Mine, same as Fluff is Christ of St John on the cross by Salvador Dali

Second favourite is 'The singing butler' by Jack Vettriano

It's a shame as I love JSS's work in general and there was an exhibition at the national gallery when I was in London a few weeks ago, but it was quite expensive to go into that part of the gallery so we couldn't justify it Sad

idlevice · 08/03/2015 00:59

Littlefiendsusan I think the painting you mean is The Hunt in the Forest by Uccello. It's noteworthy for its treatment of perspective.

AmyElliotDunne · 08/03/2015 01:01

Ooh Undertone, a fellow Sargent lover. Very handsome portrait!

A Bar at the Folie-Bergere, by Manet. It's in the Courtauld in London, and they have very considerately put a bench facing it at just the right distance. could sit there for a very very long time.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 08/03/2015 01:10

Also, Frida Kahlo.

Casperthefriendlyspook · 08/03/2015 01:46

One - hard to explain why I love the winged victory so much.... I think it's because it's mysterious with it being missing the head, and also it's a strong emblem of womanhood. I love the detail of the wing, the drape of the dress, and musculature of the arm. I can only imagine what it was like when it was complete...

Strumpers the room full of Rothko's Seagram murals at the Tate is captivating as well.

Reminds me of the most amazing moment walking into a gallery room: the room full of Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly paintings in Canberra. Mind blowing.

MrsWembley, yes, they do use that story. Which is part of what connects to Lanyon, as he got into gliding as a way of literally getting into weather and landscapes.

I really liked the film as I learnt a lot about Turner and Timothy Spall is fabulous, and there's some v tender relationships with his dad and with Mrs Booth.

Here's the link to the Ned Kelly series: nga.gov.au/Nolan/Index.cfm

Whoever was asking about the Winged Victory check this out: musee.louvre.fr/oal/victoiredesamothrace/victoiredesamothrace_acc_en.html

I'd be hard pressed to choose just one, pretty well anything by Caspar David Friedrich will do. This one for example.

Amy I went to that exhibition. Some interesting pieces (not least a mouthwatering pencil sketch of Yeats) but the crowds packed into the rooms were very frustrating.

Undertone · 08/03/2015 11:17

Here's that sketch

That Sargent exhibition at the NPG is well worth every penny - there are some really great pieces there. But yes, exhibition-going can be an expensive business these days.

BestIsWest · 08/03/2015 14:59

Love this Rembrandt drawing too

Delacroix - Horse frightened by a storm

beautiful, emotive, primal

dreamingofblueskies · 08/03/2015 15:38

Mine are quite lowbrow compared to some on here, but I love them anyway.
Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, I just find it quite evocative.

Kohler's Pig by Michael Sowa, it just makes me smile.

The Four Elements by Joachim Beuckelaer - its actually four paintings, but one of the most impressive displays in the National Gallery

fairnotfit · 08/03/2015 16:11

I love Atkinson Grimshaw's paintings, and this is one of my favourites.

I also love the cartoons of Jean-Jacques Sempe and Ronald Searle. I think they both capture small boys wonderfully well.

This is a lovely thread - it's a shame it's in Chat, and will disappear after 90 days. Anyone else think it should be nominated for Classics? It's certainly a thread that would stand the test of time... Smile

Hellelil and Hildebrand, The Meeting on the Turret Stairs

I love this one.

Though there others, this is the one that first comes to mind.

The Doge Loredan by Bellini

Its in the National Gallery and I love it. He has the wisdom of ages in his face - the painting technique is sublime.
