Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

Say Something. I've had to walk away from two people I loved desperately, but they no longer loved me, just weren't willing to be seen to be the bad guy. Both broke my heart (and still do)

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
Anywhere I would have followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all

And I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Anywhere I would have followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
And anywhere I would have followed you (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
Say something, I'm giving up on you

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something...

"And when i see the sign that points one way, the lot we used to pass by every day" from Just Walk Away Renee, by The Four Tops. Such a hauntingly beautiful melody with those lyrics.....gets me every time.

REM Everbody Hurts. In my early twenties I gave a lift to a student (who lived in the same village) to college everyday as I worked in the same town.
This was on the radio one morning and he said he thought the words were perfect and he would want them at his funeral. He subsequently joined the army and was killed overseas and I cannot hear this song without thinking of him.

Thierryhenryneedisaymore · 17/01/2018 23:43

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Tears in Heaven is unbearable. Also agree with Take This Waltz. There's a song from Schubert's Winterreise called Das(?) Lindenbaum which always gets me; the words are about revisiting a place of refuge and realising it can no longer offer that shelter. Sad But if you really want to cry into your Guinness nothing can beat Danny Boy.

Dumbled · 18/01/2018 02:13

"Shake it out" by Florence at the machine. I think its a beautiful song but the lyrics remind me of a painful time of my life and makes me feel unbearable sadnes (though apparently its only about having a hangover!)

user764329056 · 18/01/2018 03:17

Bridge Over Troubled Water gets me every time, there is such tenderness in the voices of Simon and Garfunkel

Also Ripples and Squonk by Genesis

Logical Song and Don’t Leave Me Now by Supertramp

Farewell Is A Lonely Sound Jimmy Ruffin

Someone Saved My Life Tonight and Tiny Dancer, Elton John

Kursk · 18/01/2018 03:57

I have many.
Tourniquet- Evenescence
Pins and needles- The Birthday Massacre
Until it sleeps- Metallica
Storm the Sorrow- Epica

Recent Favorite Every storm runs out of Rain

I saw you standing in the middle of the thunder and lightning
I know you're feeling like you just can't win, but you're trying
It's hard to keep on keepin' on, when you're being pushed around
Don't even know which way is up, you just keep spinning down, 'round, down
Every storm runs, runs out of rain
Just like every dark night turns into day
Every heartache will fade away
Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain
So hold your head up and tell yourself that there's something more
And walk out that door
Go find a new rose, don't be afraid of the thorns
'Cause we all have thorns
Just put your feet up to the edge, put your face in the wind
And when you fall back down, keep on rememberin'
Every storm runs, runs out of rain
Just like every dark night turns into day
Every heartache will fade away
Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain
It's gonna run out of pain
It's gonna run out of sting
It's gonna leave you alone
It's gonna set you free
Set you free
Every storm runs, runs out of rain
Just like every dark night turns into day
Every heartache will fade away
Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain
It's gonna set you free,
It's gonna run out of pain,
It's gonna set you free

I love this thread.

Funnily enough mine is the Katy Perry song- the ‘you’re going to hear me roar’. About being tough and being a fighter.

Was playing in the car as I finally drove my newborn home from hospital after she finished treatment for neonatal meningitis.

And ‘feels like home’- is how I feel about my DP.

Wonderful thread, although making me cry!

3littlerabbits · 18/01/2018 05:19

I didn’t know Say hello wave goodbye was softcell either!

10thingsIhateAboutTheDailyMail · 18/01/2018 07:23

Gallicoscat, if you are open to Schubert, listen to the Erlkonig....just the lyrics alone are a sledgehammer, about a father's love for his child who is dying in his arms. The music is great too

AntsDeck · 18/01/2018 08:01

Thank you everyone who has contributed to this thread - I now know so many more songs that also make my heart hurt.

Thanksto all of you who have had and still feel the pain.

How can we move it so we don't lose it?

Songbird by Fleetwood Mac (although I do like Eva Cassidy's version too). It's giving me goosebumps just thinking about it!

ZaZathecat · 18/01/2018 09:38

"Living without you takes a lot of getting used to.
I'll learn to live with it, but I don't want to", it's by Chicago (Hard Habit to Break?)

iamzzz · 18/01/2018 10:32

lastname I loved that Enigma song. Used to listen to them and The Cranberries at bedtime after my mum died when I was little.

Also Tears in Heaven kills me for the same reason.

American skin (41 shots) written by Bruce Springsteen in response to the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police officers who thought he was reaching for a gun when he was actually reaching for his wallet. 41 shots were fired, those words are repeated in the song 41 times.

DontDIY · 18/01/2018 11:38

Aw, Lastname, I’m grand, thank you. And I’m sorry! X

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 18/01/2018 11:44

ImaginingDragons · 18/01/2018 12:01

Numb - Linkin Park
Slipping Through My Fingers - Abba
Both about children growing up in different ways

ImaginingDragons · 18/01/2018 12:06

And 'The Greatest Discovery' by Elton John:

Peering out of tiny eyes
The grubby hands that gripped the rail
Wiped the window clean of frost
As the morning air laid on the latch

A whistle awakened someone there
Next door to the nursery just down the hall
A strange new sound you never heard before
A strange new sound that makes boys explore

Tread neat so small those little feet
Amid the morning his small heart beats
So much excitement yesterday
That must be rewarded must be displayed

Large hands lift him through the air
Excited eyes contain him there
The eyes of those he loves and knows
But what's this extra bed just here

His puzzled head tipped to one side
Amazement swims in those bright green eyes
Glancing down upon this thing
That make strange sounds, strange sounds that sing

In those silent happy seconds
That surround the sound of this event
A parent smile is made in moments
They have made for you a friend

And all you ever learned from them
Until you grew much older
Did not compare with when they said
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother
This is your brand new brother
