Wetaugust, I'm referring to in store only, not any online sales.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/01/2014 21:31

That website has been set up npby Tom Beckett of B and Q dishwasher fame www.bitterwallet.com/bq-%E2%80%93-the-dishwashers-with-no-discretion/13425

You may yet get your chairs...

WTF can't MN do auto links!

youarewinning · 09/01/2014 22:08

Am just reading this, with my recliner decliner email also open - and the news comes on saying M&S have suffered the biggest fall of non food sales this Christmas.

So why cancel riders for 1 billion recliner chairs Markies, eh?

I've missed last 3 pages but I don't think anyone was really expecting one?

youarewinning · 09/01/2014 22:14

Oh sorry Maryz. X posted there.

Yes the page by Tom Beckett makes me feel slightly uneasy. I think it's a bit much to be pushing M&S into making such a massive, massive loss to prove a point, when it appears to have been a genuine mistake, possibly a disgruntled member of staff. Who knows?

ButICantaloupe · 09/01/2014 22:43

If the chairs were meant to be £599 and there were 999 @50psold then that would equal a £597,901.49 loss.

It would be really bad business sense if they did it - regardless of the PR.

HettiePetal · 09/01/2014 22:45

It's also worth mentioning that the law expects people to exercise some common sense - if it's an obvious mistake, the retailer doesn't have to honour it. So, if they'd accidentally had it on for, say, £300 instead of £600, they'd probably have to honour the order because it wouldn't necessarily be obvious to the buyer that it was a mistake.

But 50p?

The most important part of their email is the bit about "we hope you can see this was an obvious pricing error on our part" because, if tested in court, this would save them. A reasonable person would see it was a mistake.

Still - I am a bit sad we're not getting our recliners. Me & DS were going to line them up in front of our TV like Joey and Chandler Grin.

LittleThorinOakenshield · 09/01/2014 22:45

It's going to be worth them not honouring it absolutely I'd say.

Would imagine more than 999 sold if this was all over the internet.

And no one even wants the poor beige things.

LittleThorinOakenshield · 09/01/2014 22:45

Percy pigs would not go amiss though.

GoofyIsACow · 09/01/2014 22:46

IM NOT BEING FUCKING FUNNY RIIIGHHT BUT THE FUCKING POUND LEFT MY ACCOUNT AFTER I GT THE FUCKING RECLINER DECLINER.... Angry

ButICantaloupe · 09/01/2014 22:46

I thought it said on their website that 999 were available. Maybe I misread.

Even so it's a huge, huge loss.

wetaugust · 09/01/2014 22:51

ButICantaloupe - I was talking about in-store too.

Thanks Wingdingdong - I wrote offer when it should have been invitation Blush

BelleOfTheBorstal · 09/01/2014 22:52

And how much did Marks and Sparks spend on it's christmas campaign? Bet it was more than £500,000.

Maryz I quite agree. Not one single person in the country would seriously have believed it was going to be sold for fifty pence. Can't believe people are getting on the campaign trail about it (on the wider Internet).

Some are on tge m&s website quoting DPA to stop m&s using their info card details for anything other they what they were given for Confused

Bearfrills · 10/01/2014 07:23

Some people are complete arses.

It was a giggle to think we could actually buy the chairs for 50p and then there was the sheer horror excitement of "omg, what if they actually do deliver it?!", the brass necked-ness of a petition and protest songs, followed by the obsessive checking of email for the inevitable recliner decliner that we all knew was coming.

Why would people actually believe that they'd get a very ugly expensive chair for 50p? Obviously their reality is not the same as our reality and I can't understand the anger over it.

I hope that, if it was genuine human error, they don't sack the poor person who did it.

ziggiestardust · 10/01/2014 07:27

I think it still would have been nice to say 'well, we fucked up didn't we?! Still, a lot of people said they would have donated them to charity anyway, so we are donating 20 recliners to Age Concern/Shelter/whatever'

They could have come out of this quite well, I think. Had they done that straight off the bat, people complaining would have had no sympathy and been in the minority.

HoneyDragon · 10/01/2014 07:30

I think the goodwill gesture with the TVs is biting M&S I the bum.

But that was different as they were still £199.00. M&S had loads at silly prices as everyone needed to go as they were no longer intending to sell electricals. So there was leeway for complaint as £199 is a significant sum to come out your account for 5 days whilst a company ditherers, and then another 5 days to process.

No one has a right to a 50 pence chair.

BUT

I thought M&S's email was terrible, really bad. And I don't think a goodwill gesture of free delivery on your next purchase would have gone amiss as they have made the error with the chair twice on the website. Not because they should do, but because it looks good.
but perhaps that attitude is why my business is making a profit and theirs isn't
