same Stalinist cloth as their Albacore relations...Hmm

I am in love with this thread! All hail Jesus!

Please update us on the anchovy situation OP - the spirit of MN needs you

VickyEadieofThigh · 30/07/2020 09:42

I have enjoyed this thread very much.

I have to ask, however (as someone who has only ever bought tinned tuna) - how much does the Waitrose naice tuna cost?
