My kids' dad fed them badger

I'm not joking. We are separated and he sees them for the day once every few weeks. Last week he took them for the day in London and when I picked them up they told me, very casually, that Daddy had given them badger with rice for lunch. He had sent me a picture a few days earlier of a dead badger so it is totally plausible, and given that he has been homeless for the last couple of years and often 'lives off the land' I am certain he would not think twice about eating a badger. He told the kids that he steamed the meat for 4hrs but now i'm really worried about the whole TB thing. They seem fine but not sure if I should get them checked out. Any words of wisdom?

The Wild Meat company doesn't do badger, but you can choose your squirrel oven ready or in fur, or in fur suitable for taxidermy.

Oven ready, plastic free squirrel? WTAF?
If it's "Wild Meat", do they go to parks and shoot the squirrels? Or do they raise them in captivity? Hmm

My Mum once cooked a pheasant that our cat brought in through the cat flap, and I've I've also had Roe deer roadkill courtesy of my Grandfather, medical types seem happy to tackle amatuer butchery!

I'm sure Badgers are protected animals!

Is this in Classics?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 24/11/2018 17:25

After much badgering from MNers, we have agreed to move this over to Classics.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 24/11/2018 19:56

Glad to hear that it met the high standards sett by MNHQ.

DH's mate found a dead deer which he hung outside his door for a week or so and then took a chainsaw to it. Said it was v good eating. I was a bit annoyed that dh turned down the offer of some for us, but he hates venison and I love it.

DD had a soft toy called Roadkill when she was a toddler.

Great decision to move this thread over to Classics, it's given me a much needed chuckle whenever there's been an update. Grin

DD had a soft toy called Roadkill when she was a toddler. My son still has his (he's 21 now), it's a soft dog whose stomach kind of undoes (Velcro strips) and can be flattened out. He was immediately christened Roadkill Grin

Someone warn the OP's ex!

DBN1, great minds! DD is 19, and still has hers but hers is a bunny pencil case with a zip. MIL kept trying to rechristen it, probably inadvertently ensuring the name stuck!

Late to this party, but...we just had a similar discussion on a facebook page about eating road kill deer in a foragers forum. The women was driving behind a car that killed the deer, it's winter so she knew it was cold and fresh. She went back to fetch it with some friends and a truck to have it processed. So as others said if he knew it was fresh, it's probably okay! Maybe BBQ Badger is slightly more tasty?Confused....see below article!

My brother in law once ran over some rabbits and then his neighbour skinned them and served them to me for lunch. Told me it was pork Confused I didn't eat it tho

RosemarysBush · 14/01/2019 09:16

We would regularly make an outdoor oven at scout camp and cook a full roast pork dinner 😋. Not difficult, just takes a bit of time. Not sure about badger though.

I stumbled across this thread and couldn't resist responding with a poem:

It’s one thing living off the land
but I cannot equate
being on the road
with eating roadkill off your plate

Badger with or without rice
is surely a mistake
What next? Minced mouse with mushrooms
and a side order of snake?

Deconstructed rodent
does not amuse my bouche
Soup made from marsupials?
Distasteful and uncouth

It seems your ex has bitten off
far more than he can chew
So next time when he has the kids
download Deliveroo!

4 hours seems like ever such a long time to steam the badger for, unless it started out thinking it was relaxing in a sauna.

🤣 this is the one for me 🤣
