This is mine. It's called A pageant of childhood By Thomas Cooper Gotch

daisy if you like klimt, look up watersnakes :)

Moln · 08/03/2015 20:08

Billingsgatedoxy I always thought The Birth of Venus was ok. Then 15 years ago I was in Florence with work. It was really low season (so no long queues) I took a bit of time to go see "some paintings" Grin I audible gasped when I walked in to room with The birth of Venus.

It's just incredible in real life.

Billingsgatedoxy · 08/03/2015 20:16

Moin I know! the impact of it in real life is incredible! I didn't expect to be bowled over by it but I really was. I took the kids to see it a couple of years ago and had the same reaction again.

BeyondRepair · 08/03/2015 20:20

moln where is turret one

BeyondRepair · 08/03/2015 20:23

moln just read about it, very moving, its in ireland on limited ticket release!

SmartiesMakeMeNaughty · 08/03/2015 20:25

spaceal that Baltic show was one of the best exhibitions I've seen. Creepy and moving and elegiac and gorgeous.
The Marlene Dumas show at Tate modern just now is excellent too.

Billingsgatedoxy · 08/03/2015 20:28

Sorry Moln not Moin! I have never seen the the Meeting on the Turret Stairs before but it is kind of perfect, so full of emotion.

ohmymimi · 08/03/2015 20:30

I have loads, but the one that always makes my heart miss a beat, and uplifts me, is Jackson Pollock's 'Summertime' (9a). It's (very badly) exhibited in Tate Modern. I'd love it on the wall facing my bed, so I could wake up to it every day.

DopeyDawg · 08/03/2015 20:30

BestisWest - I love that Rembrandt drawing too. I have a small copy framed.

Moln thank you for introducing me to the Hildegaard stairwell painting - beautiful! Such tenderness and protectiveness on his face.

I have a copy of The Girl with the Pearl Earring. H hates it so it's in the basement atm but I'm going to hang it up soon. I luffs it.

I think one of my favourites is a large Victorian work - I'm off to look it up as I cant remember the title...

DopeyDawg · 08/03/2015 20:35

Aargh! Cant find it Blush

It is of a station or journey with lots of faces with wonderful expressions. Holman Hunt style and era. Anyone know???

Speaking of Holman Hunt - I fell in love with 'The Lady of Shallot' as a romantic 15 year old. I still love it.

'The Scapegoat' takes some beating for eeriness though.

Opopanax · 08/03/2015 20:39

Such a fab thread. I have looked up all the pictures I didn't already know. I think it should be in classics too.

wearenotinkansas · 08/03/2015 20:40

I love Lautrec, particularly this one. Maybe because I think his women look convincingly like real women

TeacupDrama · 08/03/2015 20:43

Albrecht Durer the hare, his self portraits are amazing too as is melancholia

EBearhug · 08/03/2015 20:49

DopeyDawg, is it William Powell Frith's The Railway Station?

If we're going for Dürer, it has to be the Great Piece of Turf.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 08/03/2015 20:54

I love a lot of van Gogh's

Cypresses is beautiful & as a PP said, seeing an image doesn't prepare you for the impact of the actual painting - I was shocked when I saw this at how vibrant & beautiful the colours were

Meeting on the Turret is in the National Gallery in Dublin.

I work about 15 min walk from the Gallery too! I'm going to have to take a morning off

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 08/03/2015 20:55

(There are several versions of this though - no idea which one I actually saw)

GallicIsCharlie · 08/03/2015 21:11

Wow, EBear, hadn't seen that Dürer turf picture before. It's amazing :)

BestIsWest · 08/03/2015 21:21

I hadn't seen the Durer before either. Amazing.

Sagethyme · 08/03/2015 21:25

I love Lea Goldberg's art...sorry not sure how to link, but i love the bright funky cats, it reminds me slightly of Beryl Cooks' art work....but animals instead of people!

pointythings · 08/03/2015 21:26

This one by Monet. Makes you just want to walk into it and away from all the crap in your life. I saw it in the Louvre and never went on to watch anything else.

So you have a favourite painting?
Aladyinsane · 08/03/2015 21:27

Francis Danby 'The Deluge'. It's very striking in real life.

I have a copy, ripped from the newspaper, in a little frame!

I am going to Holland soon and Girl with the Pearl is going to be an hour away from us, very tempted to go and see it, but it means missing Amsterdam.

We saw Lady today in the Tate, just introduced DD to it and the poem.

Exquisite, makes me want to get a rowing boat and float up and down the Thames Blush
