What would your father do if you were kidnapped by Parisian sex traffickers?

I'm watching Liam Neeson in Taken as he kicks, wallops and murders his way across Paris in pursuit of his abducted daughter? It's made me wonder what my father would do if such a situation arose.

He's an ex-accountant with a dodgy hip so I'm not sure he'd follow the Neeson method of daughter retrieval. He'd be more likely to start the rescue by putting the kettle on, having a cup of tea and checking the weather forecast in Paris. Then he'd have to phone the 67 relatives to inform them of my perilous situation. By the time he got off the phone to my Auntie Mary my virtue would be long lost.

What would your dear old dad do?

My Dad would group together all the other dementia patients in the care home,he'd have packed his bag,as it's always packed & ready to go.He'd know the code for the security door(they keep having to change it,as he craftily looks over shoulders to find it out!!)They would get on the next passing bus & probably end up in a pub in Wales, forgetting what they broke out for in the first place Grin

Write some extremely strongly worded letters. His "snottagrams" are the terror of underperforming service providers throughout Herefordshire.

Back in the day he might have been able to call in very useful international contacts from work who I suspect would have got the job done more efficiently and less messily than Liam.

My dad would round up his biking buddies and they would make an impressive attempt at looking the part, leathers and all that. They'd get through the tunnel then remember they are all now in their 60s and neither them or their bikes are as capable as they once were. Dad would have to stop for a pee and a fag every 30 miles, and find someone to refill his flask. He'd get angry in Paris, it would be too busy and he'd get lost but not actually admit it. He'd have forgotten to top up his 11 year old brick that probably doesn't even have my number in it anyway.

However, I'm fully confident once he found me he'd kick ass. As long as his hi holds up.

Stealthpolarbear · 16/05/2015 08:09

chickens that would make a good film

CheerfulYank · 16/05/2015 08:11

Yes it would! I'd watch it. Contact a script writer forthwith, Chickens!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 16/05/2015 08:12

My dad would try to negotiate some money from the kidnappers

Also got a dead dad

But 30 years ago when I'm 15/16 and still at home he'd have called a few people who 'owed' him and gone over.

Unfortunately he was a bit of a loud, aggressive arsehole so they'd have heard him coming from miles away.

chickensaresafehere · 16/05/2015 08:16

It would be a fantastic comedy, but my Dad would have to have the starring role with his sidekick Gladys, who would distract people with endless questions about their hair & what the trees are doing today Grin

chillychicken · 16/05/2015 08:19

During the week Dad might make a few phone calls and use it as an excuse to have a few days off work. At the weekend he'd be mightily pissed off that it had interrupted his hobby time (he plays with trains). He'd totally just put his faith in the police though. He wouldn't leave home, just incase I called.

dwinnol · 16/05/2015 08:20

My dad would have asked me what the pension is like and was it a job for life? But not to forget that he could still get me a job in the with the council which was definitely a job for life.

Hoppinggreen · 16/05/2015 08:22

Some of these would make much better films than Taken.
My arsehole of a father would have told the kidnappers that they wouldn't get much for me as I wasn't worth anything but if they did he wanted a cut!!!
He would then create elaborate lies to show what a total hero he was ( narc)

NutterlyButterly · 16/05/2015 08:25

My dad would probably not even notice I was gone if I am being honest.

tsonlyme · 16/05/2015 08:28

Great thread!

My dad died 18yrs ago, he was a ginger violinist so I doubt he'd have been much use in a kidnap situation. Then again, I wasn't a 17yr old virgin & I was way more street wise than any of my family so I expect I would have rescued myself.

nooyearnooname · 16/05/2015 08:43

No dad here so I asked DH what his would do. Upon first being informed of said kidnap, FILs response would be 'Oh bloody hell what have you gone and got yerself kidnapped for?'. Then he would check his shift pattern for the week to see if he could fit a rescue in or not. Then ask MIL what to do.

listsandbudgets · 16/05/2015 09:10

Not sure my dad would even notice I'd gone. I havent' seen him since August - he didn't even bother with Christmas when I tried to organise something.

SuffolkNWhat · 16/05/2015 09:12

My Dad would call in a few favours from his 'contacts'

I'd soon be tracked down and returned home.

Thistledew · 16/05/2015 09:23

My dad in his prime would have heard the kidnappers speaking a few words in their native language, and would have understood what they were saying and where they were taking me. He probably would have been to that place wherever it was in the world at some point in his life, or he has read about it in a book, so would know where they were hiding. He would be able to call up old connections in British Embassies around the world, and would have been able to coordinate the rescue effort across several different countries and in several different languages. He would probably have leapt in a car and tracked me down, but I have no idea how he would have got on in an actual fight to rescue me. He did do a bit of boxing at school, but suffers from chronic nosebleeds so couldn't continue the training. He did get some weapons training whilst in the Navy in WWII, but may be better off with a torpedo than a machine gun. Being normally quite a quiet and passive sort, he would probably be one of those people who suddenly flip when angry and become utterly ruthless.

listsandbudgets · 16/05/2015 09:30

SIL dad on the other hand is believed (though not known for certain) to have been involved with the security services alongside a long career in the Irish guard. Later he worked with members of the house of lords. I imagine he'd call in a few favours if SIL was kidnapped. He's certainly not a man I'd like to anger Grin

RedCrayons · 16/05/2015 09:30

Mine would be totally Liam Neeson. Unless it was a Friday, which he can't do because he's got his swimming. Or Tuesday, because he's going to the darts with his mate. And come to think of it Mondays not great because mum will have the car.

He's more like to pay the ransom then make me pay it back 12p a week for the rest of my days. And I'd never hear the end of the 'why did you go to Paris without an E111?' All the way back.

LurcioAgain · 16/05/2015 09:35

Well these days he woudn't have to do anything. I'd give it three days of me without my HRT before the kidnappers kicked me out and pleaded with me not to come back, ever. Just as well 'cos he's now 76.

Back when I was a student, he'd probably have got on the phone to the principal of my college - prior to that job, she'd been deputy director of MI6 and was the woman Judy Dench's M was based on - except tougher (she'd never have let herself get emotionally involved leading to a lapse of judgement and getting herself kidnapped, like M did in The World is Not Enough).

TheTravellingLemon · 16/05/2015 09:36

For all my father knows, they could have got me many years ago!

BananaInPyjama · 16/05/2015 09:38

Mine would not have noticed.

AndHarry · 16/05/2015 09:38

My dad would call the police, then look after the DC while DH and DM went to Paris to besiege the British consulate.

My dad's rescued me a number of times from dodgy situations at home and abroad so takes it all in his stride!
