One idle google and 10 minutes later dd and I have a pan full for lunch, it's lovely.

It was bad enough finding out about cleaning washing machines, and Veet to unclog hairy plug holes.... and now you failed to tell me this Angry

Well you horrible lot, what else have you being holding out on, and keeping from me?????

While we're on the subject of 'magic' homecare products - perhaps I'd better make sure you all realise that Fairy Liquid does not contain thousands of small magical creatures who scrub your dishes for you. I don't know how they ever allowed such a misleading name to be used.

garlicbutter · 02/03/2012 12:36

Laundry balls = laundry bollocks. Not only are they crap at washing (I had to add 2 scoops of that oxy powder stuff to get a result) but the fuckers break in your machine, leading to an infestation of little white balls in all nooks & crannies near the washer.

On the up side - I'VE JUST TWISTED AN APPLE IN HALF! Grin
Banana fail so far, but I'll try again when they're riper.

garlicbutter · 02/03/2012 12:37

Oh, Grimma :(

You have shattered my dreams. You meanie.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/03/2012 12:46

We have pinky-red staining in our shower too - dh thinks it's because we have high levels of manganese in our water (the water company have said we have this high level of manganese, but it won't harm us). It does clean off pretty easily, though.

stealthsquiggle · 02/03/2012 12:50

LOL Grimma - I was trying to find a nice way of pointing out that anything which works will be killing the mould and therefore, from the mould's PoV, not very "friendly" at all...

DonkeyTeapot · 02/03/2012 13:01

The pink stuff in the shower

Birnamwood · 02/03/2012 14:08

Shit me donkey, I just thought it was manky shampoo Shock

garlicbutter · 02/03/2012 14:18

The water residue round here is red - like the soil. The mould in my bathroom is black. Could be a chic colour scheme, with correct scale/mould management. Perhaps.

DonkeyTeapot · 02/03/2012 14:53

Birnamwood Grim, isn't it? I grab the bleach the second I see it appearing round the bath.

Birnamwood · 02/03/2012 17:49

I scrubbed the shower with domestos grot buster the other day and noticed the pink stuff in the grout and on the hose, glad I did it now and with super thick bleach!

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 02/03/2012 18:08

I've heard that the pink stuff is fluoride build up. It's not lime scale as I have that too (lime scale is white & crunchy)

Ovenclean clean my built in single oven for £30 and will do hob for an extra £10 in ne hampshire.

molepom · 02/03/2012 19:22

Whoever posted the list of WD-40 uses..THANK YOU!

The kids melted a crayon into the rug a couple of years back and it just wouldnt go.

A few sprays of that and it's like new! There's a few stubborn blobs but they are breaking up.

Thank you thank you thank you

CuttedUpPear · 02/03/2012 19:56

Bloody Hell DonkeyTeapot!

GrimmaTheNome · 02/03/2012 20:08

I've heard that the pink stuff is fluoride build up
are any fluoride salts pink? Think its the bacteria (not mere mould as I'd thought)

DonkeyTeapot · 02/03/2012 20:58

I know, it's pretty horrid stuff. Ever had a pack of Philadelphia get pink bits on when it's been open too long? I'm not 100% certain but I believe it's the same stuff. If your Philadelphia grows pink bits, really do not eat it.

Somersaults · 03/03/2012 00:07

Yes I had the wtf moment Honey but it was well worth it! Highly highly recommended!

kickassangel · 03/03/2012 02:22

and those ecover products? do they really clean stuff as well as chemicals do? or do you just end up using loads of it? (not that I do a whole load of dishes)

Honeydragon · 03/03/2012 09:06

Somersaults I suspect you have just responded to my Best Ever Cake Frosting recipe.......but on the wrong thread Grin Grin Grin Grin

Glad you had the wtf moment too Grin

Hahaha! You are absolutely right :o

HomeEcoGnomist · 03/03/2012 15:15

Kickass - I use the Ecover washing up liquid. my very own top tip - well borrowed from either WI or Aggie from How Clean is your House - is dilute your washing up liquid 50/50 with water. It works exactly the same...but means you don't feel homicidal when your mother people use too much of it. and it's cheaper

kickassangel · 04/03/2012 04:43

But does it work as well as things like Fairy? I mean, does science support the claims?

garlicbutter · 04/03/2012 10:15

I'm sure Ecover's manufacturers can give you the science Hmm
But, no, it doesn't work as well as ordinary detergent.
Scientific evidence: The difference between washing up at mine (Aldi detergent) and Mum's (eco-bollocks).

HomeEcoGnomist · 04/03/2012 11:12

Well I haven't noticed it being any less effective TBH

There are a lot more bubbles with 'traditional' brands...which maybe gives the impression that things are cleaner

Jux · 04/03/2012 13:11

Can anyone tell me how to get out lucozade from carpet? TBF, this stain occurred quite a few years ago and I tried tons of things, but nothing really got rid of it. It was clearly sticky despite my rather pathetic attempts at scrubbing it as it is now a horrible dust-coloured mass in the middle of a yellow carpet (never use light carpet in a living room. I hate yellow with a vengeance; dh calls it gold and loves it. Our last house had a gold piss-coloured carpet in the sitting room too. Why did I not learn then, ?

I looked at one of those links thinking I had a strong stomach. I don't Sad

Thank you for everything else though.

Boomerwang · 04/03/2012 13:13

My mother switched to Ecover washing up liquid and immediately went back to Fairy afterwards. It's rubbish. One whiff of a greasy plate and it turns back to clear water and won't budge for any more grease.
