Because they are 'that good'? I realise different songs may affect people differently Smile

I have lots:

The last part of Do the right thing, Simply Red
The last part of Light my fire, Will Young
The whole of Sandstorm, Darude
The chorus of Love Love, Take That
The chorus of The Flood, Take That
The whole of Praying for time, George Michael
The whole of Sing Hallelujah, Dr Alban
The last chorus, to the end Confusion, ELO
The last bit, to fade, Rise, Gabrielle
All of Don't You, Simple Minds
All of Shine, Years and Years
All of Paradise by the dashboard light, Meatloaf
All of Home By The Sea, Genesis

Just off the top of my head Smile

Fleetwood Mac - landslide

I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'Til the landslide brought it down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older, too
Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older, too
Oh, I'm getting older, too

Coffeeandcrochet · 16/01/2018 20:05

And so it goes - Billy Joel
Who knows where the time goes? - Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention

Axlcat · 16/01/2018 20:10

Moments of Pleasure - Kate Bush. All of it but especially this:
“And I can hear my mother saying
"Every old sock meets an old shoe”

Nervousrex · 16/01/2018 20:10

An awful lot of mine have already been mentioned (I want "Old and Wise" at my funeral too), but also -

"Take Me to Church" by Hozier. Spine tingling stuff - the arrangement, the lyrics, just everything.
"Will you...?" by Hazel O'Connor - there's a whole four years of university's worth of yearning wrapped up in those lyrics.
"Amoureuse" by Kiki Dee - see above.

And "No Distance Left to Run" by Blur. Damon's voice when he sings the single word "Please..." - it goes right through me every time.

EastMidsGPs · 16/01/2018 20:13

Oh yes Nervousrex

The sax solo in Will You sets my spine all a tingle

am very fond of a sax solo

Tighnabruaich · 16/01/2018 20:19

Lady Grinning Soul by Bowie
Word On A Wing by Bowie
Coat of Many Colours by Dolly Parton
Baby Mine by Dumbo's mother
The Man That Got Away by Judy Garland
Stardust by Nat King Cole (going to have this at my funeral).
So many - music affects me really deeply and turns me into a big sloppy mess. Oh -
The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams.
One Fine Day from Madam Butterfly.
I'll stop now!!!

IthinkImislaid10years · 16/01/2018 20:23

Bob Dylan's Forever Young. I played it a lot when DS1 was a newborn and the love I felt for him was so intense it almost felt unbearable.

Another for Into my Arms Nick Cave.

battenbergbutterfly · 16/01/2018 20:26

Wake up Alone - Amy Winehouse, just beautiful

AntsDeck · 16/01/2018 21:12

I now have lots more songs on my IPod, some of which I have never heard of before, so thank you all Smile

Maybe a bit of a strange choice, but the one that always brings me to tears is Goodbye Dolly Gray, written well over 100 years ago and popularised during the First World War. Maybe I'm just weird Blush

BertieBotts · 16/01/2018 21:46

Lots! Lots. Music is extremely important to me. I can link a lot of songs to various times in my life. I'll try and pick some out which have the "heart hurt" feeling - I know exactly what you mean!

Gravel by Ani Difranco - oh I just have a thing for unhealthy relationships, that pull.

My Father's Eyes by Eric Clapton, the unplugged version - anything that mentions his son but Tears in Heaven is a bit overplayed and he just sounds so tired in this one.

Feathers and Down by the Cardigans

Coming Around Again by Carly Simon - oh!! Oh this.

And the description of everyday activities which just gets worse and worse until "You scream a lullaby" - such a brilliantly painful description of a failing relationship in the newborn days.

Tell Her This by Del Amitri

I Know You By Heart by Eva Cassidy: ^You left in Autumn. The leaves were turning." How the world freezes when you lose someone.

Good Enough by Evanescence

Hole in the Heart by Karine Polwart (but I think this is so powerful) - It's about breaking free of other's expectations, whatever form those may take.

PourMeAGlass · 16/01/2018 21:53

After reading this thread, I've just YouTubed Ed Sheerans 'Supermarket Flowers' and sobbed and sobbed and sobbed, such a beautifully sad song.

