My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

I've never(knowingly) eaten roadkill but I did once have some pheasant that had flown through someone's window.

The link upthread about the guy who eats lots of roadkill was a bit boaksome - especially his preference for Labrador. But I suppose that makes some sense - unlike lean wild animals, it'd probably be nicely marbled with fat, the Wag-yu of roadkill.

Letsmoveondude · 16/11/2018 12:01

Fuck me, your ex loves In the woods and his kitchen is better equipped than mine! I got to page 3 and am I’m tears at some of the comments. The dog wants to know why I’m howling.

PinsPegs · 16/11/2018 12:07

Op Pleeeeaaaaseeeee post the picture that your ex sent you of the badger. Please! I want to see it. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I guess you are busy but your posts are rather minimal. I am aware that you can chose to post whatever you want and are not obliged to post any proper information but it's frustrating when you get these threads where the OP drops some extremely weird bit of info then leaves the info hanging.

You are a long standing poster so you know exactly how these threads go.

Delighted to wake up and find this thread is still going, brilliance from you lot

Uh, no. Have you seen what Labradors actually eat when they get a chance?

Did you not get the part about it being dead?Confused just do an image search if you want some nice badger pictures.

hooveringhamabeads · 16/11/2018 12:12

I’ve just seen this while driving around and had to go back to take a photo.

OP, I think your ex is in Somerset today. Maybe he’s started a mobile badger vending unit after the rip-roaring success with the DC at the NHM.

Must(elidae) dash

I see what you did there

If you ask me, you need to put a HOLT to this kind of thing immediately ...

Pigeonpresent · 16/11/2018 12:18

Surely too plain with rice. Badger burger, badger bolognese but not with rice.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/11/2018 12:18

I know some eat quite a lot of, uh, recycled grass (sheepshit, horseshit) - practically vegetarian, more omnivorous than other breeds surely?GrinEnvy[not envy]

My local Budgens sells squirrel

hibbledibble · 16/11/2018 12:19

This thread is hilarious. The mental image of a man carrying steamed badger in Tupperware round the natural history museum..

Whoever asked: yes you can bring your own food there. They ask that you eat in downstairs.

I would be angry if this was my children, but then they are vegetarian. Pork would be just as bad.

Looking forward to the Masterchef Roadkill Special

I can see the look on Monica Galletti's face during the Skills Test

That, we do need a photo of.

usernamealreadytaken · 16/11/2018 12:21

MrsFlora although badgers are widely thought of as carnivores, they are closer to omnivores as they scavenge roots, shoots, berries, veg and fallen fruits/nuts etc, so most of the meat is edible and is likely to be like wild boar.

OP - you can weasily google to check the low likelihood of your DC contracting bovine TB from the badger (or any other livestock). You otter just keep an eye on them to be stoatally sure though. You might want to sett some clear guidelines for your ex when he's taking DCs out and feeding them - no more BrockDonalds!! Grin (sorry, trying far too hard Blush )

JoyceTempleSavage · 16/11/2018 12:21

Bravo Hissy

ErrolTheDragon · 16/11/2018 12:22

Username - I think 'brockfast' was what you were searching for there.

frogsoup · 16/11/2018 12:24

I think the fact so many people think this is made up suggests they lead sheltered lives! Eating roadkill is a thing. So is being homeless and sleeping in woods and being a parent. Admittedly putting the badger in a tupperware box and ferrying it to the NHM is more unusual Grin.

NastyCats · 16/11/2018 12:25

PanicwiththeBisto - love the Harvester Harvest Mouse!

I can see a new MN recipe book on the horizon, too...
