wyls · 22/09/2005 17:05

Thanks you. I cant believe it's only been 2 years that we have been married. We have been together for 13 years now though ...

Blossom2, it will get a lot better when dd is 3 months. I know!!!

Pam70, Ireland is a lovely place. We went to Co. Claire not long ago to visit friends and it's lovely there. In fact, we are planning to visit when ds is about 6 months.

I work in the west end in london so china town is not far from me and i used to go there for lunch/dinner. The Oriental city in Edgware is different to china town. It's got a couple of chinese restaurants, as well as a bug food hall. You can have chinese, thai, japenese, malay & etc food there and it's all very cheap. They also have a japenese supermarket there where they sell fresh seafood for sushi so all in all it's a day out. There is also a sega word for the kids. I am just so hungry now!!! :-)

yingers74 · 26/09/2005 11:20

w - how did saturday go? 13 years that is pretty brill, were did you guys meet?

blossom - how are things going?

blossom2 · 26/09/2005 14:39

hi yingers ... home stretch now!!! how are you feeling??

DD2 has got a cold, cough, runny & blocked nose but no temperature - doctor says just a mild cold, but at their age her coughs sound so bad.
She has gotten into a pattern of feeding & sleeping every 3 hrs and she beginning to get the idea of bath, feed & bed. Although she is still having the nap, then awake and back to sleep but we're got the awake time down to about 45 mins and she is no longer screaming, just calm and whinging - i'm so relieved. Although decided to wake twice in the night now, rather than twice which is exhausted but i've got some kind of evening back. And DH has been able to put her down too.

things looking well in the blossom household, even though exhausted!!

How is everyone else??

yingers74 · 26/09/2005 21:24

blossom - glad things are going better for you. Hope dd2 gets over cold soon.

I am good although my dd has now decided that she is going to try to delay going to bed by coming up with allsorts of reasons. She is driving me mad! Have had to just let her cry herself to sleep tonight after going in ever 10-15 mins since 8pm! She also had me up at 4am last night saying things like my foot hurts, I need to wee, I need a book, I want a big bed etc etc. Not sure what to do, am hoping it is just one of those hiccups that will pass!

blossom2 · 27/09/2005 08:30

yingers... it is just one of those hiccups that passes. DD1 did that for a couple of months whilst i was pregnant too ... its insane though!!

OP posts:
yingers74 · 27/09/2005 17:47

I hope so Blossom!

wyls · 28/09/2005 19:38

Hi everyone, I had a lovely time on Sat thanks. I ate too much of course but it was lovely to spend some time with my husband .. no rushing around and it was just a very relaxing day.

Btw, we met when we were at school

My ds has got a cold too. It's almost going now. I have been giving him this medinice and it's working brilliantly.

I have just changed his routine to a 4 hour E.A.S.Y. He slept from 7pm-6am (10pm dreamfeed) yesterday and waking up briefly at 4am. So hopefully i will get some proper sleep soon.

My mum has been telling me to use rice water to do his last bottle so that he's more full up and helps him sleeping through the night too. Have u girls heard anything like that from your mum?

Pam70 · 28/09/2005 20:23

There's a particular generation of women both in Malaysia where I grew up and in Ireland where I now live who keep peddling the "put some rice cereal in the baby's last bottle" myth and they tell you to do this when the baby is only a few months old.

I didn't and wouldn't as I think introducing anything like that before a baby is ready for solids just upsets its digestive system.

BTW where is this Oriental City place? We have a short weekend to London coming up at the end of February but will have the 2 kids with us. I think we will be in hotel just off Kensington High Street - is it fairly easy to get to from there or too much of a trek with kids in tow?

yingers74 · 28/09/2005 21:32

evening all!

yes have heard of that from my nan, never went along with it although I think my mum did feed us some rice water when we were about 3 months although not via a bottle. With dd, the govt advice was not to wean at all until 4 so my mum advised me not to listen to my nan although of course not tell her that!!!!

