Hello.

As we hope you've already seen, George at Asda were one of the first clothing ranges to sign up to our Let Girls Be Girls campaign.

And now they've phoned us to ask for our help.

The press (who are all over this story today) have contacted Asda to point out that they're selling this T-shirt for girls.

Asda would love to know whether Mumsnetters think it's OK or not.

They say that, as they've signed up to Let Girls Be Girls, they'll take action if we have a negative reaction to the T-shirt.

Please post your comments ASAP - Asda are biting their nails...

I would never buy this for my dd - not overly sexual but sexist

Naff and tacky. Probably can't be classified as 'sexualisation' but why does everything have to be 'gorgeous' or 'cute' or 'princess'? Of course we all think our children are beautiful but it's their inner beauty that we really love. Why is it always, always about physical appearance??

Pushing aside how fugly the outfit is and my hatred of slogans on childrens clothes, I don't like the emphasis on appearance and looks suggested by the word 'gorgeous'.

Ditch it.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/04/2010 20:20

The girls jeans are all too small (and/or low) waisted for my DD. If ASDA was to cut down on silly designs and do some good plain ones in 3 different width fittings they might be onto something.

McDreamy · 14/04/2010 20:22

It's horrible

beautifulgirls · 14/04/2010 20:23

I don't like it, I wouldn't let my girls wear it.

misdee · 14/04/2010 20:23

oh and please please stop the slogans on the bum. hate hate hate it.

10years ago George clothes were lovely for little girls. if they were to change back to good decent clothes, no slogans, then i would reconsider my [personal] boycott.

Wolfcub · 14/04/2010 20:23

It is absolutely hideous and tacky but I don't think it's over sexualising girls. However I agree with Norbert (who I think has one of the best ever MN names) that I don't like the emphasis on appearance.

NorbertDentressangle · 14/04/2010 20:26

Thank you Wolfcub

Misdee -I also hate the logos across the bottom.

pitterpatterfeet · 14/04/2010 20:27

Think it's horrid and tacky but not particularly offensive.

Lizzylou · 14/04/2010 20:28

No, not very nice.
Not overtly sexual, just tacky and not a nice look.

JulesJules · 14/04/2010 20:32

Agree with a lot of other posters. It's really horrible but not over sexualising IMO, although does encourage this obsession with looks.

I also hate things with slogans and the proliferation of pink princessy glittery crap that girls sections are full of. I would prefer plain cheap cotton basics in lots of different colours.

Abundantia · 14/04/2010 20:37

I just don't like it.

I also have trouble with jeans, I have to get dd larger sizes and turn them up. I'd agree that high waisted and different waist sizes in an age size would be good.

There's way too much branded stuff, like HSM, and far too many frills and adornments. Some plain, cheap basics would be good.

Love the towelling beach dresses though!

gothicmama · 14/04/2010 20:40

The general design of the outfit is made to replicate similar adult / late teen fashion. this makes it unsuitable and in the context of this the slogan takes on a different meaning than it would have if say on a plain pink t shirt and matched with more appropriate skirt or trousers

happyland · 14/04/2010 20:41

Hate it, but don't think it's overly sexual. Just hideous and tacky.

KristinaM · 14/04/2010 20:42

i don't like it

dislike emphasis on appearance, for boys or girls

harimo · 14/04/2010 20:46

I wouldn't buy it, but I don't think it's offensive in any way.

But note to asda - I wouldn't buy any slogan t-shirt.

Horton · 14/04/2010 20:56

Horrible. Too much emphasis on looks for a small girl and it's just the thin end of the wedge, really, isn't it? It's not quite as bad as padded bras. I agree with what pretty much everyone else has said about clothes. Please please PLEASE, more practical hard-wearing stuff in unisex colours and less sparkle/glitter for the girls and sludge for the boys.

I wouldn't buy any slogan T-shirt either, btw. It's just tacky, isn't it?

The skirt with braces is beyond hideous, frankly.

ilovepiccolina · 14/04/2010 20:58

Agree with harimo. It's not offensive, but just a bit tasteless, and I wouldn't buy a slogan t-shirts either.

(Apart from 'Fur coats are for beautiful animals and ugly people', back in about 1972 )

Earthymama · 14/04/2010 20:58

Horrid but not sexualised in tone.
I would never buy anything like that so not your target market.

chunglimum · 14/04/2010 21:02

No, I don't like it because it implies that the most important thing about girls is their looks... you wouldn't put it on a 9 yr old boy's t-shirt would you?