I lost my lovely Mum 2 years ago and I don't think, now I've heard the song, I'll ever forget the line 'You were an angel in the shape of my Mum' 😢

ActualAl · 16/01/2018 22:09

Loads of these songs have brought memories back, some good some not so much and so many have been mentioned that I would have suggested. Here's a Proclaimers one I love. It makes me think of my FIL who died shortly after our wedding and didn't meet my children;

"Now And Then"

Lately, I've been forgetting
To keep your memory Every day

It's so long
Since last time I saw you
And sometimes the present
Gets in the way

But now and then
You just walk right in
Ask me how it's been
Since you've been still
And if I cry
You just smile and sigh
I never said goodbye
I never will

Lately things have been so good
I with that you could
Be here to see
The beauty of all your grandchildren
By your children
Your legacy

But now and then
You just walk right in
Ask me how it's been
Since you've been still
And if I cry
You just smile and sigh
I never said goodbye
I never will

Lately, I've been forgetting
To keep your memory Every day

feska5 · 16/01/2018 22:10

The Beatles - In my life
Simply Red - For your babies
Bat King Cole - Smile

feska5 · 16/01/2018 22:15

Curtis Stigers - Don’t go far ❣️

MrsGrindah · 16/01/2018 22:25

I’m in bits here,!

DontDIY · 16/01/2018 22:31

The usual Coldplay ones.

The Scientist - from when I was 20 and chose my forever cheating ex over the one person who ever made me feel like maybe there was someone else I could love. And by the time I realised my mistake, it was too late he moved on, he changed, and despite trying again over many years, he just fucked me over and I feel it’s my karma.

Green Eyes - because that one person told me it made him think of me.

Loads more, but I was wallowing on the above tonight anyway Grin

SofaKing0101 · 16/01/2018 22:36

Nobody can save me - Chester Bennington Linkin Park

and everything else he sang

HolyShmoly · 16/01/2018 22:44

I'm going to come back and read the actual thread but LOADS.
Specific suggestions:
this exact version of Grace: Honestly, if the name Grace worked with our surname and this baby is a girl this would probably be her name. For other reasons, but also because I probably stick this on youtube at least once a week.
The Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice (actually a number of songs from that album, I remember being absolutely blown away as a teenager.)
I agree with a previous poster who mentioned Hozier, I love Take Me to Church but also In A Week.

My list has a very Irish lean to it I see! I'm sure there are tons more that I can't think of, but I love that heart-achey, neck shivery feeling that you get.

HolyShmoly · 16/01/2018 22:47

ActualAl I think you've broken me with those lyrics. I'd never heard that song but I started bawling after reading the first verse.

Nervousrex · 16/01/2018 23:30

@HolyShmoly - yes! I love In A Week too. It took me a few times of listening to it to really understand what the lyrics were saying, but when I did it was a real "ice cubes down the back" moment.

Also "Rainbow Eyes" by Rainbow. Time stops when I hear it.

cathycake · 16/01/2018 23:53

I lost my eldest son 2 years ago and find it very hard to listen to music. He had incredible songs at his funeral which I don't want to post here but I will tell you about an experience 3 months after he passed. It was the first time I left my home since he had passed on my own, without company and moral support.

Anyway as I got in the car and drove for a few miles the radio was switched off and I said out loud
"Ok I know your with me - I can't do this -- please just give me a sign"

I turned the radio on and a song started called "wherever you will go" by the Calling
I remember having to pull over and sobbing in a side street as the lyrics that hit me were

'And maybe, I'll find out
A way to make it back someday
To watch you, to guide you through the darkest of your days
If a great wave shall fall and fall upon us all
Then I hope there's someone out there who can bring me back to you
-------------

It's strange but at my darkest times I will often hear this play in the background somewhere and I feel he is telling me "it's ok mum, I'll see you again"

DontDIY · 16/01/2018 23:57

Beautiful song Cathy, and I’m so sorry for your loss Flowers

OwlDoll · 17/01/2018 00:10

John Denver's Annie's Song - "Let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms."
I never really listened to the words properly until recently when it came on the radio when I was driving and I got a flashback to my mother dying in hospital with my father's arms around her.

OwlDoll · 17/01/2018 00:19

Christy Moore's song The Voyage
"Life is an ocean, love is a boat
In troubled waters it keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you, and now gathered round us we have our own crew."
I've always loved this song. It used to make me think of my parents and siblings, now its reflects me and dh's time together.
