Which is the tastiest Protestant traybake?

1000 replies

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 08/03/2019 17:35

NI Protestants are famed for their tray bakes but which is the best traybake of all?

I’m thinking something crunchy and chocolatey, a tiffin like thing. But are there unchocolatey traybakes that I just haven’t been exposed to? Are they keeping all the best recipes to themselves, strictly to be eaten behind closed doors?

And does it get a bit competitive? Does Annie cast aspersions on Doris’ traybaking abilities?

As someone with a foot in each camp, I've got to say that, although Protestants do love a good tray bake, anyone who thinks they're only a Protestant thing has never been to a Catholic wake!

To answer the question, I'm partial to fifteens, but ye cannae beat a caramel square.

But here, while we're on the subject, what about a wee Mars and apple sandwich beforehand?

MadeinBelfast · 08/03/2019 18:33

Not strictly a tray bake but top hats are great. I'm always asked to bring them along to birthday parties for English friends! Mars bar crispy slices, malteaser tray bakes and a raspberry flavoured coconut thing with chocolate on top (no idea what it's called) are all excellent too!

A decent flapjack too. And its the law to have homemade shortbread at all events where a cup of coffee might be.

3out · 08/03/2019 18:37

And doodlebug slices.

S1naidSucks · 08/03/2019 18:38

It was the bloody Pope that started it! I’m never going to be able to take holy communion again without thinking of tray bakes! 😭

Holy crap I’ve no idea what’s going on in this thread (maybe because I’m atheist - what do atheists have?!) but that recipe for fifteens sounds amazing. Never heard of them before but want some now.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 08/03/2019 18:39

Definitely homemade shortbread! Mmmmmmmm.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 08/03/2019 18:40

what do atheists have?!

Nothing. We have nothing Sad

MrsJayy · 08/03/2019 18:41

SleepDeprivedCabbageBrain · 08/03/2019 18:42

Haha!! I remember moving to England and being v confused that nobody knew WTF a traybake was Grin.

MrsJayy · 08/03/2019 18:43

Millionaire shortbread was a favourite of the church ladies when we did coffee mornings

longwayoff · 08/03/2019 18:44

There's that Quaker thing. Dammit, forgotten its name. A sponge traybake with pink icing flavoured and coloured with mulberry and sprinkled with coconut. Bother! What's It called?

PrawnOfCreation · 08/03/2019 18:44

This thread is going to be life changing. Is this why people get excited when they find religion?

MrsJayy · 08/03/2019 18:45

We love a traybake in Scotland

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 08/03/2019 18:45

To this day I sneak into proddy church halls to get at their cakes. Only this morning I had a wonderful streusel traybake up at the Methodists, while they also entertained DS.

I bet they get into heaven first - I couldn't even really argue against it.

lesstalkingmorelistening · 08/03/2019 18:45

Try using mint aero bubbles instead of cherries in fifteens - much nicer! I’ve also made them with jelly babies, but prefer the aero!
Love a Protestant traybake!

Bookworm4 · 08/03/2019 18:46

@amlthatbloodycold
Do they allow mint?
😂😂😂😂😂😂

No @BobTheDuvet, paradise slices and fifteens are def not the same thing - both are very delicious though!

Lammingtons?

FlaviaAlbia · 08/03/2019 18:46

The food at the Methodist church baby group not too far from me is reportedly so good people come for miles around for the baking.

It's taking attendees away from the Presbyterian and Catholic baby groups Grin

FlaviaAlbia · 08/03/2019 18:47

However to answer the question, it's probably the raspberry or lemon slices

Chocolatepeanuts · 08/03/2019 18:48

Firstborn aye but the traybakes for a Catholic wake are supplied by the Protestant neighbours Wink ime anyway

rosablue · 08/03/2019 18:49

English and Welsh through and through so not sure if this would be allowed but my mother's tray'bake' recipe for a fridgecake has been my favourite since I was small.
INvolves dark chocolate, crushed digestive biscuits, glace cherries, chopped walnuts, and double the quantity of brandy to the recipe. There might also be some beaten egg and sugar in it, and/or melted butter (it's a long time since I made it!) and then all poured into a tin and left to set. Heaven.

My mother still makes me one for christmas every year Grin = I do offer it to the dc occasionally but they turn their noses up at it, seems my telling them they are too young to drink has actually stuck. Not that bothered - all the more for me!
