So pleased to see this in Classics!

EBearhug · 09/03/2015 16:26

I love those colours, Caulk.

I need to move to a bigger house before I buy anything else for the walls.

GallicCunt · 09/03/2015 16:42

What dreamy, happy pictures by Yvonne Coomber, Caulk :)

SomewhereIBelong · 09/03/2015 17:13

Sorry MrsWembley (just the one? - love the MName)

it affects me that way too...

strange how I can go from tears looking at a sculpture to feeling uplifted by those Yvonne Coomber pics in the space of 2 posts...

The power of art...

If we can mention sculpture this sculpture just blows me away, how he got the detail in the fabric is beyond me it just unbelievable, and incredible.

I've seen that one in Rome, Millie. You're right about the fluidity in the fabric - he's also made Jesus's flesh astoundingly 'real'. You feel that, if you pressed, it would give way as it has under Mary's hand.
Mary's face is absurdly young, though! I've read about the reasons, but still! Her son must have been born before she was!

Pixa · 10/03/2015 07:39

I have seen that one too when having a private tour of the Vatican. Michelangelo has an unbelievable talent. As did Bernini. Both amazing at making things look and feel lifelike.

People on Twitter might be interested in following this John Constable 'meme': twitter.com/JohnConstableRA. Whoever is behind it posts all sorts of paintings (not just Constable) - it's introduced me to loads of new art and artists.

More Turner - Crossing The Brook.

There is so much fantastic art, and like others on here I also love Miro and Van Gogh.
Even though the title asks for a (singular) painting, I can't resist putting a few of my favourites in here.

This first one - The Kiss of the Sphinx by Von Stuck is, like so much of his work, extremely powerful and dramatic. This, like so many other paintings have had quite an influence in the work I do.

ArtyBat · 10/03/2015 14:35

Horseman of Death

I'd never been fond of Dali or any type of surreal work, but this just holds my attention, and I never tire of studying it.

It also taught me to never typecast an artist.

Hundertwasser really inspires me. Love his use of colour and line.

I was just wondering who More Turner was - never heard of that artist.

Then I realised you meant more by Turner.

Today is a struggle.

LoveLifeDeathHope - Mackenzie Thorpe This man had such a way with Skies. They were huge, overwhelming and breathtaking!

Is Yor Mick coming Out?' - Mackenzie Thorpe* This takes me back to my childhood when calling for friends to come out and play. The adults that opened the door invariably seemed as giants to me, in fact the whole world was giant - sized to my child - sized view. He captures this feeling perfectly.

ladybird69 · 10/03/2015 15:07

If you'd asked me a few years ago I'd have said I hated Van Goghs paintings but then I watched a Dr Who episode about him and found that I actually love some of his! Who knew Dr Who was educational.
Unfortunately I'll never know the name of my favourite painting :-( I saw a photo of it in a magazine in Drs waiting room and never seen it since :-( stupidly didn't copy name of artist.
It was huge hanging in a Gallery or house as there were people standing looking at it on the wall.
The painting was little girls in a glade possibly around a pond. They had garlands of flowers On their heads and I think they were carrying jars with fireflies in them. It was absolutely beautiful and I feel quite sad when I think I'll never see it again

GallicCunt · 10/03/2015 15:20

It wasn't this one, linked upthread, was it ladybird? It's about 5ft high.

Sootgremlin · 10/03/2015 15:29

It wasn't Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose linked by a pp, ladybird69? It sound remarkably similar. If not you might like it anyway! John Singer Sargent.

Sootgremlin · 10/03/2015 15:29

X-post gallic - guess you meant the same one!

OnlyLovers · 10/03/2015 15:29

I can't pick just one ...

I love this Rembrandt. That light on that face. Mesmerises and moves me every time.

The Rothko Room at Tate Modern (although I think they've changed it now?) was like going into a cathedral. I find him generally uplifting, expansive ... awesome in the proper sense. I also loved his black paintings that someone else showed us upthread.

Francis Bacon's screaming popes. Deeply disturbing. So powerful.

Velazquez, generally, but mainly his court portraits. They really seem like real
people, dressed up in their best and playing their parts, but you can see the personalities and sometimes the sadness beneath.

GallicCunt · 10/03/2015 15:31

:) Soot. It must have impressed us both!

ladybird69 · 10/03/2015 15:54

Thanks Soot and Gallic. No it isn't the Sargent one :-( mine has 3/4/5 girls very cherubic looking with flower headdresses and jars with fireflies are much smaller. Wish I was an artist then I could reproduce it!!!!!

DoctorTwo · 26/06/2015 21:30

My current favourite painting is called 'Raining Cats' by an artist called Iris Grace. Hopefully I've uploaded the right file...

Alley By the Lake by Leonid Afremov. I just love the colours.

Chesntoots · 27/06/2015 08:22

I love Serena Hall paintings. They always make me happy, so full of bright colours. I would love an original.

There is an artist in Lanzarote that paints the local goats, they all have names and their expressions are really comical. He is called Dominic Murray. He also does still life etc, but the goats are hilarious. The gallery is called Cabra Cabra (can't link because I'm a bit shit...)
