Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

Yes, yes, yes.

msrisotto · 21/01/2014 18:50

YES please

HorsePetal · 21/01/2014 18:50

I really can't understand why anyone wouldn't back this campaign. Yes please Mumsnet!

extracrunchy · 21/01/2014 18:51

Absolutely yes!! Not sure why there's even a question about it. It's sends the message that women are decorative/a product to be consumed, which is bad enough in porn etc but this is a FAMILY NEWSPAPER - children see it every day!

You know The Sun recently featured the usual boobie pic directly alongside a news story about a woman who had been "forced to have sex" (note - not raped, which would have been correct) and didn't see the irony?

eewop · 21/01/2014 18:53

Yes! Mumsnet should support the campaign.

SarniaCherie · 21/01/2014 18:56

Yes please support it. I signed the petition and joined the FB group a couple of months ago after a fellow MN posted a link.

HorsePetal · 21/01/2014 18:56

Only 132,000 signatures on the petition Sad

I can't remember when I signed it - a few months ago I think and it doesn't seem to have increased massively since then.

CarolineKnappShappey · 21/01/2014 18:56

Yes please

KatherinaMinola · 21/01/2014 18:57

Yes, please support the campaign.

I do find it mindboggling that there are people (even on MN) who don't understand the rationale behind opposing page 3. Should have been banned/outlawed years ago.

KatherinaMinola · 21/01/2014 18:58

The petition itself is rather badly worded, IIRC (juvenile language etc). That may have put many people off signing it.

JustineMumsnet · 21/01/2014 19:02

@ArsePaste

Genuinely can't believe you had to ask this if you should support this. Of course you should, for crying out loud! It will, at least in part, go some way to making up for the utter balls up of a feminist "debate" you had at Blogfest.

We asked for the very reasons stated in my OP ArsePaste - there's been some push back amongst MNetters when the rallying cry's gone up before and we don't back things usually unless there's a clear majority in favour -whatever our private thoughts may be.

@LizzyTish81

YES!! The fact that you ask this question has compelled me to finally actually register with mumsnet instead of just reading the posts. Page 3 is outdated, objectifies women and I think encourages this weird mentality of women as 'birds' whose breast shape, size and appearance you get to rate . . . I want young men and women to focus less on physical appearance, there is so much more to us than that.

Haha! Sucked you in Lizzy [evil cackle]

OP posts:
Yama · 21/01/2014 19:06

Yes, back the campaign.

WhizzFucker · 21/01/2014 19:08

Absolutely yes, no question

JustineMumsnet · 21/01/2014 19:08

@NumanoidNancy

Breatheslowly MN are not running a campaign, I think they are just asking us if we want them to add their name to the long long list of organisations that support the campaign that already exists.

That's exactly right - this wouldn't preclude us from choosing to campaign ourselves on something else, we'd be lending our backing and support to a campaign that's already being run (very effectively) by others.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 21/01/2014 19:10

Yes, absolutely MN should back this. Absolutely.

JustALittleGreen · 21/01/2014 19:12

Yes! Please, please back this campaign!

I haven't read all 9 pages of this thread and I'm sure its been said a thousand times but this is NOT about nudity, its NOT about breasts, it is about sexual objectification! It's about me wanting my daughter to be seen by society as a whole person, rather than a collection of body parts.

For anyone who doesn't know why people would support the campaign, why not have a quick google. Read the blurb on the nmp3 fb page. Educate yourselves. If you still don't agree with it then fair enough but at least you'll know what you're opposing!

So, Erm, in conclusion NO MORE PAGE 3!!

BillyBanter · 21/01/2014 19:15

I'd like to see MN back it.

Blistory · 21/01/2014 19:16

Yes, please support it.

Losing page 3 causes no one any harm whereas retaining it does cause harm.

madammoose · 21/01/2014 19:17

Yes. No place for this in a national newspaper. I don't want my son growing up thinking that the role for women in a newspaper is purely as a decorative bit of titillation.

RandallFloyd · 21/01/2014 19:18

Absolutely. It's a no brainier as far as I can see.

YTK1 · 21/01/2014 19:19

Love Mumsnet, hate media misogyny. Please back No More Page 3 :-)

Honsandrevels · 21/01/2014 19:22

Yes you should back it!

laregina · 21/01/2014 19:23

Absolutely back the campaign. Boobs are not news!

constancesummers · 21/01/2014 19:23

Yes please.
