AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

yorkshapudding · 02/08/2015 16:51

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

I'm just gobsmacked at the brass neck of the ndn Shock

Who does that?

TheReluctantCountess · 04/08/2015 11:03

Have the builders come back today?

AgathaChristie01 · 04/08/2015 11:06

Loving the image of monkeys on bicycles, and all that weeping in the bushes.
Definitely YANBU and am so glad all the other neighbours refused this 'request'.
Cheeky doesn't even begin to describe your neighbours. We had ones who always took themselves off on a break, without a word, when getting extremely noisy, dirty work done, on their house. Leaving everyone else on the street to endure it, and they all but rebuilt the bloody house, so there was a lot of work. Not to mention weeks on end of vans parked everywhere, skips and all the rest.

But, woe betide anyone else getting a small bit of work done, she would be out like a demon, complaining about it. B1tch. We should have had a street party when they left! Complete with cycling monkeys. Grin

Cant believe the cheek!

also placemarking

Skiptonlass · 04/08/2015 11:14

Bizarre... and could have been so easily dealt with by them

Check with you first re plans and plants
Leave YOU a key to THEIR house
Ask you nicely to lock up of an evening or just get the builders to give you the key overnight
Bring you back a nice bottle of wine or a gift from the trip...

Place marking to see how this pans out. :)

RandomFriend · 04/08/2015 11:14

Doesn't look like they've done much to be honest, despite the racket they were making. That can happen when there is noone to supervise. NDN is being ridiculous to not be around when paying for building work.

mrsg1888 · 04/08/2015 11:51

Grin Some hilarious posts so far, but over all I can't understand how people can be so brazen!! My NDNs would never dare intrude like that

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 04/08/2015 11:58

So they won't let the builders in their own home because they don't trust them but they wanted their other neighbour, an"elderly woman on her own," to have these apparently untrustworthy men traipsing through her house?

It's bad enough that they asked you but that just adds an extra level of thoughtlessness and selfishness.

Jo4040 · 04/08/2015 12:06

Goodness me!! Has the work started yet?

acatcalledjohn · 04/08/2015 12:30

Am desperate for the next instalment of the weeping bicycle monkeys circus saga Grin

I wonder if the lack of leccie has put them off from returning today. And as much as your NDNs are brass-necked and left the builders in the lurch, they are also rather cheeky by knocking on doors further down the road. What the fuck did they expect?

Jo4040 · 04/08/2015 12:32

Woooops. Sorry didn't read all the thread Blush How bloody annoying of me Angry

sadwidow28 · 04/08/2015 12:49

Called into the thread for today's update. Sad to see we haven't got a blow-by-blow account of today's shenanigans.

Every time I think about weeping in a bush on a bicycle I break out in laughter. That really was a classic.

iwouldgoouttonight · 04/08/2015 12:51

We've actually got people coming to do some work in our garden next week. I'm just checking I have everything in place for them:

  • Access to our house and garden (will need to pop out but will leave them with a key, electricity and toilet/coffee facilities).
  • We've let the neighbours know they're coming but that they shouldn't need to access their gardens.
  • Bicycles for workmen (obviously).
  • We have a bush in the front for them to weep into but its a berberis so very prickly. This will probably make them weep more.
  • Monkeys - this is where I'm struggling. I have no access to monkeys. Do you think this matters? Will the workmen spend the day slagging me off for not providing monkeys and then wee into my berberis?
PestoSwimissimos · 04/08/2015 12:52

What's going on today there Yorksha ? Did they bother turning up to work? Grin

but I haven't got a stitch to wear did all your clothes get ripped when you were weeping into the bereris

prettybird · 04/08/2015 13:23

I'm so looking forward to the latest instalment of the weeping bicycle monkeys saga (does anyone else have visions of the Wicked Witch of the North from the Wizard of Oz? Wink)

Shameless place mark Wink

Inforabumpyride · 04/08/2015 13:34

Are the neighbours back today ?

PeterParkerSays · 04/08/2015 13:36

You just know that whoever says yes to the power supply would also be unwittingly responsible for the builders cutting the plants back too harshly and for not checking on the gradient of the new patio in the owners' absence.

It's a shame that ND but one said no, I'd be intrigued to see how they got the power cable into the garden where the work being done across two other gardens.

QueenOfThorns · 04/08/2015 13:43

No update yet, OP?

This thread has everything (apart from yoni massage and an elderly Korean woman, but there's still time Grin) - it even made me chortle at stupid o'clock this morning when DD decided it was time to get up.

scribblegirl · 04/08/2015 13:46

Queen Thank you SO much for reminding me of EKL!

OP this is a great thread. Quite the lunch hour entertainment. I take my tea break at about 4 - if you could possibly update before then I would be most appreciative Wink

GarlicDoughballsInGlitter · 04/08/2015 13:54

Really want to hear what the neighbours say when they get back!

Stratter5 · 04/08/2015 13:58

Make sure you get the nice side of the fence, posts are supposed to be on owners side.

Crying at 'NO WEEPING BICYCLE MONKEYS', I need a sign saying that by my front door.

grenedeer · 04/08/2015 13:58

Well done for saying no, I lack confidence and people like your neighbours try to take advantage of this.

Also - the weeping bicycle monkeys, has anyone else notice they weren't offered the use of a loo, they were ordered to use it. Perhaps this explains the weeping, maybe they weren't ready? Smile

I haven't got a stitch to wear because those blubbering bicycle baboons ran off with everything.
