What sexist behaviour would be the most shocking if reversed?

I was thinking feminist thoughts to myself (as you do Grin ), and I was thinking about how this belief that sexism doesn't exist anymore creates a huge backlash against anyone who speaks out against it, which in turn makes people who do in fact believe in equal rights for men and women try to distance themselves from feminism because it's perceived as crazy and unreasonable. The problem is that a lot of it is so ingrained in our culture and society that it is completely normalised, and the majority of people don't even notice it anymore.

So what would be the most obvious, outrageous sexist behaviour, if we swapped the genders? Would it be men being followed, harassed and intimidated in the street, or on the music channel men gyrating and grinding dressed increasingly revealing clothing while women are all fully clothed? Men dancing in the windows of the red light district, or the overwhelming majority of politicians and CEOs being female?

What in your opinion would bring about the most uproar if one day sexism suddenly switched genders?

Sorry if any part of this doesn't make sense, I had a beautifully written OP all typed out and then my iPad lost it all for no apparent reason... Angry

Men's clothing being designed to showcase their balls. Trousers could be high or low cut, or with a peephole to give a glimpse of the goodies. Trousers would have crotch slogans to draw the eye. Paparazzi would attempt to get shots of side ball and men would use testes tape to keep them in place. Wardrobe malfunctions where balls fall out of trousers would be common due to the precarious nature of the way they are dressed, and these would appear as top stories on the DM sidebar of shame. Support underwear to display balls to their best advantage would be a major market, with some men stuffing their pants with chicken fillets or padding to make up for their small balls. Everyone remembers the billboard that caused pile-ups of a man with his massive balls propped up to his belly button with the slogan 'Hello girls'.

Men who wear high-waisted trousers are thought to be frigid.

The speeches one is shocking isn't it Salted ? I just cannot imagine a man sitting there smirking silently while his new wife, his wife's best mate from school and his mum all made speeches, and everyone thinking that was ok and normal.

Pleased to say at my friends' weddings so far, all the brides have made speeches (but no bridesmaids or mums yet).

Essel · 22/06/2014 02:19

If the women's World Cup was far bigger than the men's, and all the guys sat around in pubs watching women playing football and talking about it on Facebook.

I could just never imagine men supporting women's sport the way women support men's sport.

Another thought..
A man eats a bar of chocolate. A group of women spend some time commenting on how he'll have to watch the calories, a moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips, nobody loves a lardy lad.. Two more women take a photo of him and post it on a website callled "Men who eat in the street". Many women express their disgust.
Meanwhile, women eat what they like, wherever they want, without comment.

SwiftRelease · 22/06/2014 10:53

Gosh all these are so true. And sad! Yet so many women hate to identify as feminists! About time more of us did? Our silent majority seems generally oblivious is peer-pressured into buying into their sexualisation and exploitation as a consumer and, more particularly, as a female.

HazleNutt · 22/06/2014 11:37

On public transport, women would spread their legs and take half of their neighbour's seat as well. On planes, it would be expected that women hog both armrests, while men fold themselves as small as possible.

I remember an experiment where a woman was disguised as a man. One thing she mentioned was how much space she suddenly had - on the street, in a bar etc, everybody would respectfully give her (when they thought it was a him) space and would not squeeze or push her.

Scarletohello · 22/06/2014 14:25

Yes there was an interesting book written by a woman who disguised herself as a man for 8 months, it was called Self made man' by Norah Vincent. Fascinating read!

TheCowThatLaughs · 22/06/2014 21:53

Sorry if this has already been said or if I don't explain it well, but the phrase "mothering a child" was used to refer merely tp the moment of conception and the gestation period, while "fathering" of a child meant doing everything else after that!

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 22/06/2014 22:19

Evan tempted Ada with an apple, thereby causing The Fall of Woman and the eviction of womankind from the Garden of Eden.

Thousands of years later, men were still cast as temptresses, and when Brenda Pitt got a divorce, men would wear "Team Jeremy" or "Team Angelo" t-shirts, and most of the blame would be put on the pouting Angelo.

AndHarry · 22/06/2014 22:33

Men being unable to travel alone in much of the world as it would be too unsafe/culturally impossible.

Will now go and RTT.

ShouldHaveMarriedTimDowling · 23/06/2014 22:15

"Go on MY DAUGHTER!!" Would be shouted out at any respectable school sports day.

Shops would be called "Smiths and daughters"

vladthedisorganised · 24/06/2014 10:03

NotAgainTrevor that was a fantastic post.

Another one - a mainstream newspaper would do a whole article on workwear for men that featured skin-tight shirts and tight trousers which made walking difficult. However, the fashion gurus would assure their readers that it was "a perfect look for the boardroom - it says "I can use my sexuality in a professional way to get business" '. Over the page, women wear 'slick' suits that 'exude authority'.

TimDowling, there is actually a Smith and Daughters business near me! I think it's a monumental masons IIRC.

OscarFrancoisDeJarjayes · 24/06/2014 12:16

Glad to hear. Good on Mr and Mrs Smith.

Female quiz show hosts would congratulate contestants with "good boy" when they get the answer right. Even the contestant is older than them.

Beachcomber · 24/06/2014 18:48

In schools and universities nearly all the books studied and concepts explored would be the work of women. Everyone would find this normal and it would be considered understandable that girls and women wouldn't engage much with the odd token offering penned by a man - after all it's difficult for them to identify with a non female protagonist/author/perspective.

Same for films, the vast majority of major characters would be female with the odd conventionally attractive man thrown in as the "love interest".

(This thread should be in classics.)

JaneParker · 24/06/2014 19:57

(On weddings I gave the parents' speech at my daughters wedding. We are all feminists. No one gave her away in church as she is not owned.
Things are changing for the better but we must be vigilant)

Another example every fundamentalist muslim man is not allowed to leave the home unless accompanied by a woman and only if he is fully veiled. His wife is allowed 4 husbands but he only one wife and when the parents die the women inherit double what the men do. Only women can work. Men are forbidden by law from driving and voting.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 24/06/2014 20:12

We would instinctively find deep voices lacking in authority: timesonline.typepad.com/dons_life/2014/06/quotes-and-sort-of-mis-quotes.html

HazleNutt · 24/06/2014 20:26

Newspapers would have headlines like "Man inventor.." or "Male politician.." and most of the article would not be about their work, but about their family (with the inevitable "but how do you balance work and children and can men have it all?" ) and their choice of lipstick.

When andy coulson spends the night under the same roof as the husband of a politician, the media would describe them as having a "sleep over".

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 25/06/2014 00:54

The word 'woman' would be applied to people of both genders indiscriminately. When men point this out, they are lectured about 'PC gone mad'.
