Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

@TheNightIsDark

I think there's more important things to campaign about. FGM, childcare costs, more support for MH awareness and losing the stigma and the increasing pressure on children to be older than they are (make up, video games etc.)

Not to mention from the campaign I've seen (the SN one) they seem to run a bit on here but I've never seen one in a newspaper or magazine where it could reach people and have an effect.

Hi there TheNightIsDark, not wanting to go off on a side track, but you can read more about our most recent campaigns here. Quite a few do get a fair bit of press coverage (print, radio, other sites) which helps us reach others that might want to campaign on the issue, and importantly those that might be able in a position to respond to our campaigns.

Keep your eyes peeled for something on childcare costs later in the week.

@ArsePaste

Genuinely can't believe you had to ask this if you should support this. Of course you should, for crying out loud! It will, at least in part, go some way to making up for the utter balls up of a feminist "debate" you had at Blogfest.

We asked for the very reasons stated in my OP ArsePaste - there's been some push back amongst MNetters when the rallying cry's gone up before and we don't back things usually unless there's a clear majority in favour -whatever our private thoughts may be.

@LizzyTish81

YES!! The fact that you ask this question has compelled me to finally actually register with mumsnet instead of just reading the posts. Page 3 is outdated, objectifies women and I think encourages this weird mentality of women as 'birds' whose breast shape, size and appearance you get to rate . . . I want young men and women to focus less on physical appearance, there is so much more to us than that.

Haha! Sucked you in Lizzy [evil cackle]

@NumanoidNancy

Breatheslowly MN are not running a campaign, I think they are just asking us if we want them to add their name to the long long list of organisations that support the campaign that already exists.

That's exactly right - this wouldn't preclude us from choosing to campaign ourselves on something else, we'd be lending our backing and support to a campaign that's already being run (very effectively) by others.
I wish someone from Mumsnet could explain why certain newspapers were not considered in the brilliant Lads Mag campaign? Just one example 26th Aug 2013 on the front page of a certain national newspaper, a third of the page devoted to Abbey Clancy in her bikini below the headline 'Have you seen Abbey's pussy?' She had lost her cat. Bearing in mind the soft porn content on page 3 of this NEWSpaper, I see various similarities.

Yes I can gritts - that particular campaign stemmed from the Let Girls be Girls campaign which was all about children being exposed to prematurely sexualising images/messaging. It sought to remove lads' mags - the covers of which were frequently pretty pornographic - from kids' eye view not to remove lad's mags per se, encouraging retailers to insist on modesty covers or move them to the top shelf out of the direct eye-line of children. The idea was that parents couldn't do anything to stop their kids being exposed to those images - whether they chose to purchase the mags or not.

The argument re NMP3 goes a step further than Let girls be girls/ lads mags did - it's not just about young children being exposed to things, it's about the effect on women/children/society as a whole of sexist/ objectifying images appearing daily in a hugely popular newspaper.

Hello all,
Think the response is pretty clear that we should get right behind this; which is great, and we will.

We'll say so publicly as loud as possible tomorrow, put some more information on the campaign up and also ask David Dinsmore, Sun editor, on for a webchat.

For those who haven't, you can sign the petition here.

Do let us know if you have any thoughts about other things we could do collectively to raise awareness/ increase the pressure.

Thanks for all the input.

Hey everyone, just popping on to post various links which will hopefully prove useful:

Here's our page on backing the campaign (it's currently at the top of our homage) with Justine's quote:
'The implication of Page 3 is pretty clear: men make the news, and women stand next to the news in their pants. This isn't what Mumsnet users want for their daughters - or their sons.'
Here's the No More Page 3 site and the petition (realise these have been posted upthread, but thought it might be useful to gather everything in one place).

We've also tweeted about our support, and posted on Facebook - please do RT and/or like/share to spread the word!

Hopefully there'll be more to come in days to come - meantime, do shout if you think of anything more we ought to be doing to support the campaign Smile
