Congratulations on all the reasonableness, Chris.

Fruit trees are my kind of gardening, too. I always assumed I'd grow veg when I finally got a garden, but who can be arsed with that? I'm far happier with my trees that I get to hack branches off every now and again and otherwise leave to get on with it. The field sounds perfect for an orchard, but until you get that established I can provide damson gin, bramble vodka and crab apple brandy. Perhaps I could set up a hedgerow cocktail bar.

For music I can bring 2 pop/indie choirs and one children's one. All fairly tuneful and very enthusiastic. And if you still need welsh singers my very sarf lahndan 7 year old and her classmates only ever sing happy birthday in welsh since their lovely welsh class teacher taught them 2 years ago.

Mrs Nutella- I used to live near Nurnberg. Glühwein! Oh yeah!

shushpenfold · 31/01/2014 06:54

Thanks FUCATH - good news and I'll keep watching. x

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 31/01/2014 08:24

Ida Grin

Thomaslynn you're hired! Get cooking! And fining and I'll find someone to get milking!

Enrique I love how you all have a secret stash of hedgerow booze for just such an occasion.

Across, I'd assume breast milk would be nicer, it's much sweeter isn't it?

Lill, :) there's still time for it all to go wrong! I wouldn't be surprised if UW collapsed clutching her chest , she's quite the drama queen.

Glaikit nowt's happened :) there you go! And yes to choir!

Renter, we'll have to find a way. It's Wales, the chances of no rain? Pretty slim!

Nutella, that's a big yes to the men in lederhosen muses on what dh would look like in lederhosen

Jammie, crab apple brandy?! This is a new one on me. I've always thought you could only make jams with them. Are you telling me crab apples are useful?! Love the idea of all the landahners singing Penblwydd Hapus :)

Shush :)

It does confuse other parents at birthday parties.

If mumsnet can make vodka from dishwashers, I can make brandy from crabapples. There's nothing that can't be improved with a big slug of booze and a few months at the bottom of the cupboard.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 31/01/2014 10:10

Very true :) I made rhubarb and custard vodka for a wedding last year, it was amazing.

Do you do it in a similar way to sloe gin? Sugar and apples and that's it? Or is there a trick to it?

OP posts:
Meerka · 31/01/2014 12:31

I can bring Oud Jenever as well as choc cake .... it's the forerunner of Gin. Tastes like treebark, but nice treebark

FYF has a definite gin-and-no-horses theme doesnt it?

AngelaDaviesHair · 31/01/2014 12:35

Have you ever made quince brandy? It is the best thing ever.

FryOneFatManic · 31/01/2014 12:40

I once made some Damson Vodka from windfall damsons. Fantastic stuff.

Sadly, I'm unlikely to be able to get any of those windfalls again, so I did have a go at Sloe Gin, and Rhubarb Vodka. Also fantastic.... Grin

FryOneFatManic · 31/01/2014 12:45

I'm also working on my dad to see if he'll make the fantastic ginger wine he made a few years ago. Now, that WAS epic. 19% proof minimum, when your average shop wine is around 12%.

He'd more or less given up wine making, but I'm really trying to persuade him. Grin

CrazyCatLady13 · 31/01/2014 13:32

Have followed this since the beginning of the first thread, now delurking (hope you don't mind!)

Offering the services of my teenage tortoise who loves to sit on people's feet, and I can bring some chocolate & cream vodka if that's any use?? Grin

Hoping it goes smoothly for you from now on!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 31/01/2014 15:05

Gin and no horses :)

What's see through and tastes of Gin?

Gin and no-horses.

I'll get me coat.

Angela, I have not! I am intrigued. Quince is another thing I though would only make some kind of jam/jelly.

Fryone, ginger wine must be its own hangover cure?!

Crazycatlady, everyone knows how I love a delurker Wink

Tortoise eh? Excellent. So now we have a bearded dragon and a tortoise! Our livestock is coming along nicely. I'm sure we can find some use for the vodka Grin

Recipe is in a Nigella Lawson book I borrowed and have now returned, but from memory it's really simple:

  1. Wash and cut up three quinces into thin wedges.
  1. Place in clean bottle, seeds and all.
  1. Fill bottle with brandy so quinces are covered.
  1. Keep for min three months, shaking periodically.

The brandy is flavoured and perfumed with quince. It tastes sweet and mellow. I'm not a brandy drinker really, but this is fantastic.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 31/01/2014 15:21

Angela, well you can't get easier than that. I'll give it a go :)

AngelaDaviesHair · 31/01/2014 15:22

Don't blame me if you get hammered.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 31/01/2014 15:45

:) I will try to take personal responsibility

I can't drink gin anymore (a misspent youth), so I will have to stick to all the blackberry vodka and quince brandy that will be featuring at FYF.
Meerka my gin intolerance doesn't extend to Oude Jenever which I am quite partial too, the Jonge Jenever on the other hand..

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 31/01/2014 15:51

Ida, how have I not had this barky gin?

OP posts:
Meerka · 31/01/2014 16:09

Ida Yes! jong jenever is bleh. way too sweet. Oude? mmmMMMM dangerous stuff. Nice to find someone else who likes it :)

Meerka · 31/01/2014 16:09

oops sorry chris. it's Dutch and hard to find in the UK.

IdaBlankenship · 31/01/2014 16:18

I lived in the Netherlands - they make you drink Jenever and eat salty licorice in order to get your residents permit!

AcrossthePond55 · 31/01/2014 16:46

I love Genever. But only over ice with a squeeze of lime. It does NOT make a good mixed drink.

There's a beer brewery in San Francisco that has branched out to distilling. They make a good gin, too.

Jux · 31/01/2014 17:17

An orchard! What a lovely idea. You could have pet pigs rooting amongst the general leafiness. Or sheep.

Pigs get sunburnt. That's the sum of my knowledge of pigs. Oh, and if you feed them curry the bacon will taste curried.

FryOneFatManic · 31/01/2014 17:24

I don't know about ginger wine being a hangover cure Grin

But I did once watch someone drink 6 pints of it in one evening (yes, SIX) Shock

And to all intents and purposes, he looked pretty sober walking home.......

ChameleonCircuit · 31/01/2014 17:34

Ok, I'm finally delurking. I can't drink (DH says one drink and I'm anybody's, two and I'm anybody's!) so I can be the person who speaks to the local constabulary and convinces them that we're not going to be any bother. I can also bring DH and his multitude of synths and a didgeridoo. DD can dance and DS can provide comedy. I'm also a large norked Yorkshire lass with a nice line in bosom hoiking, so UW doesn't stand a chance with me, the nun and the religious granny. Grin