School? that is lovely! I met my dh at uni, hmmm about 8 years and a bit ago now!

And being stupid, what does E.A.S.Y stand for?

blossom2 · 28/09/2005 21:42

E.A.S.Y stands for Eat, Activity, Sleep, Your time. devised by the Baby Whispher, tracey hogg who recently dies of throat cancer. eg feed at 7am, activity, nap at 8.3am for 1.5 hrs (which is your time) and then starts again at 10am Her books are quite good and some useful tips.

Oh, a friend lent me the Gina Ford 'contented baby to contented child' and it contains a really useful tips/guidelines for coping with too and the kind of things that will help eg toddler gets big meal at lunch and dinner is something light and easy ... i've tried that for a week now and its been really good.

Oriental city - is that the restuarant in chinatown where its a little set back from the road, and there is a bridge & pond before you get to the restuarant ... very nice and good food, although last time i went was almost 2 years ago for Dim sum.

Anyone fancy a meet up next february then??

OP posts:
Pam70 · 29/09/2005 09:56

oh yes I would! Would this be meet up with kids and partners or just mothers?

I've been meaning to get that GF book - contented baby to confident child - will get it now seeing as you think it's good - any tips on inducing good behaviour in a 4 yr old?

wyls · 29/09/2005 11:14

HIya, The Orential City is in Edgware (the county), just outside london. there is a chinese/japaness supermarket and a massive food hall (all different type of asian food) on the ground floor. There are also shops and a sega world for the kids. A very good chinese restaurant on the second floor. There are always some shows or celebration going on. Last Sat was philippine day so there were dance, singing and special philippine food. It's quite good for a day out cos there is plently of parking, not like london. Also, there is a massive chinese supermarket (wing yip) further up the road so you can stock up all the goodies.
I can send you the address for both places if you are interested.

I am not sure about the rice water either, it's not so much for weaning it's more for cleaning the heat as they say in chinese. Not sure if you understand. My mum and aunt keep going on about it so ...

I love to meet up too ... we can go to china town, golden dragon or jade palace do good dim sum too i think.

Blossom that restaurant is called China City.

Pam70 · 29/09/2005 11:58

Oriental City sounds a bit too far out of London for me (for the weekend). Sounds fab though - wish we had something similar here in Belfast!

I get you re: cleaning the heat - I know my mum goes on about some foods being "heaty" and some foods "cooling you down" but I'm never quite sure what's forwhat except chocolate - that's definitely a "heaty" food!

Wonder where CSA is - she'd know since she did her own confinement cooking with herbs and all.

csa · 29/09/2005 12:51

hiya all, soory for the long long absence. have been nipping in and out of mn with not much time to do many posts. welcome wyls! i'm in cambridge (malaysian chinese - dh english). and i see we have come round to discussing food yet again. sigh ... i think it is just cruel for those of us who don't live in london and have easy access to chinatown
have been to the oriental city place. but it was years ago when i was living in london. fantastic place. only found it once and then never could remember where it was.

yes, have heard about the rice water thing too but never for a baby. used to have lots of barley water too, especially if you have chicken pox/measles as it is suppose to be cooling. would feel really uneasy giving it to a baby tho. my mum's newest thing is pearl powder. anyone heard of that? ds1 has been having regular nosebleeds and happened to mention it to my mum one day and the next thing i find in the post are little packets of pearl powder!

ds2 is now just over 5 months. wow - time does fly doesn't it? have another 1.5 months before i go back to work
blossom/yingers, am using the gf routine on ds2 too. it worked brilliantly with ds1 so guess i never thought of doing it differently. not sure where your dd1 is during the day but ds1 is at nursery so it makes things easier to get ds2 into a gf routine. evenings are more of a challenge tho especially having to get both into bed at 7. so now, ds1 (3yo) goes to bed at 7.30 instead.

pam, lol about what ds says. that is so cute. ds1 does say some funny things but alas, i don't remember much of it.

blossom, can't believe it is 3 months already. when is your due date yingers?

yingers74 · 29/09/2005 14:45

am 35 weeks tomorrow and due 4th nov but had dd at 38 weeks so am hoping for the same this time round!

and would love to meet up in feb!

yingers74 · 29/09/2005 14:47

pearl powder - yes although mainly as a cosmetic thing rather than for medicine. When I was in china, all face products were pearl based and I have to say it was good stuff!

