It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

Some bigger screenshots for clues to the female's identity.

I don't think it's a fake IAWL attempt, because they haven't tried very hard. Donna Reed has earrings and he has jacket and scarf on.
Makes me think its a different scene altogether

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/11/2014 16:26

I'm hoping that PP connections to the ad agency come through or someone gets a twitter response. I fear it's our only hope.

PomPomPingPong · 08/11/2014 16:37

Patricia Roc?

Girlwhowearsglasses · 08/11/2014 16:46

pedantmarina tags why I think it's mocked up - so there's no back story

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/11/2014 16:55

Lots of old b&w films come up on TV from time to time. I've seen millions. I'm afraid I can't help with identifying this clip, though.

It is 100% definitely not Brief Encounter which I've seen so many times I can say the dialogue along with Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard.

BOFster · 08/11/2014 17:04

I had to go out for the afternoon before I went completely mad. Still no answer? Grin

Until this thread, I didn't realise it wasn't IAWL & can't believe I've gone right through the thread & there's no answer!!

Boomtownsurprise · 08/11/2014 17:56

Heartstrumpsdiamonds

Wow. That's a great fame claim Grin

(Wonders about bragging rights of 'knowing' someone who is related to a famous movie star via typing on an anonymous website....)

snice · 08/11/2014 18:07

We need to get some proper old people onto this not just 50somethings like me- let's send it over to Gransnet

BOFster · 08/11/2014 18:10

A cousin of my grandad's actually won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar- the old Irish character actor Barry Fitzgerald. He was actually considered for the part of Clarence the angel in It's A Wonderful Life- that would have made my entire LIFE Grin.

Nowhere near as glamorous as Rosalind Russell though.

Is it something with Susan Hayward in? or has she been suggested already?

BOFster · 08/11/2014 18:18

She has. We can't find a film of hers that fits.

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 18:22

Is Lee Mack glamorous? Grin I know him.

Raahh · 08/11/2014 18:29

Lee Mack Grin

I'm now completely gripped by this thread. We need the answer STAT.

In answer to the query up thread from thecatfromjapan, get thee to Movie Mail and you'll be in B & W movie heaven. I've practically bankrupted myself buying obscure Btitish films of the 30's & 40's Shock Blush

Sorry, can't do link as I'm on phone....

Halsall · 08/11/2014 18:32

Ooh, look, I managed a link - here

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 08/11/2014 18:40

I think it looks like Susan Hayward in The Lusty Men.

LouiseBrooks · 08/11/2014 18:47

I found this pic of a young Susan Hayward, it doesn't really look like her I think - different eyebrows.

I can't believe we still don't know.

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 18:48

you need to keep up your strength people! Wink

PedantMarina · 08/11/2014 18:50

Zing got any white wine? Or Rum?

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 08/11/2014 18:52

Marking place to find out the answer! I'll ask DH as he's a bit of a film buff.

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 18:55

[white wine] [rum] [cocktails]

Jbck · 08/11/2014 19:04

Asked dh earlier, big geek and on some really hardcore quiz gangs online, didn't know.

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 19:28

My DM is still sending me texts about this Grin. My DF is adamant that the man is James Stewart but I think the sideburns are too untidy...
