Just found out 3 babies in there.... in shock

Hi - I've just got back from an 8 week scan, to discover that there are 3 babies! One baby looked correct size and a clear heartbeat, but the other two were smaller and couldn't see heartbeats. This may be because they are further away and the internal scan couldn't get a good view. We have an appointment with the specialist on Thursday morning to get it confirmed, and see if any / all of the babies are viable.

We also have a DD who is nearly 2 years old. Blimey, life could be different than we'd envisaged....

Sorry, I'm not sure what advice I'm after, just in shock really. Anyone else got triplets and a 2 year old and find it the best thing in the world?!?!

wow! how fantastic!

i would love to be pg with triplets just for the sheer shock factor when telling people...i bet you'll have plenty of jaws dropping...

wishing you a long (but not too long!!) and healthy pregnancy.

Hi. congratulations!!!

My friend managed to breastfeed triplets exclusively. They got them on a routine in scbu where she would b-feed two together and then give the third both breasts (like a singleton) afterwards. If you end up in scbu, you need to be expressing about 12 times a day to have a ny hope of producing enough for 3, but it can be done. I also know someone who expressed for 2 out of the 3 (though this seems harder to me, much easier to feed from the breast directly).

the thing is to give it a go and give them as much breastmilk as you can. A lot of Mums b-feed 2 and formula feed 3rd, then rotate every feed (how you remember I have know idea, you'd have to take copious notes I spose)

Anyway, I'm a breastfeeding peer support counsellor and b-fed twins exclusively, plus deal with all the multiple birth breastfeeders in my area. Just post here and me or Mars will catch up with you

Congratulations

I have worked with new born triplets and although it is very tiring, it is also very rewarding.

Do you have much support where you are? Get as many people as you can to help even if it's just a few hours so that you can catch up on sleep!

Disenchanted3 · 30/09/2009 13:36

Wow Congratulations!!

If you end up back in the UK you should look into 'home start' a service run by surestart in which volunteers come and help you with your babies / house work / shopping

neenz · 01/10/2009 21:50

Hi Cakebuddy - congratulations!! Just being nosey but were you on Clomid or did it happen naturally?

I do NOT recommend reading Jackie Clune's book 'Extreme Motherhood' - you will have a heart attack!!

I only have twins, but I know triplets tend to go to about 35 weeks and are pretty much always delivered by CS. I BF my twins and it was hard but possible, I recommend the La Leche League Book - 'Mothering Multiples' - it is excellent and gives tips on how to BF twins, triplets or quads!

oooggs · 01/10/2009 21:58

fantastic news and welcome to the wonderful world of multiples . I also only have twins and an older child, and a younger one (5.9, 2.5, 2.5 & 8 mths).

Wishing you losts of rest and pop over to the regular thread - plenty of mad mums to ask and triplets might even be able to remember back to when her 3 were small

Cadelaide · 01/10/2009 22:00

Congratulations Cakebuddy on your 3 little cupcakes

CantThinkofFunnyName · 01/10/2009 22:08

Wow - incredible news. I have only ever carried singletons so cannot offer any advice etc but just wanted to pop on by and offer my congratulations. Such a nice story to read before bed!

CakeBuddy · 02/10/2009 07:48

Thank you for your messages - gotta love mumsnet! You both made me laugh saying you 'only have twins' would have had me reaching for the blood pressure monitor this time last month before we found out about the three wee ones!

No, I wasn't taking any medication, hormones or other treatments, these babies are just luck!

Thank you also for the book recommendations and warnings! I've not bought anything like that yet, suppose I'm waiting for the nuchal scans etc at the end of the month before tempting fate. Bit superstitious maybe....

@ Cadelaide - I love the term 'cupcakes' that's fab, might adopt it as 'triplets' still sounds a bit overwhelming!

Yeah cupcakes is cute

Wow completely natural - that is amazing! Another personal q (please ignore if you don't want to answer it!) - how old are you? Multiples are more common in 'older' women apparently.

