Challenge the Proposed CSA changes

Could we talk about having some sort of campaign to bring awareness (and hopefully some action) for the many thousands of lone parents who are receiving pitifully small sums of money, or nothing at all, from the NRP?

I have been reading about the proposed changes here and I'm HORRIFIED!

I was on a thread recently here where many posters shared their sad tales about feckless NRP being asked to pay pennies per day for their children - and still not receiving even these pathetic amounts.

It seems that the CSA is a fairly toothless beast.

On a personal level, I have recently claimed for my two children (14 and 11) after nearly 10 years of no financial (or any other!) support.

My X refused to answer any of the CSA letters requesting salary information. He is self employed and therefore impossible for the CSA to get access to his income (although they do ask the Inland Revenue for previous accounts - in my X's case he hasn't submitted returns). Eventually an order was placed on him for £40.00 / week. Should the Inland Revenue not now be investigating why he hasn't paid any tax in the last few years? Surely this should be automatic?

He has not paid. I contacted the CSA today to ask what was happening with my case and was informed that they can't start court proceedings until the arrears mount up to £500.00 or 13 weeks worth of non payment.

The point of this is that, I'm used to it! I scrape by on my wages and we're fine - but what if we weren't?

What if I needed that £40.00 to feed our children?

I'm hoping that others will come onto this thread with ideas of what form this campaign should take - and also to maybe confirm the vague feeling I have that lone parents are going to be asked to contribute towards the CSA's work via their maintenance payments. (I may have this wrong)

Let's try and change this shall we? Or at least make a stand?

Shirley your blog post is going viral on the web. Take heart. It may be a slow burn but there's real merit in your petition.

I think you need to think of the angles that will attract people:

The Tories will be pleased if absent parents are coughing up instead of tax payers.

Less right wingers will be pleased because it is getting money to those who need it.

The only losers are the NRPs. The losers who don't pay for their children.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 02/12/2011 21:25

Don't lose heart shirley, you're doing a sterling job. Problem with child support issues is, like so many issues, most people don't care about something unless it's applicable to them. So people in happy couples, those without kids yet etc probably won't give it more than a quick glance. It's a shame really, because all couples with kids need to realise that they are only one step away from becoming two single parents. All it takes is adultery, DV, unreasonable behaviour or just nothing left in common, and a couple may split, leaving them in a similar situation to the single parents on here.

ShirleyKnot · 02/12/2011 21:29

Thank you, both of you.

Literal ones

I want to make a difference here. So much.

KateMiddIeton · 02/12/2011 21:36

You are. You are making a difference.

SKWK makes a great point. Many people don't think it's relevant to them. I'm fortunate to be in a good relationship but I have my eyes open and although I don't know what it's like I can listen and I can empathise as a human being.

It needs to be real to people. It may not be through direct experience but they need to think about their friends, their family. Other people.

flippinada · 02/12/2011 21:36

I'll sign Shirley.

I had an awful time with the CSA. They were worse than bloody useless. After months of stress. I contacted my MP and things improved a little after that but not much.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 02/12/2011 21:36

Have signed the e-petition. Just... FFS.

I mean, most politics-type debates on MN have two sides fighting it out; but there is no other side to this (though nice try, waitingfornaru Grin) The NRP just has no excuse! Just can't believe we live in a world where it's OK to walk away from your kids without a backwards glance.

flippinada · 02/12/2011 21:40

Where's the link, and what can I do to help?

ShirleyKnot · 02/12/2011 21:40

Thank You.

I know that many mumsnetters would be included and affected by these changes.

I'm not giving up - We're on a slow burn I think...

OP posts:
ShirleyKnot · 02/12/2011 21:44

Flippinada - you're here!

Your presence on this thread helps me to push this campaign to MNHQ.

Thank you Thanks

You can sign an e-petition to treat child support the same as student loans (ie as part of your tax code) here

TheMouseRanUpTheClock · 02/12/2011 21:46

I have posted on your AIBU, the Stepmum posting so early in the thread was a shame, it may turn good though with her posts.

