Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

That song by Jamie "I wasn't expecting that"....

Also "hero" by family of the year (from the "boyhood" movie)

Also "at my most beautiful" by REM, as mentioned above

meanapparently · 15/01/2018 20:08

Feel by Robbie

Come and hold my hand
I wanna contact the living
Not sure I understand
This role I've been given
I sit and talk to God
And he just laughs at my plans
My head speaks a language
I don't understand

I just understand these lyrics sadly.

tentative3 · 15/01/2018 20:09

God loads. Some that don't have meaning to me (also a fan of Emotionless by Good Charlotte but no specific emotional reason. The whole album actually). Some that do. I do love a weep at some emotional lyrics and don't pretend to have sophisticated tastes in music.

Jealous, Labyrinth.
We Are Young, Fun
You Ruined Me, The Veronicas (I know, I know). Specifically the line 'and in the end I hope she was worth it'
Say Something, Great Big World

teenybean · 15/01/2018 20:11

'Everybody hurts' by R.E.M, it was the song i chose to have played at my Mum's funeral,
'Wasn't expecting that' by Jamie lawson, my mum died of cancer & when he sings that 'it's come back again, I wasn't expecting that' It breaks me, every. Single. Time 😔

LookImAHooman · 15/01/2018 20:11

10things that Jamie song can fuck right off. The first time I heard it I thought what a lovely, light, happy sentiment it was, and then - NO. NO. I was a bit narked.

LookImAHooman · 15/01/2018 20:12

teeny I’m sorry about your Mum Flowers

Family Portrait by Pink

Makes me think how my son must think about me and my ex wife. Can't listen to it any more, it just makes me feel gut wrenchingly guilty that I didn't do more to protect him from the impact.

chinam · 15/01/2018 20:16

So many fabulous songs have already been mentioned.
Miss you like crazy - Natalie Cole. It always makes me think of my lovely Dad.
Ordinary man -Christy Moore. You can feel the pain in his voice.
Pretty much anything by BellX1. Paul Noonan's voice is sublime.

StillMissV · 15/01/2018 20:16

Great thread!

Drops of Jupiter by Train every time -

But tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?
And tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the milky way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 20:18

Also, I'm sorry to mention this one but Let It Go, from Frozen gets me every time because it takes me back to the time when I was fortunate enough to come into a little windfall, that meant I could finally take my DC to Disney in Florida, even though they were actually grown ups by then. I had promised them I would take them if I ever could, throughout their childhoods. I left their EA father, years ago but he continued to make their younger years miserable and unhappy and when the time came that I was finally able to keep my promise and they played that song before the firework show, whilst projecting it onto the castle at night. As I thought about how far we had come, I broke Sad still gets to me every time now

A Million Years Ago - Adele

A song about looking back, the choices made and regrets about changing and moving away.

A song you'd expect an older person to sing, but an extraordinary song for someone as young as her.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 15/01/2018 20:23

Heal your Pain, by George Michael. It helped me through the pain of an awful divorce. Here are a few lines, but the whole song resonates in my heart.

Who needs a lover
That can't be a friend
Something tells me I'm the one you've been looking for
Oh, if you ever should see him again
Won't you tell him you've found someone who gives you more
Someone who will protect you
Love and respect you
All those things
That he never could bring to you
Like I do
Or rather I would
Won't you show me your heart
Like you should

PortiaCastis · 15/01/2018 20:24

Dance with my Father. Luther Vandross

Reminds me of my lovely Dad who died when I was 20 and I still miss him.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/01/2018 20:30

Barenaked ladies-what a good boy

I go to school, I write exams,
if I pass, if I fail, if I drop out,
does anyone give a damn?
And if they do, they'll soon forget 'cause it won't take much for me
to show my life ain't over yet.
I wake up scared, I wake up strange.
I wake up wondering if anything in my life is ever going to change.
I wake up scared, I wake up strange
and everything around me stays the

Barenaked ladies.. War on drugs.
Majority of the song but especially..

Hard to admit I fought the war on drugs
My hands were tied and the phone was bugged
Another died and the world just shrugged it off

And coldplay..definitely Fix you and The Scientist.. But do love Us against the World

And if we could float away
Fly up to the surface and just start again
..... Through chaos as it swirls
It's us against the world

alifemoreorlessordinary · 15/01/2018 20:31

"i'll keep a part of you with me, and everywhere I go, there you'll be"
Leanne Ryhmes?
Sorry, got something in my eye...

RedRosie · 15/01/2018 20:33

Sorry for everyone's losses. Flowers

A mixtape (remember those oldies?) of this lot would have us all prostrate with melancholy.

Mine is Warren Zevon 'Keep me in your heart'

"If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less,
Keep me in your heart for awhile"

I can't even listen to it!

Sierra259 · 15/01/2018 20:34

I can't make you love me - George Michael

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 20:35

Portia, yes, me too and also The Living Years, Mike and the Mechanics also chokes me.

Some already said Run, Leona Lewis, the lines which get me are:
Light up, light up, as if you have a choice, even if you cannot hear my voice, I'll be right beside you dear. Choked even writing that Sad loved it until I lost my dad and cannot listen to it even now

'Out of sorrow entire worlds have been built
Out of longing great wonders have been willed'

God that Nick Cave is a poet.
(Are You The One That I've Been Waiting For?)

nong45 · 15/01/2018 20:36

Cat Stevens - How Can I Tell You

StealthPolarBear · 15/01/2018 20:39

In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 20:40

Most songs by Celine Dion get me too, especially Because You Loved Me, All coming back to me now, The Reason and Oh Holy Night.

Now have something in my eyes too

This is going to sound terribly self absorbed, self pitying and trite but it made sense at the time.

When I was getting divorced and living in the family home by myself, every time I came into an empty house and turned the telly on, Friends always seemed to be starting.

I changed the words and sang "I'll be there for me cause no one else will..."

Like I said, self pity city but I often still sing it without thinking!

AntsDeck · 15/01/2018 20:41

Aww Hector Thanks