Jackie Clune in her book said she did not meet one other woman who was pg with triplets completely naturally, all of them had had ivf or clomid. So it is very rare - you are very speceial

CakeBuddy · 02/10/2009 20:51

You're fine to ask, I am 30 years old. And DH often tells me I'm special....!!!

Lilyloooohhhh · 02/10/2009 21:25

wow great if not somewhat exhausting news

Fitzy72 · 04/10/2009 21:54

Hi there,
many congratulations to you - they are a blessing.

I have 3 month old triplets and a 3 year old and please do not be as scared as i was when i found out as it is not as bad as you work yourself up that it will be.
we made it to 32 weeks and the babies spent 6 weeks in NICU. you will prob have a section as it is thought to be the safest option. re feeding - i expressed while they were in hospital and have ff since they came home.
i recommend Jackie Clunes book - you will feel that it was written for you. it is a reassuring if a bit scary read.
the most difficult bit is the small practicalities - the buggy, car !!, dressing them etc. my advice would be don't worry about it all at once and take things as they come.
above all enjoy the experience.

CakeBuddy · 05/10/2009 16:01

@ Fitzy - thank you for the message. It's great to hear form someone else who has triplets and a little one, especially when you're so positive too, thank you! I'll take a look at the book recommendation, thank you, and will keep you posted. If I have any questions do you mind if I post them here.....?

happy to answer any questions you have - would love to help where i can.
am off now to feed some babies...............!!

instantfamily · 08/10/2009 08:19

Hi and big congratulations!,

I only have triplets, no other babies, but I do recommend for you to get/accept as much help as possible. in hindsight I am particularly happy that i had organized nighttime help from the day they left hospital.
i expressed for 6 months - 1,5 litres per day - it can be done. i couldn't bf because kids were in nicu for 3 weeks and then didn't have strength to suck at breast - or i didn't have patience to see it through.
i also found tripletconnection.org very useful - very american and sometimes a bit over the top but also a lot of useful info.

good luck to you and rest now - you'll need it later.

CakeBuddy · 08/10/2009 10:31

Really, you "only" have triplets! Wow I'm still totally getting over the shock of finding out and still giggle nervously when people say things like that!

Thank you so much for the website tip, I'll check it out. And well done you for BF'ing and expressing so well for so long, 1.5 litres per day is amazing!

Both mums have offered to come and stay for a few weeks each, but as we live abroad it would mean them coming and staying the duration rather than being able to pop in and out. I know it sounds silly, but I'm nervous that if they do come, that I'll never get used to doing it on my own, and won't get to enjoy the babies without the grannies adding their opinion every two seconds (which they would!) But then maybe I don't have the luxury of choice in the matter with DD1 to look after as well, especially if the babies are going to be in hospital for a while...

Aarrrrggggghhhh driving myself in potty circles of indecision. Maybe I should wait until nearer the time before obsessing about details!

can you afford paid help? i love my mil but not everybody wants the grannies around up close, i understand. on the other hand, they could be great to take care of your older dd.
where are you? i have a book from the tripletconnection i could mail you if you think it might be of help. can you send me a private message somehow?

MarsLady · 09/10/2009 23:20

Wow! Congratulations.

legspinner · 16/10/2009 08:06

Congratulations CakeBuddy, very exciting!
Don't know directly of anyone in your situation, but know of someone (friend of a friend) who had a boy just under 2 yrs when she had her 3 boys (4 boys under 2!!!)They live on a farm so are quite isolated. She accepted all the help she could and made use of the local multiple births club too plus the Govt. subsidy that helps with support for care of multiples (we are in NZ, not sure if they have that in the UK, but worth investigating). She had a lot of family support, which really helped.
Congrats again and take care

Fitzy72 · 23/10/2009 22:58

Hi cakebuddy - how are you getting on?
over the shock yet???

I can't stop smiling, it's such a relief! And guess what, it's 2 girls and a boy. Yippeeeeeee!!!!!
