We earn nearly 5K a month but we’re always skint

Me and my partner have been together 6 years and we have 6 kids between us. We both work and on paper we should be doing ok but honestly we seem to have no money left most months and I dont understand where its all going.

I earn about £1450 a month after tax and he usually brings home around £3200 but it depends on overtime. We get child benefit as well and I get a bit of maintenance for my older two but its not a massive amount. So I know we arent on a low income exactly, which is why its frustrating that we are always counting down to payday.

I have DS11 and DD8 from my previous relationship, he has two girls aged 13 and 10 from his previous relationship and we have a DS who is 2 and a DD who is 8 months. The older two live with me full time. His girls have only recently come to live with us full time because their mum moved away and they wanted to stay with their dad. Their mum isnt paying maintenance at the moment. I dont blame the girls for any of this and they are lovely, its just obviously a lot more expensive having two extra children here all the time.

We rent a 3 bed house and its quite full now but moving isnt an option at the moment. Rent is £850, council tax is about £180, then all the usual bills, phones, petrol, car insurance etc. He pays the rent and most of the bigger bills from his account and I tend to pay for the food shop, things the kids need and bits for the house. It sort of ended up that way rather than us sitting down and deciding it was fair.

The thing is he keeps saying I need to cut down on the food shop. Last night I spent £235 and he was genuinely shocked when he saw it, asking how on earth I had spent that much and saying I need to look at my spending. I know £235 sounds a lot but its for 8 people and I got nappies, washing stuff, toilet roll, packed lunch things, milk, fruit, meat etc. I wasnt buying loads of treats or anything particularly expensive. We were running low on quite a few things so it wasnt even just food.

I did get annoyed because he has been ordering more Airfix stuff recently. He builds the models and paints them and its his hobby, which I do understand, everyone needs something they enjoy. But he will order a kit for £35 then paints another time and tools and bits for another £20 or £30 and he doesnt seem to see it as much because its not all in one go. He says its his hobby and he doesnt go out drinking or spend money on nights out. Fair enough but I dont have money to just buy things for myself whenever I want. If I need clothes or something I usually leave it until the next month.

He says thats different because the food shop is something I can control and I need to plan better. He reckons I buy too much and we dont need half the things I get. I said if he wants to do the food shop and feed all of us for less then he can have a go because its easy to criticise when you arent the one trying to make meals out of whats left in the fridge. That probably didnt help the conversation.

He then said since his girls moved in everything costs more and I seem to have a problem with it. I honestly dont. They are his children and of course they should be able to live with their dad if thats what they want. But we didnt really sit down and work out how much more it would cost or change how we pay for things. We just carried on as before and now we are struggling even more.

He has debt repayments as well, credit cards and a loan from before, which come to around £500 a month. He says those are fixed payments and have to be paid so theres not much he can do about them. I agree they need paying but it means a lot of his wages are already spoken for before we have even bought food or put petrol in the car. His overtime isnt guaranteed either so some months he gets less than £3200.

I dont know if we are just spending too much or if this is what it costs to run a house with this many kids now. We dont have expensive holidays or go out much. The kids have clubs and school things to pay for, they grow out of clothes and shoes, the little ones need nappies and all that. Then theres always something else, a birthday or a school trip or something needs replacing.

We dont have a joint account and neither of us has a proper idea of what the other has left after bills. He thinks he pays most of the money out because the rent and bills come out of his account, and I feel like Im constantly spending mine on everyone and everything and never have anything left. We have never actually added everything up together which I know sounds stupid.

I dont want this to turn into me saying he shouldnt buy his hobby stuff or that his girls cost too much, because thats not what I mean. I just dont see how we can both be working and bringing that much in and still be skint all the time. Is £235 actually ridiculous for a weekly shop for this many people or do I need to look properly at what Im spending? And how do other people split everything when there are children from previous relationships as well?

@MoonlitMabel
Still can't figure out how you rent is so low for a 3-bed?

Because not everyone lives in a posh expensive area lol. Its a rented house, nothing fancy about it, just because a 3 bed costs loads where you live doesnt mean it does everywhere else. £850 is still a lot of money to us every month!

@ItsPickleRick I await her response...

It’s none of your business.

She asked for help with finances. Whether she rents privately or has social housing is irrelevant.

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 12:40

@MoonlitMabel Assuming it's a private rental, that's a really good price!

Mangelwurzelfortea · 16/10/2026 12:42

As others have said - it'll be the six kids! Everything is expensive now and feeding and clothing six children is just inevitably expensive. My income is roughly the same and I have two teens and I am still skint at the end of the month! (I am paying off debt for work done to the house though so will be OK once that is paid off).

Your husband's debt - when you say it's £500 a month, is that actually paying down the debt or just paying off interest? If he's just paying off the interest, then that needs addressing because it's not sustainable. Maybe speak to StepChange about how to actually pay it off.

Some areas are cheaper than others. Why is that so hard to grasp?

£850 would get you a 3 bed here too, and it is not council house area. Can get 1 even cheaper by moving further away, and taking on an even more painful work commute to the cities

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 12:43

@MoonlitMabel We bring in less than you a month and our rent is a lot more expensive.
But I appreciate choosing to have 6 kids is incredibly expensive.
Can you cancel any subscriptions or anything?

Laurmolonlabe · 16/10/2026 12:44

I don't see how he can justify paying his own debt repayments and buying for a hobby , but expecting you to cut down on the food shop- maybe he should cut down on his hobby because his debt is already costing £500 a month- he should spend zero until it is paid off.

