It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

When I lived in Devon, I'd go to the Plymouth Arts Centre.

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 13:36

Aaaargh. I thought you would have found the answer by now. It better be real.

Anyway, any redommendations for an old film to watch today? I have Sky Movies and Netflix.

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 08/11/2014 13:58

Redommendations? What kind of auto correct is that? Hmm

PoppyAmex · 08/11/2014 14:00

Is it Mrs Miniver?

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 08/11/2014 14:10

I spent some time this morning looking at Love is on the Air HERE
which looks like a great resource for old films.

MrsBloodCurdlingscrEames · 08/11/2014 14:12

Can't believe I read the whole thing and no answer ??

BOFster · 08/11/2014 14:12

You can't go wrong with something like Brief Encounter, Rebecca, Notorious, or good old It's A Wonderful Life, Pete.

Is the woman Rita Hayworth?

BOFster · 08/11/2014 14:17

No, not Rita Hayworth.

I think they eyebrows look right for Rita Hayworth.

I love Rebecca but it's not available online. Have added to my Christmas list though.

BOFster · 08/11/2014 14:21

You can watch Rebecca on YouTube! And Gilda, with Rita Hayworth. Alice, I'd know Rita's face anywhere, I think the woman in the clip is far less famous.

AliceLidl · 08/11/2014 14:26

I've watched the clip a few times now and I think you're right about it not being her, her face looks different in motion to in the still.

His shirt, does the collar look a bit weird? Is it some sort of sailor collar or something?

Bazza2 · 08/11/2014 14:27

Easter Parade is on BBC2 right now so we should all watch it while we think about it.

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 14:30

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline The Women (the 1938 version!) is one of my favourites.

PetulaGordino · 08/11/2014 14:31

God I hate you all. I was QUITE HAPPY not knowing that it wasn't obvious what film it was, especially as my knowledge of films of that time is limited to the most well-known. Now I MUST KNOW what it is

PedantMarina · 08/11/2014 14:31

The problem I've got is if that kiss isn't from a film involving people really finding true love, I'm going to be really disappointed. Like, what if that kiss is just before a betrayal, or extra-marital people like Zing and MrBOF ? Then I'll be all, like, "man, that penguin is learning the wrong values".

BOF if you're having a video watching party rounds yours, can I come? I love making popcorn.

SorrelForbes · 08/11/2014 14:31

I love a bit of Ann Miller

Birra · 08/11/2014 14:32

It might not be a case of not paying up for the clip of IAWL, whoever owns the rights can just refuse for a clip to be used. Then there's not much you can do.
Although clips of IAWL have been used in other movies before. But that doesn't necessarily mean they let clips be used now. Rights can be sold at any point, and things change especially with companies being bought out etc.

socially · 08/11/2014 14:33

I thought it was brief encounter?

ZingOfSeven · 08/11/2014 14:36

I've just had an image of BOF still trying to find the answer when she is all white-haired and trembly, muttering to herself, surrounded by high tech equipment to analyse and store images, photos wallpapering her dusty little den.
Every now and then she'll stop in her tracks, gaze into the distance then let out a little cackle....

poor old bird...clutching to hope

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 08/11/2014 14:39

Found Rebecca on You Tube. Will put The Women on my new sparkly films to watch list.
