Just found out 3 babies in there.... in shock

Hi - I've just got back from an 8 week scan, to discover that there are 3 babies! One baby looked correct size and a clear heartbeat, but the other two were smaller and couldn't see heartbeats. This may be because they are further away and the internal scan couldn't get a good view. We have an appointment with the specialist on Thursday morning to get it confirmed, and see if any / all of the babies are viable.

We also have a DD who is nearly 2 years old. Blimey, life could be different than we'd envisaged....

Sorry, I'm not sure what advice I'm after, just in shock really. Anyone else got triplets and a 2 year old and find it the best thing in the world?!?!

Hi cakebuddy,

I'm expecting triplets too! I'm 14 weeks and expecting two identicals and a singleton. All are looking great and are the same size with small nuchals. They suspect all boys! I already have a DD who is 15 months.

I think we've got a rollercoaster ahead of us as our identicals (like all identicals)are at risk of twin to twin syndrome so I'm having fortnightly scans to monitor things.
Apart from that all is well, I'm trying not to think about the 'how will I cope' just yet...

Good luck with your pregnancy.

CakeBuddy · 30/11/2009 20:24

@ Lady - thank you for the message and congratulations on your news! Were they naturally conceived too? Ours were a total surprise and are non-identical BGG triplets, which seem to be growing at the same rate (thanks to each having their own placenta, I guess) and are all the same size as a singleton baby would be at this stage (18 weeks). We've had regular scans and everything seems to be going well so far. I just need to start taking things easier, but like you also have a toddler to chase around all day! We should keep in touch and help each other through the shocker that is bound to be headed our direction!

@ Twinsnikki - congratulations to you too, how far along are you now, or how old are your triplets?

I'm finding MN to be an amazing source of help and reassurance, so thank you all for your messages. I will keep coming back to update you all on my little cupcakes!

Hi, just read thread. Hope cupcakes and family are all wel. Such a lovely thread

verytellytubby · 22/12/2009 20:39

Hope everything is going well. I only have ID twin boys and a DD.

CakeBuddy · 05/01/2010 12:36

UPDATE:

Okay, so how are we counting pregnancy? I'm 22+4, which makes me 23 weeks pregnant? Anyhoo, just got back from a scan today and all three cupcakes are still happy and healthy - yippee!! Getting ever closer to the 26 week milestone. The two girls are laying next to each other with their heads together (I think they're gossiping!) and the boy is upside down showing them his bottom. Charming. He's already just like his daddy!

One slight worry this week is my friend's daughter who we see ALL the time has just come out with chicken pox and I've never had it and as far as we can tell I have no immunity to it. So we've taken some blood to test for chicken pox virus in my system. But I've been told that really only dangerous times for the babies are before 20 weeks and then around the time of the birth, so I don't think there's any real cause for concern even if I were to get it at this stage. Plus, even if I did, the treatment would be an antibody infusion, and I'm having my last one of those to dilute my dangerous Lupus antibodies on Monday anyway. Job done.

Oh, and I've put on a total of 6kg so far this pregnancy, over 2kg of which has been in the last fortnight. Too much christmas cake maybe?!

We've had MIL to stay this weekend so I could relax a bit, and she did ALL the ironing! Seriously, there was maternity clothes from my last pregnancy at the bottom of the EU ironing pile that I never quite got as far down to finish. Lazy me! She even babysat DD1 on Saturday evening so DH and I could go out for dinner!

I was given a book for Christmas written by stand up comedian Jackie Clunes called 'Extreme Motherhood: Expecting Triplets' and have just finished reading it. It's very funny, and certainly the first 23 weeks of her pregnancy sound very familiar so I feel a little more forewarned about what may be to follow. Yikes!

Hope all your baby bumps are growing nicely and you're enjoying your pregnancies! x

Congratulations on your triplets - wow!

I just wanted to say that my son had chicken pox when i was pregnant, and I have never had it. When they did a blood test, they found I had the anitbodies - apparently lots of people (70%? 80%? who have never had chicken pox have been exposed to it and thus have the antibodies. Neither DH or I have got it despite all four of our DCs getting over the last decade, so chances are you will be fine!

SplitPea · 05/01/2010 23:05

Thanks for the update - I was wondering how you're getting on

I'm another one who has never had chickenpox despite being exposed to it. I had to have my blood checked when I was working in health care and they found that I have the antibodies. Try not to worry too much

CakeBuddy · 29/01/2010 19:11

UPDATE:

Been for 27 week scan today - can't believe it's going so quickly! Delighted to find that all three babies are healthy and now medically viable at 900grams (approx 2lbs) each. I read a magazine article today about a lady whose quads were born at this size and weight and survived healthily, so that gives me great comfort. Not that we want to meet them for hopefully another 6-8 weeks....!!

The only slight thing is that because I'm getting such pains in my pubic bones (I'm not sure if it's SPD?) the doctors have said that I need to ask for help, and if a mum doesn't come and stay by the time of our next appointment then they'll keep me in hospital. Having someone here for the weekend is one thing, but the thought of a mum or MIL for the rest of my pregnancy feels pretty intense. But as we live abroad I know we realistically need full time help with DD1, and both mums have offered to help so I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet - wish me luck!!

If you have any time to read, get hold of 'Extreme Motherhood, the Triplet Diaries' by Jackie Clune, she had triplets when her DD was under 2. Lots of ideas and also humorous.

How is it going, CakeBuddy?

CakeBuddy · 04/03/2010 20:29

Sorry for not updating recently - thank you for your messages!

We start week 32 tomorrow, and have been in hospital since last Tuesday on bed rest and TLC (the German system obviously operates similar to the Swiss!) Baby girl number 2 was showing signs of distress and wasn't growing as quickly as the other two, but the last scan showed improvement which is great news. We're having CTGs twice a day and scans and doppler readings twice a week, next one being tomorrow. At the last check, baby 1 and 3 were 1.5kg each and baby 2 catching up at 1.36g. Looks like I'll be here until they're born and you're absolutely right, we just need to keep them inside for as long as possible - I know I should try and enjoy the rest as it's going to get a lot busier when they arrive!

We're on fortnightly nanna rotations to look after DD1 and although they're both driving us insane, both mums are being fantastic and incredibly supportive (if over-opinionated and bossy, but that's another post!).

I think we've even decided on names.....!!!

You definitely get extra Granny points being a multiple birth granny. Mine's been milking it for 4 yrs now lol!

MultiTaskingMum · 23/03/2010 22:27

Hi,
Not sure where you've got up to now, guess you haven't much time to browse MN with your new little ones and DD1. I had DS1 aged 4 & DD1 aged 2 when DDs 2,3,& 4 arrived! I spent the last 10days in hospital (reading). the girls were delivered at 36 weeks, all between 4-5lb and home at 7days old - that's 9years ago!
Hope you are coping ok - Good Luck!!

AnnaOD · 08/05/2010 19:46

CakeBuddy - it's ages since you posted... you may evern have had your three by now. My girls were born at 28 weeks +4 days. Early due to an infection in my singleton's placenta. Spent 9.5 weeks in NICU/SCBU. Thankfully all three fighting fit, just teeny tiny. First year has been busy but incredible. Managed to breastfeed til they were 7 months. Began formula top ups when they were a few months old as couldn't keep up with demand. Good luck!
