It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Looks a bit like Rosalind Russell to me.

Shodan · 07/11/2014 23:56

Gawd.

All the actresses from 'those days' look remarkably similar.

I've tried Irene Dunne, Rosalind Russell and Loretta Young and there's hardly anything to choose between them- though I'm leaning towards Irene Dunne.

Have we discounted Cary Grant as the bloke?

DaffodilField · 08/11/2014 00:03

Watching. And in awe of your film knowledge.

Just to add to the mix - it might not be from an English language film right? German? French?

Donna Reed had a fringe in FHTE though, I think? And I've seen IAWL so many times that I just feel I'd know her face anywhere, and that doesn't look enough like her.

Jeanne Crain? She has a look of her but I don't know who the man is or what movie.

LouiseBrooks · 08/11/2014 00:49

Unbelievably frustrating! Time for bed for me too. Hopefully we'll found out tomorrow.

Phantomquartz · 08/11/2014 01:06

Could it be Susan Hayward?

Collectorofcookbooks · 08/11/2014 06:29

Bette Davis at the end of Now Voyager?

BOFster · 08/11/2014 07:49

I tried Susan Hayward with Ty Powers, but definitely not those films. I can't see it being Bette: she's got such a distinctive face, not at all like the one in the clip.

Morning! Marvellous thread. I agree doesn't 'feel' like iawl. Have used all my other suggestions though. Shamefully marking place as I need to know now! Will lurk. Be strong op! Brew

Stupidhead · 08/11/2014 08:06

Oh God, shameless place marking...!!!

BOFster · 08/11/2014 08:43

Ooh, if you look at Jeanne Crain and her husband in this trailer for A Letter To Three Wives, I think that couple could be serious contenders. I need to find more scenes from the film to check though, as I have only seen it once and hat was years ago.

I decided for my sanity after trawling through different actresses that it must be a mock up. But am still coming back to it!

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 08/11/2014 08:54

I do see what you mean about Jeanne Crain. here she is in 'People will Talk'

Help me identify this film from the John Lewis advert?
WhereTheWildlingsAre · 08/11/2014 09:01

Except Jean has bigger ear lobes, I think.

BOFster · 08/11/2014 09:13

Jeanne is the frontrunner at the moment...

So am joining the thread to say I'm giving up - i started from an assumption its Montgomery Clift and have gone right through his back catalogue and theres nothing that fits - DH is pretty sure its him.

He also thinks its susan hayward (and i think it maybe is?) but the only film they're in together is maverick queens which really, really doesn't fit!

So I'm coming down on the side of a mock up.....

Have ruled out loads of women though - not Olivia de Havilland, not Eva Marie Sainte, not Joan Fontaine etc etc....

BOFster · 08/11/2014 09:36

If everybody who tweets can ask the ad agency @aandeddb , then we might get them to give us the answer. I am really cross that they have ignored Squeaver!

I think there's a big clue in that there's no Credit given to any existing film
Ad Week so would say it was shot for the ad.

Ben Priest, partner of Adam & Eve Agency is also on Twitter

Shockers · 08/11/2014 10:20

Why would it cost so much to mock it up? Surely it's just a question of wardrobe/ make up and filming technique...