The epetition has been confirmed on my email now.

forkful · 02/12/2011 21:48

ShirleyKnot - don't be despondent. This issue is often talked about on MN. There must be others who support this. heads off to AIBU to round up all those who don't agree with feminism and open their eyes to what is going on in 2011

CatherineMacauley · 02/12/2011 21:48

Have just signed your e-petition. As I said on the other thread you have my total support. I think MN is the ideal organization to launch such a campaign. I don't think they should event honk twice about it.

ShirleyKnot · 02/12/2011 21:52

Event honk?

Grin

HA!

I'm OK - Let's just get this campaign moving! It's not about me - it's about those women like me in 2013.

We need to stick up for them.

OP posts:
TheMouseRanUpTheClock · 02/12/2011 21:55

The laws they will be bringing in regarding this issue, could very well still be in force when our dc are parents!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 02/12/2011 22:00

I wrote something on your AIBU thread that hit a nerve and made me think - the angle for the campaign could be something like 'No Excuses, No Escape'. After all, there is no excuse for not paying child support and there should be no escape from it.

ivykaty44 · 02/12/2011 22:03

what really gets me is that the CSA even when the NRP is paying - make hugh big f*ckups

I have had a cheque from the CSA as they gave away - yes gave away the money they took from my ex's wages...to another woman with the same surname.

The CSA wrote to my ex and myself telling me he no longer worked and so therefore I wouldn't be getting any more money. my ex didn't know anything about not having a job and neither did his boss. My ex rang them and tried on this occasion to sort things out as he didn't want any more arrears.

The CSA have told me twice they have left messages on my answer phone - I don't have an answer phone or voice mail. I actually asked had they got the correct file open as if they did have the correct file open it was lies and if they didn't have the correct file open why not as we have been through security.

Sheer incompetence and they don't have to answer to anyone, so it doesn't matter if they don't collect t money or they do they still get paid. they will be disbanded and then re instated - same people same sheer incompetence

TheMouseRanUpTheClock · 02/12/2011 22:04

I can't believe that there are still those myths of poor nrp living on next to nothing and greedy ex's demanding money, the language, demanding... the child is legally entitled to it, the ex is not DEMANDING! and people who don't know about this issue are falling for that claptrap!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 02/12/2011 22:05

And thinking of what KateMiddleton said earlier, 'No Excuses, No Escape' sounds quite 'Tory'. I can just see Dave coming out with just such a media-friendly soundbite on a TV interview Grin.

TheMouseRanUpTheClock · 02/12/2011 22:08

Brain storm, something with say Robin Hood, robing kids....???? you know the rhyme, robin hood, robin hood, riding through the glens, robin hood, robin hood with his merry men, should he retreat back to sherwood, course he should, course he should, robin hood.... change the words?

ColonelBrandon · 02/12/2011 22:20

Have signed - totally worthy aim. Currently my exH pays an entirely voluntary but generous sum, but that could so easily change

Can I just say you have to trawl the thread to find the link to the online petition, don't know if it can be made any easier to locate?

ShirleyKnot · 02/12/2011 22:23

TBH the thread is a mess!

I started shouting about the general inequity and then discovered the horrible reality of the new charges.

OP posts:
GalaxyAddict · 02/12/2011 22:27

Count me in, I am sick of the useless Muppets at the CSA. I get a grand total of NIL a week, even though ex just brought a £70k car!

dancingmustard · 02/12/2011 22:28

It's a sick world we live in when a single parent has to pay to get child support.

It's obviously designed to put lone parents off claiming.

perceptionreality · 02/12/2011 22:37

This whole thing makes me angry. I've spent 2 years having to chase up my payments every single month because my childrens' father's employer didn't bother to send it to the CSA.

In the last few months they have started sending it on time (probably shouldn't speak too soon!)

And now they are going to bugger it all up.

It boils down to the fact the the tories have nothing but contempt for lone parents and is totally unfair. Why should the RP have to pay anything? Particularly when the money has already been taxed ffs.

MInd you, I disagree with most of what they have done so far.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 02/12/2011 22:39

I've signed Shirley. Fully behind this campaign. I like the No excuses, no escape theme.
