AIBU re this odd request from neighbours?

Our NDN's came over to tell us that they are having some work done in their back garden starting tomorrow- having a fence built, some trees cut down, rubbish cleared etc. They estimate it will be about two full days work, possibly more. They then told us that they were going away and would not be back until after the job has finished. They explained that they don't want to leave the workmen a key for "security reasons" so this means they will have no power source to plug tools in, no access to a bathroom or kettle etc. so would we be in and if so would we mind 'helping out' with those things.

I explained that DH will be at work and while I am actually off work for the next couple of days, I will have various errands, things to do, want to take DC out etc. so will be in and out of the house. They then asked when I was planning on going out so they could let their workmen know and saying "oh don't worry, they'll work around you". I told them that I hadn't made firm plans and didn't know when I would be going out. To be honest I don't really want to be tied to a schedule and I also don't like the idea of three strange men traipsing around my house for two days. I told them that I was sorry but they needed to either provide them with a key or arrange for the work to be done at a time when they would be home as we couldn't be on hand for two days to provide cups of tea, electricity and access to bathroom facilities etc.

Although they were polite, I got the distinct feeling that NDN's thought I was being mean and not very neighbourly.

AIBU or is it a bit much to expect me to accommodate all this? Initially I thought they were being cheeky (they don't want to leave these men a key but I should just open my house up to them!) and that it was a bit of a strange request but due to their reaction (they seemed quite surprised that I said no) I'm now doubting myself. They are generally quite annoying neighbours, nothing too awful just a bit noisy and inconsiderate at times, so I don't trust myself to be objective!

MissDemelzaCarne · 04/08/2015 16:43

Back from work and there's no news. Sad

yorkshapudding · 04/08/2015 17:17

So sorry everyone, there was a a bit of a crisis at work so I had to go in today Sad. I left at 7am so no sign of builders at that time obviously. Have just got back and the other neighbour (elderly lady I told you about earlier, likes a gossip) accosted me before I'd even managed to exit my car, she couldn't wait to tell me that the builders never arrived til 10.30am and have spent most of the day lying on the grass, chatting Grin. She was also most concerned that they haven't left all day "to do a toilet" so must be going somewhere on site. Have checked my garden and, thankfully, it is free from any suspicious 'downloads' (my new favourite poo euphemism, thanks to this thread) so either they are holding it in or NDN's are in for a nice surprise. Neighbour also told me that they knocked on my door earlier so don't know what that was about. I think she's as worked up about all this as you lot are, she seems to have spent all day monitoring their every move!

The fence isn't finished and is still a safe distance from my plant, which I have cut back to the boundary on pp's advice. I believe NDN's are due back tomorrow but I have no idea what time. I'm at work tomorrow anyway so won't be around to stand guard over the aforementioned plant, clear up stray banana skins etc. but I'm sure my neighbour will have a full report for me when I get home!

yorksha just so we don't have to wait all day tomorrow I would like to suggest that you either ring in sick, or get your next door but one neighbour on here to keep us posted.

NDNs are coming home tomorrow expecting to see fully completed work I'd bed my bicycle riding monkey on it !!! Grin They're gonna be raging when they have to endure the builders and plug stuff in for them for the rest of the week GrinGrinGrin

LIZS · 04/08/2015 17:26

We need a live builder webcam in your absence! Hope ndns come home to find job half done and are billed for the delays.

londonrach · 04/08/2015 17:31

Grin

shamelessly marks place for NDN return

Marmitelover55 · 04/08/2015 17:37

Also feeling a bit guilty that our builders used our NDN's electricity for power tools last year when our leccie was off...

yorkshapudding · 04/08/2015 17:40

Marmite, if you didn't have any leccy that's a bit different. In that situation I probably would have said yes. My NDN's have leccy, they'd just rather use everyone else's. Also, did you also expect them to provide refreshment and a place to 'download'? I suspect not.

OP posts:
Marmitelover55 · 04/08/2015 17:47

No - they definitely downloaded at ours. Thankfully they seemed well house-trained and very keen to use the toilet duck after "going" Grin

TheReluctantCountess · 04/08/2015 17:57

So your neighbour will be paying for them sunbathing. Serves them right.

PegsPigs · 04/08/2015 18:02

Looking forward to tomorrow's instalment of "Cheeky Neighbours from Hell"

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/08/2015 18:04

OP, can I THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for this thread.
Also, whoever it was whose autocorrect came up with weeping bicycle monkeys. (although 'doing a toilet' is also great)
I've had an awful, shitty few weeks
I have not cracked a smile hardly in all that time
But this made me laugh out loud. It actually made me cry, this time in a good way.
Thankyou ;-)

DH hired two men to knock down a dividing wall in the basement of his shop about 15 years ago.

He was very excited about his first business venture and was so nice to them. He bought them lunch for the days they were there and let them get on with it while busying himself with his own tasks.

When they finished, aside from paying them, he gave them a really nice shirt each as a thank you.

In less than a week the shop was infested with enormous flies.

The fuckers had 'downloaded' in a corner of the basement as a sick joke against him.

He was so hurt. Actually embarrassed, like a child victim of bullying. I wanted to hunt them down and kill them.

What kind of arseholes do that?
