What would your father do if you were kidnapped by Parisian sex traffickers?

I'm watching Liam Neeson in Taken as he kicks, wallops and murders his way across Paris in pursuit of his abducted daughter? It's made me wonder what my father would do if such a situation arose.

He's an ex-accountant with a dodgy hip so I'm not sure he'd follow the Neeson method of daughter retrieval. He'd be more likely to start the rescue by putting the kettle on, having a cup of tea and checking the weather forecast in Paris. Then he'd have to phone the 67 relatives to inform them of my perilous situation. By the time he got off the phone to my Auntie Mary my virtue would be long lost.

What would your dear old dad do?

My father died a couple of years ago, so no chance to put it to the test. He was a great believer in independence and making the best of things so might well have left me to it and then told me when I eventually got home that I should try and get some really good stories out of the experience. Oh and asked me what museums/art exhibitions I managed to see during my interesting experiences.

At the same time he might well have connected with influential people and made things happen so I was released early but never have told me about it. Never one for blowing his own trumpet, my father.

My dad would make hilarious witty jokes on Facebook Grin
My step dad would state that he'd sort them out he'd then do nothing whilst posting photos of himself buying expensive stiff on Facebook. [Grin]

emmelinelucas · 16/05/2015 02:09

My dad would have done nothing. He would have sacrificed me just to avoid any kind of confrontation.
My biological father would have made Liam Neeson look like a milquetoast.

My dad would hunt him down and retrieve me probably with some dodgy acquaintances to help.
Years ago I bought some plane tickets from a small agency in birmingham which hadn't shown up by two days before. I was heartbroken but he somehow persuaded the agency owner to drive up North with the tickets. I don't know what he said/threatened him with but he sorted it like he sorts everything.
Love my dad.

lunalelle · 16/05/2015 05:22

My late Dad would have called my older brother. They would have roared off within minutes, in his Ford Escort xr3i, once they'd got the old rifles out of the loft, and Mum had packed the sandwiches.

HagOtheNorth · 16/05/2015 05:32

Full on rescue with all the extras when I was of an age to be trafficked, twenty-some years ago. He has the skill set and the friends and connections.
Probably not much of Paris left standing afterwards.

OH would potter around making tea whilst I flung stuff into a bag and retrieved my passport whilst calling in favours from Dad's friends and relatives.
The lack of testosterone-fulled aggro and his disconnection to reality are a couple of the reasons I married him; much more relaxing and stable that living with my dad.

MythicalKings · 16/05/2015 05:33

My lovely dad is no longer with us but he won WW2 single handed (I've heard the stories) and he'd be right in there slapping people. He'd be speaking loudly in English so that the French people would understand

Alternatively my Welsh Aunt's form of reasoning would have them tied up in psychological knots and they'd let me go and phone Amnesty for support.

My mum would be worrying about what the neighbours would think.

MuttonCadet · 16/05/2015 05:34

My dad would write a strongly worded letter to the editor of the telegraph, my mum and aunts would sort it out.

5YearsTime · 16/05/2015 05:39

My Dad would actually probably have some Neeson skills. He's ex forces and has some pretty specialist skills. Hes served in different wars. He's also fairly regularly had offers of mercenary work or some specialist security work in combat areas. He would also be able to access weapons.

This makes him sound exciting and dangerous...in reality my mum would want him home for dinner and would probably tell him it's just me being dramatic again. He also gets pretty grumpy if he hasn't slept well.

HelenOfToys · 16/05/2015 05:53

My Dad is quiet and reserved and would rather eat a stone cold meal than create a 'fuss' by mentioning it to a waiter. So not a lot.

My Mum however would move heaven and earth to find me, she's like a terrier. Physically she'd be no use but she'd annoy the crap out of them until they were so pissed off they'd give me back just so she'd leave them alone. When they gave me back she'd probably make them a nice cake to say thanks.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 16/05/2015 06:00

He'd call up some of his Masonic mates and get the Volvo through the Chunnel . A secret handshake later we'd be home with St Emilion and cheese. My mam would have a go at him for forgetting to take his mobile phone .

Bombaybunty · 16/05/2015 06:00

My father would've paid someone like Liam Neeson to find me!

CheerfulYank · 16/05/2015 06:08

Mine is good with weapons and is a survivalist type. However he's never been on a plane so he'd have to figure out how to get out of the US first.

My mother would nuke France and call it done.

Playthegameout · 16/05/2015 06:20

My dad would pity the kidnappers! He died 7 years ago, but he knew I could kick ass!

springlamb · 16/05/2015 06:22

My dad would have retreated to his garage to build some sort of wooden 'bad guy busting' structure.
Some months later, once my mum and big sisters had dealt with the entire situation, he would emerge denying all knowledge of my abduction, muttering darkly that he should have been told, horrified that £43.62 had been spent on cross-Channel ferries for five females.
The wooden 'bad guy busting' structure would later be identified as a bookcase for his mate Alf down the Legion.
I loved that guy but he lived in another planet.

acjfluff · 16/05/2015 06:35

Back in the day, my dad would have got some of his fellow forces friends and gone all Neeson on them.

Now, he'd say ooh Paris and start making an itinerary. I'd be forgotten in a haze of sightseeing and French wine.

t3rr3gl35 · 16/05/2015 06:45

This thread has really made me laugh at some of the responses and it brings it home that most dads are simply great people. Unfortunately my dad would have tracked them down to negotiate a cut of whatever they were making out of me. The old bastard is dead now, thankfully.

weaselwords · 16/05/2015 06:54

In his prime, my dad would have driven so fast to get me, the car would skim the channel like a hovercraft. Once in France he would have shouted half-French VERY LOUDLY at everyone and threatened them with the shotgun in his attic like he used to do to my boyfriends. He thinks "Avez vous un cuppa" is proper french. He's big, loud and scary, so it probably would have worked.

Nowadays, he'd have tried to do the same, but got a bit anxious and muddled and possibly even louder, as he's even deafer now. Then my husband would rescue me in a suitably sneaky, ninja way and let my dad think he did it all.

OrangeJuiceSandwich · 16/05/2015 07:38

He's watch the coverage on Sky news, and complain they didn't mention my hometown enough Hmm

Back in the day dad would have rounded up his 4 brothers and they would have beaten the shit out of the sex traffickers, rescued me , then asked if I had a vest on as there was a chill in the air.
Dad now in v poor health so he would phone my cousins, tell them to go, then once rescued ask me if I had a vest on as there is a chill in the air.

DrDiva · 16/05/2015 07:52

Mine would have smiled vaguely, mumbled "jolly dee" and "good egg" and retired to the beach to smoke a pipe and ponder the philosophical ramifications of said kidnapping. If/when I turned up again he would smile equally vaguely and say"jolly good, shall we have some fish and chips then?"

TheCrowFromBelow · 16/05/2015 07:53

My dad would say "Zoots alors" so would mine! Grin followed by "Allo bebe" - at least that's what he did 20 times a day when we went to Brittany in the 80s. Happy days.

He'd have a little think, fiddle with the car, come and get me (driving very fast) and by the end of it would have made best friends with the kidnappers, swapping stories of tricky mechanical problems they've encountered.

I know this because this is what happened when my car got kidnapped for 6 months by a dodgy mechanic once.

Stealthpolarbear · 16/05/2015 07:54

my dad would call the police and do exactly as they advise although he may pay a ransom if asked against their advice. he'd also compile a spreadsheet of all the info and arrange regular updates for all parties
if called upon to act he would give them a nasty thwack with his badminton racquet
