Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

No. Far worse in my opinion is the trashy mags aimed at women with crap like rape and murder and death on the front, very often at the eye height of children.

DharmaLovesDraco · 21/01/2014 17:19

I'd love to see Mumsnet back this campaign. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't back it really.

snowyowl70 · 21/01/2014 17:20

Definitely support it !! My DD1 promoted the Girl Guide Association's support of the campaign and their research found that girls found it demeaning and whilst porn will never disappear having it on demand in a paper left on tables in cafes and trains where young children can access it is not acceptable.

I know this is a bit off topic Onesleep, but have you heard about the Child Eyes campaign? They have reported success on this front on their fb page already, which is great (and I don't see why this issue means MN shouldn't support the no more page 3 campaign):

Until recently the British Retail Consortium (BRC) guidelines for displaying offensive magazines out of sight of children only included Lads' Mags.

After pressure from Child Eyes they now include women's magazines like That's Life, Chat, Love It and Take a Break!

You can now quote BRC guidelines whenever you complain to a retailer. These guidelines were drawn up in response to the government's Bailey Review ("Letting Children Be Children").

The guidelines for "the display of "Lads' Mags" and "Ladies' Mags" that may cause offence" state:

• …Do not display them at children’s eye-level or below, to ensure they are not in the direct sight and reach of children
• …Do not display them adjacent to your display of children’s titles and comics
• …Where display space restraints preclude the above, titles with front covers that may cause concern are part- overlapped with other titles so as to minimise the potential for offence to parents with children.

Yes back it.

It's so awful, so old fashioned. What on earth are we teaching our children if we don't back it?

Onesleeptillwembley · 21/01/2014 17:24

Thanks EMC no, I hadn't. Very interesting.

theyoniwayisnorthwards · 21/01/2014 17:27

Yes please, I'd like to see mumsnet support NMP3.

RedKites · 21/01/2014 17:27

Yes, please back the campaign.

Bambamb · 21/01/2014 17:38

Yes please back the campaign.

ScarletHarridan · 21/01/2014 17:43

I absolutely believe that mumsnet should support this campaign. The fight back against the commodification of women has to start somewhere and this seems as good a place as any because of its ubiquity and place in the national consciousness

redheadbedhead · 21/01/2014 17:45

YES YES AND MORE YES

Apparentlychilled · 21/01/2014 17:47

Yes please.

Onetwothreeoops · 21/01/2014 17:53

Another Yes to add to the voices of reason already posted here.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 21/01/2014 17:59

YES - please back it. I'm surprised you haven't already Wink

ErrolTheDragon · 21/01/2014 18:04

Another yes vote.

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 21/01/2014 18:09

Another yes vote from me. Please back this campaign

AhoyMcCoy · 21/01/2014 18:18

Yes back it.

I was a bit "on the fence" as to whether MN should support it, but Emcwills74 post near the start of the thread has convinced me.

GurlwiththeAnyFuckerCurl · 21/01/2014 18:19

Yes from me as well.

LittleRedDinosaur · 21/01/2014 18:36

Absolutely! Please support it!

SauceForTheGander · 21/01/2014 18:41

Yes emcwill has done some great posts on this thread

emcwill74 · 21/01/2014 18:43

Awwwwww! Blush Thanks! Much appreciated! I'm not an official member of the NMP3 team or anything but this campaign means a lot to me! I was posting on MN about page 3 before the campaign existed!

LizzyLard · 21/01/2014 18:44

I am new and I am biased as I'm involved in the campaign, but I am a Mum of 2 teenagers boy and girl and I grew up with this in my home as a teen and pre-teen. I know first hand the effects that had and I want better. For what it's worth it is therefore a yes from me :)

YankNCock · 21/01/2014 18:45

Yes please.

WalkingWithAGhost · 21/01/2014 18:46

Absolute YES here.

Shockingundercrackers · 21/01/2014 18:46

Yes please. It may seem a silly complaint about the patriarchy, but then hey, aren't they all? Equal pay, protection from domestic violence, genital mutilation... Well each to his own and all that.

It's pernicious. Please help us stop it.
