Lions
Hope you were at In n Out wason

I wish - I wanted to go to the In N Out (nothing to do with the fact that the clerk called out "love your accent" last time I was there) but my colleague made us go to Fudrucker's cos he claims it's better (not much in it - but I prefer In n Out).

Thanks Giddy

Thought I'd missed another Bush there. Or a Clinton. Or a Reagan.

Lynnm63 · 22/03/2016 22:47

They'd both be POTUS surely as once you're President you keep the title.

I thought this was common sense and I can't stop laughing about the confusion with the bushes et al

Sprink · 22/03/2016 22:49

No. I'll reiterate. You really don't get to keep the title. The title stays with the office.

You arent POTUS once you are gone, but you are always still referred to as President Whatever, until you die. All ex-presidents are.
So yes and no.

lostincumbria · 22/03/2016 22:51

Bill couldn't be First Gentleman after what he did with Monica from Friends.

lorelei9 · 22/03/2016 22:51

Bill will be FMOTUS I guess
No seriously, I reckon they'll change it to White House Companion or some such. But I do hope Bill gets to be First Lady.

Lynnm63 · 22/03/2016 22:52

Don't they still get called Mr President even after they left office? Weren't there four ex presidents at Reagans funeral?

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2016 22:52

Bill has said that he wants to draw on Scottish heritage and be called First Laddie. Smile

I loved Quincy - he was soooo smart.

I clicked on a listicle a few weeks ago rating the intelligence of US presidents. Quincy was first. Thomas Jefferson was second and I think Bill was third.

This is going waaaaaay back in the thread, but Nancy I would say Obama IS a popular president. There are an awful lot of Democrats who would happily vote him in again if they could and there are plenty of Republicans who would rather vote for Obama than Trump. And this is from states all over, not just the more liberal ones. Obviously, probably not Texas and not reported in the Daily Mail.

Lynnm63 · 22/03/2016 22:53

Do you think Bill will wear the infamous blue dress if he becomes First Lady?

RustyBear · 22/03/2016 22:53

Re UK dynasties, PM Pitt the Elder was the father of PM Pitt the Younger, and PM George Grenville was the father of PM William Grenville. Oh, and George Grenville's sister was Pitt the Younger's mother.

Also Margaret Thatcher and John Major are apparently fifth cousins...

IamtheZombie · 22/03/2016 22:53

Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy were the 4 presidents assassinated while in office.

Owllady · 22/03/2016 22:55

Was Pitt the elder, brad Pitts dad?

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2016 22:56

No. I'll reiterate. You really don't get to keep the title. The title stays with the office.

Former presidents are referred to as "President" by courtesy. It's a courtesy title. When addressing one, though, you would say President Carter, not Mr. President.

lorelei9 · 22/03/2016 22:58

Owl, no, Pitt the younger was Brad's dad.

Lynn, what blue dress? I'm sure bill can carry off a blue dress but not in the bold style michelle favours, he needs something more subtle.

lorelei9 · 22/03/2016 23:00

Seneca "I clicked on a listicle a few weeks ago "

Sorry to hear that. How are you now?

Sprink · 22/03/2016 23:00

Don't they still get called Mr President even after they left office? Weren't there four ex presidents at Reagans funeral?

They are still referred to in the media as (eg) President Clinton or Former President Clinton, but thisnisnnot correct. It's an identifier, for clarity, but they are not addressed that way.

Also, I mis-spoke earlier in saying they get to be addressed by their former post when they leave the office of President. This is true if the former post has/had many others in that position (Eisenhower reverted to General, Obama will revert to Senator) but it's not done if the former post has a single person filling the role. So Bill Clinton is not Givernor Clinton either, he's simply Mr Clinton and addressed (in writing) or introduced (in person) as the Honourable Bill Clinton.

I realise this is tedious for many of you. Apologies, it's right up my street. Wink

Bill has to be careful with dresses, there was one that almost caused his downfall

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2016 23:01

Obama is fairly popular now. Actually, he has become more popular as he increasingly follows his best instincts, liberated by the need to be re-elected. The rapprochement with Cuba is a good example.
