Morning! Thanks for ds1s birthday wishes, he had a good day but so unlike any other birthday before - no presents, no birthday outing! He does have an impressive stash of cash now though, and it is burning a hole in his pocket!

Bubby, I'm afraid I don't have much advice - ours all get a pound each week from the ILs and ds1 gets three but we rarely give them money ourselves. They do get money for trips and quite often I give the older two money from my purse if they are going to the shops with their friends. Ds1s school have a cashless system for dinners so we just top up online and when it's gone it's gone! Show him my post if you like, I bet he would feel quite rich compared to my 12 year old Wink. If it was me I would probably stop pocket money too for a while.

Dd1 and ds2 are away on a school trip so I don't even have to do the school run today! The novelty still hasn't worn off although I do not really know what I am supposed to do with myself! I have, since yesterday, caught up on the washing and changed all their beds and given the rooms a quick tidy. I suppose I should take the opportunity to vacuum while I can still see the carpet Grin.

J is home sick today, and have had a serious talk, with no-one else present. He has admitted taking the money and has promised not to do it again, He got tearful and embarrased, and has given me back £6 that he had left and hidden away. He has also agreed a chore list again, we used to have one, but it seems to have gone by the wayside lately,(dont know how long this will last, but I can but try!). DH and I have also talked about the pocket money situation, and have agreed to give them a set amount of £5 a week, as, up to now, it has been on an "as you need it" basis, which could often add up to more than we realise.I have also agreed to £3 for school dinners twice a week, and packed lunches the rest of the time he has packed lunch with no extra money for snacks etc. If he wants those, he will have to use the pocket money. bagpuss I wish they would have the cashless system here, it would make things so much easier!

Well done Bubbs that sounds very fair to me. Only one of mine has school dinner, he has £3 a day, just glad the other two dont want it as I just couldnt afford it! Just feel at my age that I have been doing packed lunches forever! Did anyone watch the Great British Bake Off final tonight? I was very surprised at the winner, but glad for him out of the three, feel bereft now its finished:-(
Sleep tight xx

Happy Birthday Bubby!!

Oh yes I know that 'treadmill' Rubester - its not a great place.

Lew got a glowing report at his first parents night Smile

Tom has his first 'advanced Maths' GCSE paper today....he grunted at me when I woke him up, grunted at me when he went through the front door - then shouted back 'Love you Mam' half way up the street Grin

bagpuss · 17/10/2012 09:20

Happy birthday Bubby! Thanks and Wine for you. Glad you managed to sort things out with J. What a result with the birthday pressie too!

Hey Ruby! Long time no see, hope you and yours are all ok.

Apologies, chops, I didn't see your post before on account of the fact that I was up so early that I couldn't actually see all the posts through my bleary eyes. I'm on about my fifth coffee already.

I'm in washing Hell today after realising that I'd have to clear the backlog before ds2 gets home this evening with a suitcase full of muddy stuff. Dd1 not home until Friday thankfully!

Shabs, GCSEs already? How time flies!

Chopstheduck · 17/10/2012 09:25

shabbatheGreek · 17/10/2012 11:40

Bagpuss - yes he leaves borstal his 'lovely' High school next Easter!!!! He did his Maths GCSE a year ago when he was in year 10 - the school 'fast track' some of the kids. He managed to get a B and thought that he would get away with having to do another GCSE Maths paper LOL...Oh no, his teacher, in her wisdom, has started them on Advanced Maths course I cant understand one single question on the papers!!

triplets · 17/10/2012 12:34

Happy Birthday Bubbs :):):):):):)
My James is doing a gcse english paper today, yes where dooes the time go to? Just home from school myself, it had to chuck it down the two minutes it took me to the bus stop!

shabbatheGreek · 17/10/2012 12:51

Well done James....hope it goes well for him Trips xxx

shabbatheGreek · 17/10/2012 14:20

Its 30 degrees (in new money) in Falibleedinraki right now!!!! Many, many thanks to Thomas & Yannis at Thomas Bar....I needed to know your great news....

bagpuss · 17/10/2012 18:18

Ds2 is home - machine is on again!

Shabs and trips, I hope your respective boys do well today. Ds1 (also a James!) is in the top sets for Maths and English and was quite upset to not be on the g&t register because his primary didn't have one! I hope he manages to do well at Maths because he really enjoys it.

Shabs, they may have the weather over there, but they also have no money and no healthcare, I know where I'd rather be!

shabbatheGreek · 17/10/2012 22:20

Dont believe everything you read in the papers or watch on the TV about Greece. Yes in mainland Greece things are very, very tough but Rhodes is a 14 hour ferry ride from Athens. The islands are not suffering as much as the mainland. The family who own the hotel we go to say that there only problem is that many of the 'returners' to the hotel who are British cannot afford to go there this year.

The hotel closes this weekend for the Winter. As the last person leaves the extended family (and there are 100's of them) all come to the hotel and they clean all the rooms, do any repairs and improvements. Then the entire family move around each others businesses and farms and help out there. That is the way of the Greek people we know. They all look after each other and help each other.

Takis' only part that was making him angry was their slow (if ever) return to the Drachma. He also says that the Greeks should never pay back Germany. I got a full history lesson from him!! The Germans stripped Greece of all their money, gold reserves and precious artifacts in the second World War. That part of our conversation had him the most angry!!

Rhodes has been financially 'battered' but their view on this is 'United we stand, divided we fall.' They will survive - I know they will.

OMG THAT WAS A VERY SERIOUS POST FOR ME!!! LOL

bubby64 · 17/10/2012 22:57

Thanks for all the good wishes, family didn't forget, just left it til later in the day as such an early start this morning.
Trips and Shabs, hope It went well today for Tom and James.
Bagpiss I am working my way through our washing pile, and Mike is in top set for math and English too, much to myJames disgust!
Shabs - well done to Lew, and i totally agree with Takis's view on Germany, even though I work for a German firm, I don't always agree with the way they do things.
