Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

yes please support it

DownstairsMixUp · 21/01/2014 16:43

Yes please, I signed the campaign. It's about time things changed, women's tits aren't news.

Guesswork · 21/01/2014 16:45

I would like to see mumsnet back this campaign.

Beachcomber · 21/01/2014 16:47

Yes, of course MN should back it.

Confitdecanard · 21/01/2014 16:48

Having read the NMP3 website I think that you should support the campaign.

ohmeohmyforgotlogin · 21/01/2014 16:51

Yes vote from me

CheeseStrawWars · 21/01/2014 16:52

Yes

LizzyTish81 · 21/01/2014 16:54

YES!! The fact that you ask this question has compelled me to finally actually register with mumsnet instead of just reading the posts. Page 3 is outdated, objectifies women and I think encourages this weird mentality of women as 'birds' whose breast shape, size and appearance you get to rate . . . I want young men and women to focus less on physical appearance, there is so much more to us than that.

HorrorCow · 21/01/2014 16:55

Yes, please support this campaign.

clareabouts · 21/01/2014 16:55

Yes, I'd love to see you support the campaign

AwfulMaureen · 21/01/2014 16:57

Yes, please do back this cause. It's so vital that our daughters grow up in a world where women are not objectified. The old argument of "Those women have a right to display their bodies for money" does not hold water....there should be no demand for them to do this...men and women should learn that women's bodies are not to be paid for like any old asset.

flatmum · 21/01/2014 16:58

Yes, of course

scallopsrgreat · 21/01/2014 17:01

Of course. No brainer.

It normalises the sexualisation and objectification of women. It also helps to narrow the definition of what is 'attractive' in a woman. It's racist, sexist shit.

I want to live in a society where it doesn't make sense. This campaign being successful maybe a small step but is a louder message in that direction.

icepole · 21/01/2014 17:01

Yes please support it.

tinkerbellvspredator · 21/01/2014 17:02

I would be very pleased if you backed this campaign also

JacqueslePeacock · 21/01/2014 17:04

Yes, definitely, please support the campaign.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 21/01/2014 17:05

Without necessarily commenting on what I would want Mumsnet to do, I would say that I think that its official support for the NMP3 campaign would entirely consistent with its official position on everyday sexism and other, similar issues.

And there's a difference between supporting a campaign - the equivalent of signing a letter or petition someone else has written - and running a campaign itself. As a supporter it's completely logical and consistent; as a standalone campaign it wouldn't obviously make sense.

happyon · 21/01/2014 17:05

Yes of course

Batfink27 · 21/01/2014 17:07

Delurking to say yes, please support this campaign! It's how it makes it normal for women to be seen as sex objects. Commuting to work on the train every day, people read the Sun while sitting all around me, and I hate hate hate glancing around and seeing sexualised images objectifying women visible everywhere. Ugh. This is exactly the sort of thing a groundswell campaign can stop, and Mumsnet should be totally behind it.

NumanoidNancy · 21/01/2014 17:10

Also it is worth pointing out that whereas campaigns against FGM etc can be celebrity endorsed and gain a lot of extra leverage that way the NoMorePage3 campaign is going directly up against Murdoch and Dinsmore, two of the most powerful men in the media. It would be media suicide for individual 'names' to support it openly, even though many do behind the scenes. It just has to be 'ordinary' men and women that do this.

breatheslowly · 21/01/2014 17:11

I understand that there is a limit to the number of campaigns that MN can run, so I am curious about what is not being selected if this one is. I also think that the tabloid press has so much wrong with it when it comes to women that I feel this is a very small part of a much bigger problem. Women seem to be bodies, incubators and mothers and not much else in the tabloid world. But I certainly would like to see an end to page 3.

Slubberdegullion · 21/01/2014 17:14

Yes.

NumanoidNancy · 21/01/2014 17:15

Breatheslowly MN are not running a campaign, I think they are just asking us if we want them to add their name to the long long list of organisations that support the campaign that already exists.

StealthPolarBear · 21/01/2014 17:15

Wrote a long post and lost it. I think it's harmful to boys and girls to grow up in an environment where women are reduced to breasts. Yes please do back it.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 21/01/2014 17:16

DH has just pointed out his thoughts for why the s*n wont get rid of pg3. Apparently they print their corrections on pg2...
