It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Hmm, but the little clip of Pingu which the ad opens with isn't credited either, so...

Unless there are Pingu experts who can tell us if that is also a mock-up?

BeckAndCall · 08/11/2014 10:21

I think you've hit the nail on the head enrique - no credits listed so it must be a mock up....

KatoPotato · 08/11/2014 10:25

It's Shrek.

Pingu experts Grin

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 10:38

My DM says it definitely not Mongtomery Clift (he was one of her favourites) as the clip looks too early. She's gone to ask my DF to watch it as he is very good at idenitfying the ladies Grin

BOFster · 08/11/2014 10:40

I think it's too early for Monty Clift too.

A friend of a friend works in marketing for John Lewis and helped to create this, so have asked friend to ask her.

5446

brilliant!

SirNoel · 08/11/2014 10:48

I'm really quite worried that it will RUIN Bof's Xmas if it is a mock up

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 10:50

Apparently my DF is now getting stressed trying to come up with an answer!

BOFster · 08/11/2014 10:53

5446, all hands on deck, that's the spirit!

SirNoel, I'm clinging to the assumption that a mock-up with new actors or CGI would have to be more expensive than just buying the rights to a genuine clip...

Where are our Pingu experts?

OP posts:
ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 10:56

I used to watch a lot of Pingu back in the day, but I can not say for sure.
the acting is just not as high quality as I remember it.
Grin

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 10:57

but it could be the episode where Pingu plays ice hockey.

SirNoel · 08/11/2014 10:58

It deffo looks like Pingu....

I keep watching the film clip and coming back to the same thing. Young Cliff Richard and Deanna Durbin made a movie together. There you go.

BOFster · 08/11/2014 11:02

Cliff Richard???Shock

OP posts:
Girlwhowearsglasses · 08/11/2014 11:03

Seriously are you saying too expensive to mock up that clip??

(Spoiler alert)

The penguin isn't real. Everything in that entire advert is manipulated for your viewing pleasure.

On reflection I think she is too young and innocent to be one of those goddesses of the screen. The clip sort of looks like pure and simple affection and love - there can't have been a film with a great deal of back story going on before it.
overthinking in desperation now

Raahh · 08/11/2014 11:03

I have been thinking about this all night.

Bloody annoying, isn't it? Grin

And yes, if it's a mock-up , Christmas will be CANCELLED.

But maybe that's the point of the ad? The penguin is fake, the film clip is fake...they are stopping just short of saying Father Christmas doesn't exist

possibly over thinking this

I have got a theory that the moment the mum watches the little boy playing, the moment he realises he is being watched, the moment that the penguins are revealed as toys - that is the moment that the little boy loses his ability to unconsciously lose himself in imaginative play. He will always love and play with the penguins - but they aren't real any more.

Which makes me sad in a whole different way, and is a bit like the moment children realise Santa isn't real.

SirNoel · 08/11/2014 11:11

Oh god you lot have cheered me right up this morning, thanks v much

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 08/11/2014 11:14

That's totally Pingu!

The advert actually reminds me more of Calvin and Hobbes. Calvin's capacity for imagination in that is always a joy. I see it as the penguin is real to the boy as Hobbes is real to Calvin.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 08/11/2014 11:16

5446 No pressure Grin

In order to make my theory fit I'm going to declare that's not Pingu, it's one of Monty's home movies.

It's just odd that in articles and reviews John Lennon and Tom Odell get lots of mentions. I can understand Pingu not being mentioned as he's so obvious, but somewhere you'd have thought, well, I'd have thought, there'd be a snippet of something about the black and white film. All I can see in Google results is the Daily Mail mentioning 'a black and white classic movie'

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 08/11/2014 11:16

I would have bought it would be quicker to get a researcher to find a clip rather than mock one up, director, actors, hair, makeup, blah blah.

That's what keeps bringing me back!