Pam70 · 29/09/2005 15:07

What do you do with the pearl powder for nose bleeds? Dilute it and drink it or stick it up the nose?

Sorry never heard of pearl powder before!

CSA - enjoy the rest of your time off, I've just started work again (beginning of September) after a year off. I found myself really dreading the whole thing but the reality hasn't been too bad at all (yet!)

I'll go and find out which weekend I'm in London and see if we can organise a meet-up!

blossom2 · 29/09/2005 17:44

February meet up sounds great to me!! only one thought and thats chinese new year

csa - good to see you back!

anyone know whats happened to the other mums??

i've just booked mine & the girls eurostar tickets home - one way in first class .... i'm so tearfull

OP posts:
wyls · 29/09/2005 20:21

yinger i cant believe you are due soon. Hope everything is ok. i had preclampsia when i was pregnant with my ds. it was a nightmare and i am just so scared to have another one ... not yet anyway ...

As for the pearl powder, i dont know anything about it

Anyway, i am off to north wales tomorrow for 1 week on hol so will speak to you girls when i get back. it's our first hol in the uk but it should be fun. Any tips on travelling with a 4 month old?

Blossom, have you read both gf and tracy hogg's methods? What are the difference? And which one is best? I havent heard of gf before?

wyls · 29/09/2005 20:25

btw, blossom good luck with the move. When are u coming back? is it ireland that you are moving to?

Hi CSA - Is your baby your first? I used to live in cambridge when i was at uni. i love the place but i havent been back for a while now. (btw, i went to the poly there not THE CAMBRIDGE uni)

wyls · 29/09/2005 20:35

Sorry CSA, ignore my question ... i didnt read your post properly. dah ...

blossom2 · 29/09/2005 21:26

i'm actually coming back to london from paris after being here for a year! long, long story and i'm getting quite tearful about leaving - have made some lovely friends.

travelling with a 4 month old is good compared to the questions i get now from DD1 (3.5yrs)"are we there yet?" about a million times. Baby will probably sleep most of the time anyway. One thing that has helped us when we travelled with DD2 at 6 weeks was to plan the journey around her naps. i.e drive when they are due for a nap and stop when they should have a feed & activity. it worked really well.

GF is considered striciter than TH, and believes in controlled crying. i think GF has toned down alot of her ideas since the first edition of her book and having just read TH latest book, i thought she was quite heavy handed in the language she used. I don't think there is too much difference in their approachs, just 2 different types of routines.

Have a great time in wales Wyls, don't worry about travel times or when you're going to get there. i've had to breast feed on the hard shoulder on the motorway because DD2 was crying so much....

Good to hear that you're well CSA.

blossom2 · 29/09/2005 21:28

you can tell how tired i am ..!!

OP posts:
csa · 30/09/2005 09:45

pam, i think sticking it up your nose was what got kate moss into trouble
no, i'm suppose to dilute it in some water and let him drink it. going to try some tonight cos he had a nosebleed again last night.

wyls, have a good holiday.

when is chinese new year btw?

Pam70 · 30/09/2005 10:42

csa at visions of your DS with white powder down his nostrils - you would be up for Bad Mother of the Year award!!!

OK checked my dates - we are in London from Sat 18th Feb to Monday 20th Feb. Definitely want to take DS on London Eye, and also hunting around for other stuff a 4 year old might enjoy (with not too much walking or he will moan!)

Thought he might enjoy dinosaurs at the British Museum.

Blossom - it's always hard leaving somewhere you've had time to settle in but at least Paris is pretty close and you can always hop over on visits!
