AIBU to want to talk to my 14yo about where this pill came from?

WorriedofMiltonKeynes · 19/04/2016 12:16

(Name changed) This morning, when doing my usual domestic goddess routine (I've, trying to shove as much crap from around the house into cupboards etc) I found a tablet under a cushion on a chair we have on the landing. Didn't look like it'd been deliberately hidden, at best, just almost dropped there so when I moved the cushion, I saw it.

Long story short, it seems like a street drug. It's roughly pressed, into a triangle and it's half pink, half white, with a triangle pattern on the white side. No drug number/company etc. Have checked on line and with pharmacist friend who doesn't recognise it either.
I have three kids, DS14, DS8 and DD5. The eldest is a good kid, doing well at school, sporty and engaged with school. Bit temperamental at home, sulky, messy, glued to phone... Nothing novel I would say.

Would like to talk to him about this pill, but AIBU? It certainly belongs to no one else in the house, but I have no evidence it belongs to him either (or without testing, that it really is MDMA or whatever). It doesn't seem to have been deliberately hidden, in fact, it's in a public place outside his sister's room - why do that if you're hiding something? So I do have doubts that it's his, but who else's, as he hasn't had friends around recently.

I don't want to be accusatory or confrontational but just ask calmly what, if anything, he can tell me. I want to give him every chance to come clean if necessary, but use it as a chance to talk about it, while also reminding him that his dad and I are in lines of work that regard drug use as a MASSIVE, pension losing deal.

I experimented with drugs at college and don't want to get preachy, but I feel it should be addressed. I thought I'd like to calmly talk about it, then throw in some contact numbers like Frank. Let him call if or when he wants to...whether or not he admits to it being his.

Am I being too weak? I feel that unless I have more evidence, I have to be careful not to alienate... Anyone have any experience of things such as this?

hairygodmother couldn't agree more. The sun's now out and life is better than it was two hours ago... And it's not because I may have ingested a class A drug. Blush

The most MN thing that's ever happened:

OP: I think I've found a street drug belonging to my teenager.
Forum: Lick it.
OP: I can't. I've just eaten lots of lemon and coriander humus.

heron98 · 19/04/2016 14:03

You can lick it even if it's a street drug and it won't kill you/make you high. It will just taste fucking horrible.

LikeTheShoes · 19/04/2016 14:10

Once, at school, the whole student body was called out of class and made to assemble in the gym to be interrogated about some pills which had been found in the library. The police were called and all the staff started calling us through one by one for individual interviews. It turned out that the pills were jumping beans

summerdreams · 19/04/2016 14:22

I'm so happy for you but even I thought it looked like a street drug! Grin funniest thread ever I would have said lick it as well.

tootyflooty · 19/04/2016 14:42

sorry, had to lol at this, reminds me of my little cousin, his mum found a spoon and powder in his school bag, it was his hay fever tablet, which he used to crush and mix with water on a tea spoon, we still laugh about this, he is 41 now, and still reminds his mum how she thought he was a crack head!!!, you must be mightily relieved, one to tell them when they are older

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 19/04/2016 14:48

Read this thread in an m&s cafe at lunchtime, surrounded by pensioners eating their scones.

Was trying not to Laugh out loud. Just lick it!

Great thread. Glad alls ok tho, and your son is just a mint addict Grin

TheSpottedZebra

National express do random drink and drugs test, and not just on drivers (you can't start a NE coach without doing a breath test) but on the staff who answer phones and sell you tickets.

BeccaMumsnet · 19/04/2016 15:23

Hi all - this thread has been nominated for Classics and we agree, it's an absolute cracker. We'll move it over to Classics now.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/04/2016 19:48

Oil industry workers are also drug tested

TheSpottedZebra · 19/04/2016 21:16

Nat Express too - that's actually nicely reassuring!
Oil workers? Is that due to the machinery used, or is there a drugs issue on the rigs?

sunnydayinmay · 19/04/2016 21:25

Lovely thread. Grin

sunnydayinmay · 19/04/2016 21:27

Particularly like touch that the hummus was from Waitrose.

NewYearNewToads · 19/04/2016 22:04

I just knew this would go into classics Grin

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 19/04/2016 22:36

I believe Network Rail staff are drug tested too.

Mner · 19/04/2016 22:50

Brilliant!

BitOutOfPractice · 19/04/2016 23:02

TheSpottedZebra yes they might be in control of very large areas of plant with hundreds of men working on it with their safety in their hands

Foxedme · 20/04/2016 13:05

Please talk to him. A couple of my daughters (lovely middle class) friends took AMT last year and it was a terrifying experience for everyone. Four ambulances needed and possible Cardiac arrests. These street drugs or legal highs are so dangerous. Please please talk to him. xxx

Foxedme · 20/04/2016 13:06

Omg I think I need to read rest of thread!!!

Sighing · 20/04/2016 13:13

You may be reassured to know train drivers AND track/ signal fitters/ testers (even some grades that design level crossing circuits etc) can be subjected to random drugs and sobriety tests!

Sighing · 20/04/2016 13:14

*not just neteork rail as thry employ only a small proportion of railway staff.

cantcookshouldntcook · 20/04/2016 13:27

It deffo looks like a smint, and i think that the reason it was uneven and rough is because it had already been in somebody's mouth Shock

Whatamuckingfuddle · 20/04/2016 13:37

This has made my day, worth rtft for sure

bolleauxnouveau · 20/04/2016 13:43

Now do we need to have a little chat about your hummus habit?

OhSoggyBiscuit · 20/04/2016 13:58

Legal smint highs are very dangerous- first you get a fresh, minty taste, then the sky goes multicoloured and everybody seems to be neon coloured and grinning.
