My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

When I was a guide, practising campfire skills, my group made chicken stew followed by stewed apples and custard. So I definitely believe that badger and rice is possible.

Dahlietta · 16/11/2018 12:25

Fuck me, your ex loves In the woods and his kitchen is better equipped than mine

What, is he dogging now too?!

Satonsofasad · 16/11/2018 12:29

Why are you all bullying the op? This could be genuine if you read between the lines

Steamedbadger · 16/11/2018 12:30

I have nothing to add, I'm just showing off my new user name

longwayoff · 16/11/2018 12:32

Steamed badger with mole sauce and rice? Stoatally acceptable.

usernamealreadytaken · 16/11/2018 12:37

Errol darn I missed the McDonald's Brockfast. If they're going literal, I might avoid the hash browns Grin

FitzChivalryFarseer · 16/11/2018 12:39

Anyway. Must(elidae) dash.

This is genius. Top marks @HebeMumsnet.

longwayoff · 16/11/2018 12:40

Oakmaiden you're probably not old enough to remember the Defra advice about the harmless new disease of cows that turned out to cause fatal CJD in people. Nor the sight of Tory MP John Gummer jamming a burger into his small daughter's mouth whilst insisting eating beef was fine.

WorldofTofuness · 16/11/2018 12:40

I know some eat quite a lot of, uh, recycled grass (sheepshit, horseshit) - practically vegetarian, more omnivorous than other breeds surely?grinenvy[not envy]

Not the Labs I grew up with. Fox and human shit whenever they could get them. Any kind of dead animal: the more disintegrating the better. I remember one of the dogs finding something really stinky and that poor little Labrador brain getting exercised as to whether it was better to eat it or roll in it first. Yes, the 2nd-hand vegetation also came in--but as side salad, not the whole meal.

DM recounts how after a kids' party when DB and I were small, she'd let the Lab into the kitchen for a go at discarded food. Dog would eat pretty much everything, but drew the line at pickled onion Monster Munch. Grin

I can't believe that your ex cooked his friend after running over him in his automobile!

Bad Mr. Toad.

Where are you OP? Come back and share your thoughts about the comedy gold that you have inspired? I hope the kids are ok!

Loyaultemelie · 16/11/2018 13:08

Never mind the Badger and rice my phone is playing up and won't play things for some reason and now I'm concerned someone has eaten Jerome Flynn Ozzybat

EmilyRosiEl · 16/11/2018 13:08

Perhaps your Ex was just joking to try to stress you out? Why else would he send you a pic of a badger days earlier?

If this isn't a troll post then definitely take them to a doctor to be seen. If it was roadkill it could be dangerous to eat.

Ok, so let’s assume it is real and the OP’s children had a lovely lunch of steamed badger and rice (hopefully appropriately seasoned, you wouldn’t want bland badger) , sorry, sidetracked for a moment.

What is the cause for concern? I can see no complaints that they didn’t like it, excellent children with a varied palate. So, TB transmission is the concern from the OP.

TB is not usually transmitted orally. It is a respiratory pathogen, transferred via inhalation of sprayed bacteria from coughs, sneezes, talking etc.

Human TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Bovine (and badger TB) is caused by Mycobacterium bovis. There is a negligible risk of the bovine kind infecting people via unpasteurised/raw milk or extremely rarely handling raw meat. Carcasses of cattle with evidence of TB can still enter the human food chain because of the risk of transmission being so low.

Now, we have a roadkilled badger (most common cause of badger death in the UK) and we don’t know if it even had TB (around 1 in 3 do). It was thoroughly cooked and I doubt they were eating lungs. The children had no exposure to raw meat. The odds of TB transmission are so low as to be nonexistent.

There would be a far greater risk of contamination from the badger being past his best. But, this occurred several days ago and food poisoning has not occurred, so this is not a concern.

There you are, hopefully the sort of reassurance that you feel we should all have been posting.

well....at least he fed them. ..

waxy1 · 16/11/2018 13:14

You’re very calm.

I’d be ratelled.

Hi all. It's lunchtime so I can finally stop peeking at my phone under my desk and write something. Glad you have been enjoying this thread and thanks so much for those who have tried to sett my mind at rest. Kids are good. Have grilled them, for more info but all I have gleaned is that he found the dead badger. Seeing his camp is a long way from the nearest road I doubt it was road kill. He told the kids it was fresh so assume it turned up near his camp and he knew it had not been there for long. Am trying to work out how to get photo off Whatsapp.