Its just factual that 2 extra people moving in full time increases the price of the food shop though, it doesn’t mean the youngest is the favourite

Clearinguptheclutter · 16/10/2026 12:47

We have a similar income and manage fine- but with 2 kids

you both chose to have a 5th and 6th kid. Unless you earnt mega bucks that was always going to be tight. Not sure what you expected!

FunPartyIdeas · 16/10/2026 12:48

@Calliopespa I agree with you. It appears they were already struggling financially at this point, before deciding to have the youngest two? Children are expensive.

Overthebow · 16/10/2026 12:48

Your income isn’t high for 6 kids. We’d be skint too if we had that many kids and only £5k a month. Can you up your hours?

But if he is hopeless with budgeting the odds are he will overspend and they will have FOOD on the credit card as well.

Well quite. But at least he will learn that the OP is not overspending on the weekly shop, and stop complaining to her about it.

MoonlitMabel · 16/10/2026 11:31

Obviously I know kids are expensive lol I’m not thick. But we werent struggling like this before his girls moved in, and I’m not saying they shouldnt be here, they are his kids. It’s more that whenever I bring up money he just says it’s my spending and I need to cut back. Like the food shop is the problem but his own spending doesnt seem to count because its his hobby. I know we need to sit down and go through everything properly but it’s a bit unfair to act like it’s all me.

The two extra kids coming from their mother is obviously the problem here - he should be paying more towards the food shop or she pays maintenance.

BrokenWingsCantFly · 16/10/2026 12:49

It is you DH spending that he needs to be looking at, your spend sounds perfectly reasonable for a family of 8.

How is he still using the credit cards and taking on more dept when he sees how much you are all struggling? Bills for the house including rent would be around £2k on the generous side. Another £1k for food shopping. That leaves £2k for his dept, other spending for children and petrol for the car/cars, so the food shop shouldnt be where the problem is.

His hobby is having 6 kids. If he cant stick to budget and work on getting himself out of that dept at the same time, then he needs to get out of dept before getting back into his hobby. You need to look through your joint spending together to get to the bottom of it and free up that £500 before the kids get even more expensive as they age

As he's so wise perhaps he can take over the shopping. You'll pay it, but you both work full time so he has as much time as you.
Have you returned to work since the girls moved in? How much are nursery fees for the two kids? Are you paying it our of your money?

Yes but my point is more that there was a decision about having two more when the eldest were already in existence. I think once you have children, you need to budget on the basis you may end up having them live with you.

Also, the airfix needs to stop. Adults can't wander round producing children and building models they can't pay for.

Bjorkdidit · 16/10/2026 12:50

Can people stop sniping at the OP for having 6 DC? They are all here now so the OP and her DP need to work together to make the best of their situation.

pinkdelight · 16/10/2026 12:51

And yes the house is full, we know that, but the girls wanted to stay with their dad and we werent going to say no to them.

You say that as though his girls didn't exist before you decided to have two more. Madness to keep on having more kids in a 3 bed house, in debt and with limited earning power. 5k isn't much when there's 8 people to fund. The way you're bamboozled by how skint you are and the focus on his girls moving in as if that was some unforeseeable event/expense shows the short-sightedness of the decision-making here. Hope he's had the snip now at least.

Superhansrantowindsor · 16/10/2026 12:51

Six kids is mega expensive.
You need to write down EVERYTHING you are spending money on- right down to the bag of chocolate buttons you pick up from the corner shop on the way back from school. I spend around £100 a week for three adults so your weekly shop doesn’t sound excessive to me. It will be all the little stuff adding up - hair cuts, shoes, school trips, parties, soft play etc

topcat2014 · 16/10/2026 12:52

The hobby has to stop until you're on firm ground. 30 quid per person per week is bare minimum food shop. Can he not do basic maths. Had he ever done shopping or cooked from scratch! I'm guessing not. He has six kids. He doesn't really get to do much for himself until the kids grow up.

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 16/10/2026 12:52

I love the thought that not buying a pack of nappies that will be needed in the next week or two anyway somehow fixes the budget!?

Sounds like you need to combine finances and allocate a set amount 'allowance' for hobbies (same each).

Is there anything that can be done to pay off his debt more quickly/cheaply? Is he getting child benefit for his two daughters?

PoppyFleur · 16/10/2026 12:53

Your DP is picking on one transparent cost (the food shopping and ignoring the rest of the bills including the cost of interest on his debts. No wonder you feel attacked about the food shopping, however he is living in denial if he doesn't understand that food has gone up hugely in the last few years.

You both need to sit down and calmly work through your finances. That starts with identifying every single monthly outgoing; rent, utilities, subscriptions, debt repayment, food, fuel, car costs, school costs such as school uniform, trips, lunches etc. Also factor in costs around Christmas and birthday.

Then look at your income, maintenance, child benefit etc. Full transparency is what you both need to see what money comes in and flows out. The Money Saving Expert website has an excellent spreadsheet that helps identify all the costs. Then look at all your bills and see if you can switch providers and save yourself some money, Good luck.

It's the main reason they're skint. And this - it's done now so don't mention it - stance encapsulates the lack of responsible thinking that got them into this situation. The DH's two daughters were already here before she had the last two, but that didn't seem to be factored into budgeting or living arrangements.

Glowingup · 16/10/2026 12:54

I’m not surprised. Things are expensive. £5,000 isn’t a lot these days - it’s two pretty modest incomes and if you’ve also got debt repayments and six children I’m impressed that you’re managing. You’re lucky your rent is so low.
