Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

Unless that becomes part of the debate then getting rid of Page 3 is a hollow victory as many of the reasons it existed in the first place will remain. I'd like to see the no more Page 3 to be seen as the start of a wider debate rather than just a single issue that once resolved is then forgotton about.

MostWicked · 27/01/2014 20:47

I want to see the end of Page 3 topless models in the newspapers because it is the wrong place for them and their portrayal is demeaning to women.
I also want to see the end of photoshopped perfections - clothed or not.
But I have no desire to see the end of all published nudity, it just needs to be in the appropriate places and needs to show real models.

Creeping · 27/01/2014 21:27

Funny that, how wanting to start a debate about the complex issues that cause P3 to exist at all, can somehow be seen as be an argument against the NMP3 campaign. For me, it is a reason to support it. The fact that we're having this thread is evidence that the debate you want has started. Ironically, the NMP3 campaign is actually achieving what you say it isn't.
So thanks for your input in this debate, because with you, Blue and LeBFG, I certainly hope that this is just the beginning of addressing the way women are presented in the media, providing unnecessary and even harmful role models for girls. It should all change, and it starts with an awareness that something should not be acceptable any longer.

This might have already, been said, but I'd like Mn to support the campaign and use the word 'breasts' instead of 'norks'

Lottiedoubtie · 28/01/2014 08:04

Please back the campaign.

perplexedpirate · 28/01/2014 08:09

Yes. Please do back it. I've already signed.

happyoverhere · 28/01/2014 10:06

Absolutely agree with Chrisina Rossetti, who on earth thought that "norks" was an appropriate word, use the correct word, its "breasts".

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 28/01/2014 10:32

Norks is quite a mumsnetty word, though, I can see why they used it.

Starballbunny · 28/01/2014 10:56

Norks is gently poking fun at ourselves, usually on style and beauty. Breasts sounds awfully formal.

I avoid tits because my DSIS finds it offensive and I wonder from the coining of Norks here if other women do too?

HoratiaDrelincourt · 28/01/2014 11:43

I think it's deliberate - we aren't prim about breasts in general, we just think photos of them in a "newspaper" is gratuitous.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 28/01/2014 11:48

I can't think of MN using any word other than norks tbh Hmm Grin

Also shows a sense of humor..not just "those miserable women wanting to censor our ability to look at boobs"

1gglePiggle · 30/01/2014 19:49

No I do not think we should ban page 3. My nan has always bought the Sun and as a child I would see page 3 and giggle. My nan would tell me off for giggling and say there's nothing wrong with looking at the human body. Also there are no fake boobs on page 3 which I think is an important point.
Like others have said, there's a lot more worthy campaigns that could be promoted rather than this. Gives mumsnet a bad name really as a bunch of moaners Grin

KayHarker1 · 30/01/2014 19:54

MN already has a rep as a Bunch of moaners. Might as well get some mileage out of it.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 30/01/2014 21:25

If page 3 were worried about the promoting the beauty of the natural human body for everyone to appreciate.. it wouldn't only show large breasted teenagers. It would show a diversity of sexes, ages, sizes and colors.

But it pretty much just sticks to white big boobed teenagers. I feel like they have a specific demographic they are trying to appeal to.

ziptoes · 30/01/2014 21:40

Yes. Please do support it.

NorksAreMessy · 30/01/2014 22:15

'Norks' is the perfect word Blush. I had never seen it before I used MN and (obviously) love it.

Shamelessly self-promoting in order to bump this thread

BIWI · 30/01/2014 22:23

Goodness there are some dense people on this thread

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 30/01/2014 22:47

Bumping again to that I've been quoted on the official hq page. Been here for eons and thats the first time :)

areujoyful · 31/01/2014 01:05

OH PLEASE!
Page 3 is there for a bunch of dirty old men to ogle, and objectify women. Nudity isn't the issue here, it's the fact that the boobs are purely for men to drool and do other "things" over. Seeing women as a body and not an intelligent person; there is a total lack of respect for women, pure misogyny. It's pathetic and outdated. I'll support this all the way!! I want
GO MUMSNET GO!!

MrsZuko · 05/02/2014 12:17

God yes, please back the campaign!

WhoPutThatThere · 05/02/2014 13:47

Even though MN has now already come out and officially endorsed the NMP3 campaign, I just want to add another YES to the vote.

I'm already a supporter of NMP3 (I donated to their fundraising to sponsor CTLFC's team kit) and think the campaign is a great way to address sexism in society through the targeting of something specific, which has a clear, achievable objective rather than just a nebulous 'down with sexism' campaign. And if The Sun does the right thing and elects to stop Page 3 in the face of public opinion we will be one step further down the road to combating sexism and can turn our attention to the specific case, which all has the end result of chipping away at outdated attitudes.

badgeroncaffeine · 05/02/2014 13:52

Surely it's up to people whether or not they want to be page 3 models? I think a lot of the opponents know they would never have been selected and are jealous of the money of those who have.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 05/02/2014 13:56

What BIWI said Grin

BIWI · 05/02/2014 13:59
paperdress · 05/02/2014 14:02
