This is true. I'm writing about the protocol. No one would send an invitation to "President Clinton"

You'd be surprised. I'd guess that since the West Wing episode where all the expresidents are referred to as President, and now that the media uses the same terms, I would say that many people would use it in that way.
It might be wrong in terms of strict protocol, but the more people use it, the more it will be used, and eventually it will be the new protocol.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 22/03/2016 23:29

Ah you can just imagine Thanksgiving dinner at the Bush Homestead.
Would you like to carve President Bush?
Why thank you yes I would, President Bush. White or brown meat Former First Lady Bush? And Former First Lady Bush?
How about you Governor Bush?

LineyReborn · 22/03/2016 23:39

Consort.

Bill Clinton would be Senior Consort Resident of the United States or SCROTUS.

SilverBirchWithout · 22/03/2016 23:41

This thread is scary.

Mind you recently someone asked me whether UKIP were the party that wanted to stay in the EU.

I do wonder whether people should have to complete a short test before they are permitted to vote.

Jeez Shock

RudeElf · 22/03/2016 23:43

Shock Bold Liney! Grin

Lynnm63 · 22/03/2016 23:44

PMSL at SCROTUS. I'm so grown up not

Sprink · 22/03/2016 23:48

protocol, but the more people use it, the more it will be used, and eventually it will be the new protocol.

Possibly, but I hope not. Putting aside all the sometimes silliness of protocol, it's disrespectful to the office to have too many of these presidents running about.

What next? The OED saying 'literally' can also mean 'figuratively'...?

Oh, wait. Angry

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2016 23:49

Sprink I think formal protocol is that former presidents are formally addressed as Mr/Ms. Eisenhower had the right to be addressed as General because military protocol is that retired military are addressed by their rank at retirement. President Obama could be addressed as Senator because he was one and it is not a unique office, but formal protocol would be Mr.

Sprink · 22/03/2016 23:49

How about you Governor Bush?

Giddy that deserves a Grin

Sprink · 22/03/2016 23:57

Seneca I think that's what I said?

The Honourable comes in only in correspondence, possibly. Or possibly when being announced at a ball.

If Hillary is elected (and the Secrert Service passes on the singularly spectacular suggestion of SCROTUS), I do wonder what they'll use.

FGOTUS makes sense but is awkward to say. Just GOTUS sounds too much like POTUS and might not carry clearly through their secret wrist transmitters. It's a quandary all right.

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 00:09

Sorry, if I misunderstood, Sprink.

Wives of governors are also called First Lady in the US and some of the husbands of governors are called First Gentleman so there is some precedent for that.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 23/03/2016 00:16

I'm a bit surprised at anyone over roughly 20 not knowing US presidents can only stand for 2 terms. It gets mentioned frequently during every presidential election.

IamtheZombie · 23/03/2016 00:29

Liney, Zombie has reported your post at 23:39:58.

She has insisted that:

Consort.

Bill Clinton would be Senior Consort Resident of the United States or SCROTUS.

be Quote of the Week.

SenecaFalls · 23/03/2016 00:45

If Trump is the Republican nominee (likely) and loses to Clinton (likely) AND as a result of his nomination the Democrats regain the House and Senate (people are starting to contemplate this as vaguely likely) then will they make Obama a Supreme Court justice?

They could (and it would only take the president and the senate to do it). There is precedent. William Howard Taft served as president and later as Chief Justice of the United States.

mummytime · 23/03/2016 06:32

SilverBirch if people have to do a test before they can vote then all politicians have to do a Maths test to prove they know things like: more than 50% of the population cannot be "above average" etc.

CosyNook · 23/03/2016 07:11

quencher - Yes, and there is a third bush, jet bush

It's Jeb Bush

My teenagers know there were 2 Bushes and the difference between the Clintons.

However, I do remember a schoolgate mum who didn't know who the British PM was at the time Shock

SurferJet · 23/03/2016 07:22

Who on this thread think the two Bushes & the two Clintons are the same people?
I thought it was a joke?

I thought Nancy was the best First Lady though - just so lovely.

Littlecaf · 23/03/2016 07:39

My DP didn't know what the GOP was. (And he's really not stupid).

derxa · 23/03/2016 07:59

I thought Nancy was the best First Lady though - just so lovely.
Yes lovely Hmm

Gazelda · 23/03/2016 08:04

Wasn't Nancy somehow involved in the Grange Hill 'Just Say No' thing?

CosyNook · 23/03/2016 08:08

Littlecaf

Are you going to explain what GOP is for those that don't know?

AwakeCantSleep · 23/03/2016 08:33

mummytime but 50% of the population can be greater (or less) than the average. You are confusing average (mean) with the median.

In fact, income distributions are often highly skewed, with the median much lower than the mean, hence more than 50% of the population having less than average earnings.

www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/us-news-blog/2012/jun/14/game-of-thrones-george-w-bush-head Next up, someone's going to come in and say they saw Dubya's head on a spike outside the US Houses of Parliament...

Brummiegirl15 · 23/03/2016 08:38

Ooh I know that GOP is Grand Old Party and refers to the Repulicans

I've just read the thread but I'm Shock at some of the ignorance on here!

TheDowagerCuntess · 23/03/2016 08:48

Grin Just when you think this thread can't get any more entertaining ... Jet Bush makes an appearance.
